Google Places - All in One Thread

So I've been doing some research on Google Places and ranking. So far this is what I've got.

- List in a lot of directories
- Optimize website for google places keywords
- Optimize Google Places (reviews, pictures, keywords, etc.)
- Get citations (not sure what those are)

Here's a sweet list I found in another thread, hope it helps someone else.
Citation Sources for Local Search

Aside from those basics, what else is there that I need to know. Especially with all the changes lately, I don't want to leave anything out. Also what are citations?

Really I just need an all around knowledge on anything I have not specified here, and any tips I may have missed out on would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks.

Here is a screen shot I took for you explaining what a citation is: http://screensnapr.com/e/pp0SBc.jpg

Essentially, its the name of the business, address, phone # and website as is appears in the google places listing.

You want this "citation" to show up on many other sites (local directory sites for example) like superpages.com, yp.com, yelp.com, etc. More citations result in the business showing up higher in search engine results for google places.

Also consider adding GEO-Tagged images when adding images to the listing (i did not see that on your list). I use pictomio to geo tag images. It means that you add the location of where the picture was taken to the .jpg image itself. Ideally you want the geo tag in the area you are trying to rank for.

i would also add videos to the google places listing.

also, make sure you do some keyword research and add proper categories to the listing to get it ranked.

    good luck!

Grey, actually I'm the one who compiled this list of directories during the times I was working for OptiLocal. It is a little outdated right now (seems to haven't been updated for quite some time). I'll be posting an updated one on my new site soon.

Joe said it pretty much all regarding what citations are, so in your OP getting listed in many directories is the same as getting citations, to some extent. There are alternative ways of getting citations but these might be difficult.

Here are some good resources to learn more about the local ranking factors:

Local Ranking Factors Study by Bizible (and my critique on it)

    Hope that helps!
