My Newbie (Minor) Success Story
After a couple weeks of regular forum reading I felt comfortable doing SEO, Website design for small businesses, and some different forms of marketing. I wanted to get on the move and my first decision was to hire my sister to do the selling on a commission basis. She is in her early 20's and is trying to get through college so I figured I could throw her 20% if I generated the lead and 40% if she did all the foot work herself.
I got a couple small business to be part of my portfolio by offering them a free website and 6 months hosting if I could use their sites and business as references and I got a couple testimonials from them.
The sites are not ultra fancy because all these businesses need is a web presence and a way to be found on Google. They take me about 4 hours total of work. I also then offer SEO work to these portfolio clients.
Now this is opportunity I stumbled onto that I wanted to share with everyone else.
I made a decision to get an LLC created by a lawyer I have used for years because of a Worker's Comp case. I told him what I needed and what I was doing and he became very interested. We spoke for about half an hour and by the end of the meeting I had agreed to get his firm's website ranked on the first page of Google for only 1 search term. I did the SEO work in exchange for the creation of my LLC.
Now I had already looked at his site and thought that it would be very easy to rank the site. It was 3 years old and was just being out ranked for silly stuff because it was not even close to being optimized. I live in a town of about 7,000 people so needless to say it wasn't hard.
I ended up out sourcing the work to guy on Fiverr that did some quality back linking. I ended up ranking him on the first page for 4 different long tail keywords and to sweeten the pot I did his Google places listing. My plan is to always over deliver whenever there is an opportunity.
He was extremely excited and started to get a few more calls and traffic to the site. One of his partners heard about the work and got with me today and is excited about me optimizing the website and ranking them for more terms.
Newbies, you gotta understand something. Yes it is scary and yes new things make us feel uncomfortable.
BUT unless you take some action you are never going to stumble across any gems.
This is my first semi big job and because this firm is a big fish in a small pond their testimonial will go a very long way for me.
My Advice
First, you gotta get out of the mindset there is some magic system that will help you rocket to success. Hint: There will never be, so stop looking. That is why you have probably bought a ton of WSOs and are still on the side lines.
Just get out there and do it, because if you put the knowledge you have learned from this great forum you have a great chance to succeed, but the first thing you have to do is try.
Good luck, now get out there.
