"$2,800 a Month with Refrigerator Magnets!"

Here's a simple, lucrative business I started a few years ago and am re-invigorating.

Waaay baack in 2007 I noticed at least 100 homes a month were being sold in my area. When I was in WalMart one day I noticed a folder holding 5, Sheet Sized, "FRIDGE MAGNETS"! I bought a package and went home to "experiment" in my "Idea Cave". (Similar to a "Man Cave" but more organized)

I noticed these Magnetic Sheets could be printed on an ordinary Inkjet. I thought, "Hey! Why don't I put a Calendar on these along with other info of HIGH INTEREST to....HOME BUYERS!

So....I did some more experimenting and "Idea Banging" and came up with my "WELCOME MAGNET!" (see photo)

This is an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet with;
1) Important Phone Numbers at top
2) A "12 month" Calendar (starting with month sent)
3) A "Category Index" of Businesses and Services with "Graphical Icons" representing each category

I then made a Stupendous "Welcome Envelope" to impress the Home Buyers and get them to OPEN!

Then...after an exhausting search for a "trustworthy" name source I find one with a "PLUS". The names were "30 days old and....ACCURATE!" WOW! This meant that each month my "Welcome Package" would arrive when home buyers NEEDED IT!

So....I made up a "Presentation" and proceeded to quickly get 28 sponsors to agree to pay me $100 a month!

In fact....for the 1st 3 mos (07, 08 & 09) I had TWO mailings going ($5,600 monthly)

The sponsors LOVED this - they could reach their BEST PROSPECTS soon after moving in (in fact, many had not yet moved in when my Welcome Package arrived)....

The Home Buyers LOVED this - they had Important Numbers, a Calendar and business and service people.......close at hand (ON their Fridge)

Each package cost me about $3 and I receive $28 Gross...for a Net Net of $25 per package.

I'm going to be re-igniting this because home sales are picking up in my area.

This is a "simple" program....I use MS Publisher for my graphics and a good InkJet to print the 100 Magnet Sheets each month. Pretty good income for 1 day a month. I have the "system" down pat and this time I'll be setting it up in other towns.

I'm not selling anything here so I won't be giving out many (if any) more details. However....this is a REALLY SIMPLE program to start up and I thought I'd toss it up here as something that's quite lucrative and MUCH-NEEDED in any community.

And....this is "face-to-face" program which means personal contact with sponsors.

Thanks for reading,

Don Alm....Entroopeneer

    Midaman,

    Great idea for everyone of all skill levels to do. I currently do this and have for about 2 years now. About the same prices as well. No shortage for advertisers wanting to get in touch with new AND current homeowners. This is one of those ideas that will make money for awhile.

    Hey. Great idea. How do you get the addresses for the new home buyers?
    I was thinking maybe partner up with the biggest real estate offices in the area.

      Datingworld,

      the sponsors could be any business. Plumbers, electricians, home remodeling, dentists, and such. There is no set type or niche.

      Michaelplies,

      I have a few partner real estate agents that i get some addresses from. I also don't rely on just future home sales. I pass out to already occupied homes as well. Everyone can use this list of businesses.

          EXCUSE ME! THIS has NOTHING TO DO WITH RE AGENTS OR AGENCIES!

          I simply;

          1) Make up a Sample
          2) Show it to ONE of each Business & Service Category (Accountant - Attorney - Auto Repair - Bank - Chiropractor - Dentist - Doctor - etc)
          2a) Telling them that I WILL BE MAILING my Magnets to 100 RECENT HOME BUYERS....EVERY MONTH! HERE IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE....HERE IS THE ENVELOPE IT GOES IN!....if YOU'd like to be the ONLY "X" on the Magnet the Fee is $!

          Again....THIS has NOTHING to do with RE Agents or Agencies! YOU....just;
          1) Make up a Sample Magnet
          and
          2) Go out and SHOW potential clients
          and
          3) Ask them if they'd like to participate for X$

            Those ads feels kind of tiny but if they get results, I guess it does not matter. Do they agree to pay $100 a month for the 12 months? Once the 12 months are up, have you made another magnet and if so, how many did renew their ad?

            Curious, Eva

    Nice, the only bit I don't get is how you get your list of leads to send the packages to (the recent home buyers)

    I love ideas like this. It is so important to keep traditional marketing when running an offline biz.. Its equally as easy to carried away with all the google PPC, SEO, Facebook hype...and forget this stuff. A lot more suggestive to your potential leads

    This is awesome!! You may be able to go to the county courthouse and get a listing of properties that were sold. I know they post the transactions in the paper too.

      This is a truly an actionable idea. I believe info free gives you all the new movers in any particular town.

      This is the kind of idea/plan that can ACTUALLY become a real business if you simply get up and do it.

      Thank for sharing

        seems like info free only has business leads, no? will they give residential addresses too? my concern was how to prove to businesses that you actually mailed it? certified/registered mail can get pretty expensive, plus who send advertisement with registered mail?!

        like everyone knows ValPak, so i guess businesses are not asking them to confirm whether pack was actually mailed or not - but for us being a new business, they probably won't trust right away...

          Info free has consumer leads as well. You can select new homeowners or new movers. It is quite convenient.

          I'm going to be implementing this soon, with a slight twist. Instead of a magnet I'm going to make a booklet/pamphlet. It will have one page with the emergent numbers, one page with a calendar, a brief "welcome page" with some info and history on the town I am targeting, and then each sponsor/advertiser will get their own full page. One picture, their phone number, address, hours, etc...and then I'm going to have them write a few paragraphs about their business.

          Each month I will send out the booklet to all the new homeowners and new movers in the area. Because we are targeting new prospects each month, this becomes easy residual income. Sell the advertisers on the idea once, put out a quality product that they will be proud to be a part of, and watch the money roll in month after month.

          Repeatable, residual, highly scalable.

    Also you said it costs you $3 per package and you charge $28 per? I thought you charged $100 per month.

    The good thing about this business is that "People don't succeed cause they aim too high and miss, no, they aim too low... and hit. Most people don't aim at all." (Les Brown)

    Not us... Not marketers. We live far above mediocrity. Always keep this in mind at all times..

    And also, what's the quickest way to find the sponsors? Mail? Email? Phone Call?
