Offline Business Builder Series: "Here's Why I Rarely Take On Website Design Clients..."

Hey Offliners,

The past two weeks I've had several business owners who have really tested my resolve to stick to my business principles.

On Monday, I had a another business owner come by my office, who 12 months ago had begged me to do a website for him.
He stopped by on Monday to ask me what he needed to do next because the website wasn't driving a massive amount of business to him.

Now, this is a business owner who begged me for weeks to build him a website. I resisted for so long because I knew in my heart of hearts that he didn't get it.

He didn't get the fact that a website is only as good as the marketing campaign driving qualified leads to the website and ultimately to his business to buy.

He didn't get the fact that a online marketing campaign is like marriage. You must keep working on it and putting good stuff in to get good stuff out of it.

He didn't get the fact that he'd either have to learn online marketing himself or invest the money to have a employee or consultant to manage his online marketing campaign for him.

But, last year after weeks of him hounding me, I finally caved after he told me a sob story about potentially going out of business.

The crazy part was that he was one of the first clients I signed up last year after I realized that the way I was going with the website design part of my business would either give me a ulcer by 35 or cause me to lose my mind.

When I was doing the five page brochure websites, things were golden, but as soon as I got into the big ticket websites for $5,000+, my blood pressure and stress level skyrocketed.

Sometimes, working with a business owner and doing custom website design work reminds me of when I used to hang out with one of my friends who tried to hook up with every hot chick in the bar.

My friend dated a verifiable beauty queen, but the second he saw another attractive woman, he would forget about the diamond he had at home and start chasing someone else.

Alot of the business owners I work with begin with a very simple idea of what they want to have on their website and I agree because it's proven to convert visitors into appointments or in-store visits.

However, by the time some business owner's get done looking at everyone else's website, they want the next Amazon.com.

Well, on Monday after I spent about a hour reviewing what it takes to drive traffic to this specific business owner's website and converting them into real buyers, it finally clicked for him.

He's finally ready to make the real work and investment that it takes to generate buyers from his website, but it took me standing by my principles in order to force him in that direction.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to get a consulting contract with him. Good luck.
