Introductory letters vs USA-style headline letters

Do introductory letters work better or worse than USA Style headline letters?

I'm wanting to contact 3 specific companies (medium to high profile) and want to present a specific problem I have seen and present a solution; but what I'm not sure about is whether I should send them a gentle introductory letter first or go for the out-and-out sales letter with an AIDA headline?

I wonder if other users ever get the feeling that the USA style seems a bit pushy, or cheesy?

Has anyone used an introductory letter before, and did you find them beneficial; or would you only recommend the AIDA style USA headline style of copywriting letters?

And if so, why?

Thanks

If it's very important for you to close those 3 companies, I wouldn't send them anything.

I would just call. I know it's not a very popular idea around here but if you have 3 specific clients you need to close than that's gone be your best bet.

If you insist on hitting them with direct mail. Why not test on other similar companies first to see which one of the two styles get the best response?

    Hope that helps,
    Kristoffer

Thats a good idea. I've sent them a specific contact within each organisation brief introductory email first and I'm going to follow it up with a telephone call later on today.

I believe one of the companies I'm contacting has a guy going to a networking event I'm attending -- so it could be perfect timing!

I like the idea of split-testing with direct mail to see what gets a good/best response.
