It's Google Plus Local now with Zagat Reviews. Google has transitioned over 80 million places pages thus far. Leo Laporte had a great discussion about it today on This Week in Google.

Yes google plus will replace google places, which is no biggie. Google maps is what gets me my business, when someone searches for "carpet cleaning Tampa" google maps still will show up in the results.
As for the people being forced to give reviews through google+, this is clearly a way for google to increase its registered users because now 80 million business owners will be asking thier customers to register in order to give a review. Google thinks once these customers register to give the review they will fall in love with google + and face book will soon fall to the way side.

I think that would have happened on it's own.

While Zuckerberg states that everyone is so into transparency now, there are times and places, especially these days, where transparency isn't very prudent.

Ya think the internet, where 100 billion can see your "transparency" might be one of those places?

As if customers didn't already have enough hoops to jump through to do a review on a business.

which will only increase negative reviews, because people who are pissed about a service won't mind jumping through those hoops to burn a business. The satisfied/happy customer won't have the time or motivation to leave a review through G+ local.

The strategy is as clear as can be.

How can we increase Google Plus use?

I know! We'll make it so that local businesses will SUFFER in the rankings if they don't jump on board and start using Plus for business. Now these business owners have to beg borrow and bribe their customers to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE create a Google Plus account to get reviews.

Sorry but having been a small business owner for 20+ years, which by the way was when most of the people at Google were snot nosed kids running around in diapers...

Anyways as I was saying, small business owners don't like being TRAPPED into using something and that's EXACTLY what Google is trying to do here to build their own business off the backs of others efforts.

The more I think about this the more it pisses me off.

I pissed me off too, as a small business owner. On the other hand, presumably your friends and family will be right there on your circle to leave positives. Basically, it makes the reviews kind of a joke, but I plan on cashing in on it if I can to help other small businesses.

You nailed it exactly! Google is betting everything on Google+ and will integrate everything with it. Soon you won't even be able to do a search of you are not logged in.

The Google+ Your World is the same. They closed Picnik and integrated it in G+, they push G+ notifications in Gmail, etc. They are, what I would call, a little pushy with their crappy service. It didn't catch because it doesn't bring VALUE. So, they force us to use it to get the other services.

Why do they want us to use Google +, btw? simply put, by having even more info on you, they will be able to laser target you for advertisements.

I want to kill Google+. Seriously.

It will. not. let. me. get. an. account. with. anything. other. than. my. birth. name. which. I. haven't. used. since. HIGH SCHOOL!

Very. Very. Very. VERY! frustrating, especially 'cause there is no one to talk to to fix it.

I just cross my fingers every day and hope that it dies off like MySpace... except faster.

I would be interested to see if they still pull reviews from third party sites... Thus, eliminating that need

    Also, I came across this.

You can be updated as changes occur... Because I am sure more are coming.

It was only a matter of time before G went from the most innovative company in the world to corporatacracy. Just sad to watch them keep doing this kind of thing to businesses - it takes a full time marketer to understand this - so in a way there will always be opportunities for us.

@Rus I understand your frustration - considering most of your business model here revolves around places.

@Wilco thanks for the video overview!

It's to promote google+ only. Now it requires much work to change the materials. They just changed the google places by google+. Probably the target is, if you want to do anything using google, you have to an account with google+!
