"LinkedIn Leak: Change your passwords Bad Day For LinkedIn: 6.5m Hashed Passwords Reportedly Leaked

Pretty much says it all. Good idea to change your passwords now. And pick something strong enough to avoid simple dictionary attacks, as usual."

    Hello All,

About 10 years ago I used to be an auditor of BS7799. It is a British Standard for Information Security Management Systems. When creating a password, please use a combination of the following:

Keep your password at least 12 characters long
Alphabets, lower and upper case, minimum 1 Upper case.
Include minimum 1 Number, more wont harm.
Include minimum 1 special character, more wont harm.
And reset your password every 45 days.
    Good example: AbcD1!2@3#4$
    I hope this helps.

    Thanks!

      Hello,

I think 12 characters is a lil too parannoying

      Today best practices are :

      1. 6 to 8 characters long
      2. A number
      3. A special character
      4. An upper case letter
      5. No dictionary words
      6. No easy to guess things (as @Dogname1)

I apologize if this looks ignorant, but what is the deal with hacking LinkedIn? What type of information would they be looking for that would be harmful to the users? I don't have much personal information on LinkedIn (as far as anything that could harm me) and I SURE don't have any kind of banking information there.

    Angela,

How are you doing? Maybe you have forgotten me, I was a subscriber to your monhtly backlinks long ago.

Linkedin provides GOOD and targeted B2B data, so the hackers can sell targeted B2B leads to get started with. Thatz the least they can do.

For people who have upgraded their accounts, their Credit Card info can be stolen, if Linkedin Database isnt encrypted, which I dont believe would be the case.

And then it depends on the creativity of a hacker, they can earn Millions from 1.5 Mill complete profile data of linkedin users.

But honestly, most of the times I think hackers hack just to prove their point to either themselves or to some friend. You know, like i bet you cant do that!!

I have a friend who has a similar destructive mind, to get things done from him, you need to throw a challenge in the negative way. Though he is genius.

    Thanks!

Good to see you again. You're right; I had forgotten that you can upgrade your LinkedIn account so yeah, that may be what they're looking for. It also makes sense that they might just be hacking what is a major website just to prove that they can do it. One way to get attention to themselves.

Isn't anyone surprised that LinkedIn never sent out an email explaining the hack to its members?...

Yes. After getting the news I changed the password in that time. Actually if the system is not developed enough against hacking, it is not matter to make a hard password that will be even tough for me to remember.

    Hello,

to change LinkedIn password is probably not good enough.
If you use same email address and password at other Web Services, than it MUST be changed as well. (ex.: PayPal).

There is another thing. Your LinkedIn profile can provide lots of information. Your work, school, university, networking groups, associations, etc.

Lets say your name is John Conor and you work at Harvard. so email must be john.conor@harvard.com. Now, is your password same for work and linkedIn??? probably, maybe or very possible...
