This week I have been targeting service businesses here in the UK, I started off selling websites at £250 ($390). But I saw some posts where warriors were selling sites for a lot more, so I was thinking about raising my prices to something like this:

  • £499 with a year's free hosting.

Or

  • £349 + £30 a month hosting.

What do you guys think? Do you think these prices are fair? And do you think there's difference in the figures to suit different client's needs?

You want my honest opinion ?

Way too cheap. ( and i know i am going to catch flack for saying that )

But brotha, come on, your time, effort , expertise , they are worth more then that,

    aren't they ?

How much should you charge you ask ?

Easy, take a few minutes, ask yourself, "What is all my time, knowledge and expertise worth"
then go adjust your prices accordingly

I re-read your post and saw you said you are thinking of raising your prices. That means they are lower than the posted prices.

I will agree with kenmichaels. Too cheap. The only exception we make is when we know the client really can't afford a big bang. So, we set the initial price low but raise the monthly recurring fee. That has worked for us.

Will it work for you? I don't know your market but a top of the head guess says yep, in a heartbeat.

      Good luck,

      Tom

I think your pricing depends on what you offer. A Website that will take one to two hours to make and no revisions? Yeah your prices would be fine.

Set your prices based on how much you are worth an hour.

In the US major companies that offer such services bill with an hourly rate of $100 to $150 in my experience.

I'd honestly have a basic package say for $299 or $499 or something like that. You know you can sell that to anyone but upsell them a website based on their real needs. If they need a $10,000 website be ready to sell it. If they need the $299 basic sell that. But make sure your basic website only takes an hour or two. You want it cheap but also to be profitable for you.

Sorry for using US numbers just convert into amounts that work in your nation. Likely can use the same honestly based on the numbers you gave above.

    As for hosting charge monthly
Have an advertised Maintence package that includes hosting, backup and etc for say $30 or $50/mo
Have one or more upgrade plans for people who need more changes.
Also have custom plans based on the client needs.

And finally have a $10/mo hosting only plan. Don't advertise this but have it for those that don't want the maintence. But make sure you make them feel the pain when they downgrade. By having the lower choice you will 99% of the time get at least it and I would say that 60% to 90% will choose the better maintence plans vs just hosting if you sell it right. The cheaper choice merely allows them an out to a lower price if they need it. Just remember you don't advertise it because seldom do you find a client where it makes sense. The majority of clients you work with choose maintence and backup for the peace of mind it provides them. etc etc.
