I'm 16, I own a forum - How to achieve success?

Hey there everyone, my name is kevin, and I'm 16 years old.
I'm the proud owner of this forum: hiphopside.com

I need tips, advice, strategies, etc on how to attract visitors and make them sign up on my forum.

I spent over $500 on this forum and I now need your help to make it a success.

Edit: I think I made a thread like this but in the wrong section, sorry about that.

Are you willing to invest any more money?

How do you plan on monetizing the site?

The keyword "hip hop forums" gets 22,200 searches per month, and "hip hop forum" gets 27,100 searches monthly these are global..."hip hop community" gets 5400.

I don't know anything about monetizing forums but my guess is to increase membership first then monetize?

So buy a couple guaranteed page one SEO campaigns for those keywords even if your on the bottom of the first page you'll still get 2% of the searches.

      http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...ior-forum.html

Cost you a total of $225 for 3 keywords on page one or if you want buy 5 keywords and the price is only $50 each, $250 for 5 keywords.

Those 3 keywords should get you at least 1k hits per month if your on the very very bottom of page one...you'll be higher than that and you can move them up with a link building package found cheap here.

And how many hits/new members are you signing up each month?

Sounds like you need to do more to make it an active forum so people will sign up and you will convert more visitors.

Also make guests less accessible to the forum.

You have to search the exact match not broad match of the keywords.

            [hip hop forum]

            720

            [hip hop forums]

            1,000

            [hip hop message board]

            91

            [rap forum]

            480

He's depending too much on google probably, which isn't the way to build a forum of that size at first.

            Spam the active forums.

                Just a thought....
How about trying to exploit YouTube with your contests.
If any video gets hot and goes viral, you'd probably get a flood of members.

i'd lean real heavy on personal video submissions.

I don't think Nameless had that sledgehammer back then.

                  Hey Kevin,

whom is the site geared towards? Fans or beatmakers?

If you focus on beatmakers than you could try advertising beatmaking software and tools for beatmaking from Amazon.com on your forum.

My friend is a beatmaker, they are passionate bunch but mostly broke, young students. They will find the money to spend on a mic or piano keyboard etc but it can take some time.

If site is geared towards fans, then advertise albums form Amazon.com or Beatport but in this case it will be bit harder to monetize.

And both types love clothes probably and care about the style so have some good clothes, sneakers, skateboards etc too.

Once you reach 10k visits a month then go after some direct ad sales and contact those companies that want to reach rap fans/rappers. Could be 50 bucks a month there for an ad.

    - ask your current members to spread the love by referring people, give them a refer link (check the User CP here)
    - limit the guest viewing to x threads per day, if they want to see more they must signup
    - have an active forum, if few people participate in your forum, people will see it has a dead forum and will not signup
    - you can pay people for posting in your forum so it looks more active, heck if you have time you can create several accounts and talk to "yourself"

If you don't have any money right now, you're going to have to approach things differently, obviously.

How do you plan on making money with the site?

If your site will be set up in a way that your members can benefit by bringing in referrals, you can set up an affiliate program so that your current members will have an incentive for bringing in new members. By having a paid-membership area, this can be used to easily monetize the site, while, at the same time, offer an incentive for your affiliate program.

This is just one option. But, it really depends on what your goals are, how you want to structure things and what your overall approach will be. Do you have any sort of plan or ideas?

I really don't, I want to host a rap contest and give away about $200 - $500, but I'm not sure how to set it up and advertise it so it can attract a lot of people.

Also, can you help me set up an affiliate program? Where my members can get paid for x amount of referrals?

LOL.. reminds me of when I was 14, I ran rhymekings, shiznit2g, rapbattles, hiphoptechnicz, hiphopheaven, spitboxers, mod at RM.

HHT and NHH were my most successful ones with over 15,000 members each. I sold them, didn't hold onto it long term. Those were the days when the competition was insane. Nowadays there isn't much competition, the niche just got saturated and consolidated. The biggest problem is like you said, monetizing.

Don't even TRY to monetize if you have under a couple thousand members.

Your main problem is you only have 400ish members. It's a baby board. You need to get people from the other forums and get them over. Encourage people to engage in the community.

I ran tournaments, contests, etc. to get the amount of members I had. I was so well known in that niche, that when I launched rhymekings when I was I guess 15-16.. I had 500 members SIGN UP within 24 hours.

rap/hiphop heads that are on forums, are picky about where they join. They're tired of investing time in new forums because they shut down so quickly. The average lifespan of a hiphop forum is 5 months.

Man... back then I didn't know too much, but invested a lot of time into it. I wish I had time to get back into it and build.

Active forums aren't for sale. The old ones are the ones that are for sale. I used to buy some of the older ones and get them active again to flip.

I would start from scratch, take your active members and the active members everywhere else lol.

I don't know of any, I have been out of the forum game for years now... about 10 years lol. I used to go in AIM chatrooms promoting my forums.. would PM members of other forums... would have site battles for more exposure. Had some members that would put up stickers and posters in schools, and other places where they were.

As far as contacting me.. just post whatever in this thread. I have a hard enough time keeping track of emails and other stuff LOL.

You ran those forums or you owned them? When I was back in high school, I used to be on RapBattles ALL of the time! Haha. I do a lot of hip-hop music on the side (started marketing online for the most part to fund my projects, but then developed a passion for that as well), so I would spend a lot of time getting feedback there when I first started recording. Small world man!

The first thing you need to do is develop a plan. This will involve decisions on your part as well as lots of research. Don't go jumping at the idea of setting up an affiliate program if you have no plan. What will you offer your affiliates? If new members aren't required to pay anything, how will you stop your current members (affiliates) from cheating the system and creating accounts themselves?

With vBulletin you have a referral system. You can run a contest with that, and filter out the contest period and see the IPs and host names of the people who sign up to see if there is any foul play. Of course, I'm not sure if you're talking about that or something else...

It was a lot of fun running those forums.. I wish I would have stayed in it.

    Okay, yeah, that makes sense.

I have a habit of not assuming too much about what other people already know. I have wasted lots of time while trying to help other people fix their computers over the phone - only to discover that they overlooked something simple that would have been a habitual check for me.

I will admit, though, forums are not my expertise...so, have at it, gentlemen.

Why am I not suprised nameless that you had all of those forums in your teen years?

To the OP - I know zero about what you are doing, but kudos to you for starting early, if you are reminding nameless of his self at your age, that is a good thing -

years from now you will be addicted to buying stock photography and snatching up hundreds of domains "because you are bored" -

Yeah.. the "netcee" market is big.. that is who you want. People who "rap" on the internet are always looking for message boards and forums. That's what you want to do, is target the people that think they're special but really aren't. lol.

No, it's just I don't know if I want to invest any time in it.

Small world man!
What was your name? RB we had I think around 20K members in the database but sold it before it died out. Same here... LOL, I released a few CD's. Stopped doing it about 4 years ago, sold almost 10K CDs out of the trunk of my car, ALMOST had a deal with Interscope, when the A&R Director was Amyn Bhai but it fell through disastrously. I've been thinking about getting back into it but that was pretty stressful.

I miss the shows.. live battles, and tournament days. It was a lot of fun.

Actually... ROFL.. I still HAVE my myspace with some music.

www.myspace.com/thisisnameless - Contagious and In Her Top 8 actually got regional airplay. Jonathan Doe and Please Don't never got anything except college radio.

I learned a lot... I basically gave up but looking back at it, I gave up when I was SO CLOSE of breaking through. Man, what a mistake.

I changed my name so many times when I was there. Haha. I think the last one that I used was Elemense. I'm in the process of building my offline business now so I can have some more time to work on the craft down the road. Since I work a 9 to 5 at the time being, building the business has taken over the music for now. Got a plan in place, anyway.

That's cool that you were doing it too though man! I had a lot of momentum rolling a few years back before my daughter was born. After that, life happened and here we are today. Haha. It's all good though. It's all about the journey in getting to where you want to be.

Here is one of my more "recent" tracks I did to show some appreciation for the troops, which is probably the most popular to date:
Anyway, sorry to get the thread off-topic. When I saw that you not only mentioned RapBattles forum but actually OWNED it, I had to jump in and say something. Those days on that forum back in high school were fun. I still remember a lot of the members from there, too!

        I didn't, but you did.

I was vague in that - I could have been talking about my self.. or just making a random prediction.

        You dimed your self out.

I have always seen this business model work. Setup an exclusive paid-membership area that has the most valuable information and tools only available to paid members

    forums take time to build.
instead of spending money I would rather focus on free marketing options.

    Hi Kevin,

Just wanted to add my 2 cents, if you are serious about making money off your forum, you'll need to treat it as a business. It's good that you've already invested on it initially, now you'll need to market it and grow your user base.

You need a clear objective for the forum, what is it mainly for? If you intend it as a hang out place <- not a very good idea. However, if you intend to use your forum as a platform to connect startup hiphopers and talent scouts, that could lead somewhere. I sometimes listen to hiphop but I'm no hiphop expert :-)

It would be nice to make money off the forum, but it has to become popular for that to happen, amirite?

And yes, it's for hiphopers, fans, talent scouts, etc.
But while the site's main niche is "music", it's pretty diverse at the same time, with sections such as Sports, Technology & Gaming.

So your 16? props to you brother, i wish i had the for site, or even the inclination
to do something when i was your age. If i remember properly, all i was thinking about
was girls, booze and trying not to piss my parents off.

I hope, that whatever it is your trying to do, happens, and happens early enough
for you to be one of those lucky few who actually get to enjoy the majority of their
    life.

I don't know ANYTHING about music, but i do know marketing, and sales,
if you ever need a hand, send me a PM. If i can help, i will.
