Follow Up After Direct Mail

Hi Guys,
I have been using direct mail a fair bit lately. And i know i should be following up with phone calls. But like most people i lack a touch of confidence lol.

Anyone got any good ideas for an opening for a follow up call?

Something simple but brings up a pressing issue. I have developed my mail pieces outlining the size of the market and the opportunities they have once they get into the online game. I have also compared businesses to their direct competitors. Showing their competitors above them and out performing them.

For the script i would like come across casual because hard-lined direct sales calls irritate me and they are something i dont want to either.

I was thinking something along the lines of:

Hi my name is John and i am from ******** online consultancy firm. We sent you some correspondence in the mail a couple of days ago outlining how your website is being out performed by your competitors. We are following up to see if you would like to switch the tables and out perform your competitors?

I have come up with the above as i am writing this. I am wondering if something above is a little to long. When you saying something out a loud it seems to go on forever.

      Feel free to add some constructive criticism not just flat out negative comments.

      The mail is decent. it has generated just under 70k new business so far this year. and it only cost me around the 2k mark. Not a bad return. I would like to move it to the next level with call backs. But this is not my field of expertise. That is why i am asking for advice.

    Your mail is targeted, right? What is the open rate and is there any feedback? If your mail was not designed properly and people feel those as spam, your phone call will not bring any good result for you.

    I wouldnt open with just "Hi my name is" because that is immediately related to telemarketers. Most people will likely hang up on you right there.
    Try different methods and see what fits YOUR personality the best.

      I second that. Work on your script.
      Add a few adjustments to differentiate yourself from the average telemarketer and salesman.

      Small talk? So not only are you going to interrupt them from other
      important work, you want to veer the discussion onto irrelevant issues?
      Your client will only view this as condescending. And an insult
      on their intelligence. They know you don't care. So if there's going to be
      any small talk, at least keep it business related.

    I'll recommend 2 good courses that should make you a pro on the phone in no time at all.

    2. Unlock The Game (Ari Galper)

    Both of those are superb, I personally like Straight-line persuasion, it does cost around
    2k but if your already bringing in 70k this year then it's a good investment and will increase your ROI dramatically.
