Make or Buy offline decision help

Help all offliners,

I am in the process of getting my plan together to try my hand at an offline model.

Lots of questions and tons of information out there and I need a little help narrowing this one area...I am sure I will have a plethora of other questions along the way but I need to make a call on this one so I know what I need to get/learn/or hire for.

I am looking at the mom and pop shop website model where I focus on selling simple low cost sites( thinking the $300 mark, but that is another thread discussion) and then charge a monthly maintenance/hosting/security fee(thinking the $70 range).

I am curious how most of you do your sites for your clients, do you build from scratch, utilize artisteer, do you have a suite of templates that you use and if so which ones, do you just outsource and if so, what are you paying for these sites.

I am thinking sites of 5 pages or so, nothing to in depth, again the service I am looking to provide is to get them on the net...I will be looking at building upsells into the business model later on...right now my focus is getting started.

Thank for all your thoughts, suggestions, ideas and criticisms.

    Adrian,

What you are talking about is a very common setup and many have made a lot of money doing so. Something that is becoming more popular nowadays is creating directory sites that can house 100+ businesses rather than having to create a separate website for each and every business.

One of the big advantages of a directory website is you end up building your own web real estate as opposed to someone else's. Once you have the site setup then adding new businesses is very easy but you still get to charge monthly fees for those listings.

There's too much to explain in one simple post so a good idea would be to learn from someone who is actually doing it. Here's a good WSO o get you started, if you are interested in this type of business model.

    Thanks WillR,

I have been tossing that idea around as well, have taken a look at his WSO and may take the plunge and add that to the list.

I have also been looking over your mobile site wso as a future client upsell as well.

I am thinking I may be more suited to offline as oppose to online. I can also see how, if you can get past the selling part, that if has the opportunity to provided a quicker return on efforts...efforts being the key word of course..

    Thanks again
    Adrian
