New Customers via small group seminars

Was kicking around the idea of mailing a simple postcard to all the real estate, law and small business offices in my area. The pitch would be asking them to send a representative (Owner, operations person, marketing person, admin, etc) to a 4 hour seminar on how to better leverage direct marketing in-house (or any online / offline marketing concept that you personally excel at).

I have a deep background in print production, data and mailing and marketing - so the development of the learning materials wouldn't be so tough. I'd charge $99 or maybe even $199 for the session and provide lunch while we blended a mixture of DM philosophy, campaign development and mail strategies. We'd do some group activities and ultimately leave each attendee with a better grasp of how small businesses should market.

The seminar could teach those that had a ton of initiative how to launch their own campaigns, those that were a little more timid would walk away with a more confident approach to qualifying potential vendors to help with DM.

Or... And perhaps this is why I'm most interested in this angle - your attendees might be so impressed by your knowledge and solutions that they would simply hire you to do everything from there on out. Heck- if the number of new customers you won from an event like this warranted it, you could lower your price so more might attend?

Imagine running 2 of these events a month. What do you all think? New Biz Development Genius or a waste of time??!!!

    Kevin,

I think you would be competing w/the post office. They have a program called EDDM they are hawking like crazy. See the posts made by Bob Ross and others about this program or go to the usps.com site.

In any event, at least here in my town, the PO sends out their EDDM lady to local biz and teaches them, for free, how to do DM. I'm not saying you couldn't get people to attend, I'm saying you need a livelier hook for them to pay.

Maybe if the session was free but your materials were for sale you would do better. Years ago I used to do one night courses through the local community college's outreach department. I'd get half the fee plus whatever I sold my books for. I extended this program to a few local outlets that also presented seminars in their conference room. Sounds to me like you could do the same thing.

It is a great idea but one that needs some heavy marketing. A post card won't cut it IMHO.

    Just my 2¢...
