I call myself an SEO expert but you can call yourself anything you want like the jargon free seo man or the 100% guarantee seo man or whatever you want...just make it unconventional

I call myself content manager. Simple to understand and easy to start a conversation. You should give a title that intrigue and allows you to start a conversation.

      I have my own business.

Pay attention to how business owners speak.

The guy who owns a barber shop will usually say "I have my own business".

The guy who owns a clothing store will usually say "I have my own business."

The guy who has several different kinds of businesses will usually say "I have my own business."

You want to be seen as their peer...someone who understands what it's like being in business.

So the best answer is often "I have my own business."

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Out of the many tried, this is definitely the best one.

It gets the conversation going without the other person feeling intimidated. So instead of them thinking.. What the hack does that even mean? They ask the most logical question (without feeling stupid) Oh yeah! What kind of a business?

          Tim,

I always and I mean always say, "I own...". Now they know they are talking to the owner or top dog or big enchilada or whoever. They also can relate because they too "own" their business.

Nobody cares about all that consultant and advisor crap. At least I haven't had one prospect or client tell me to have one of my "consultants" call them cuz they only speak to consultants and not biz owners.

That's my take and I'm sticking to it...

"I do website stuff". I don't like titles. Besides when someone tells me they are any kind of "consultant" I hide my wallet.

I used to fear this response, so for years used different language.

But then I realised, it's a good thing! Those who don't like this language are self-selecting as not being my target market. So I'm quite happy to call myself a consultant.

Think of what you want your audience to perceive you as. If you want to be seen as the head of a credible company that you own, use Owner, President & CEO, CEO, etc. My experience I've swapped several titles until one felt right. IMO simply using "Online Marketer" limits you to just that. Business Consultant is a bit too broad, unless you're really brought in to consult people on the operation of their business. Perhaps something like Senior Marketing Consultant for Company X would be fine. I was Senior Account Manager before realizing that what I really do in my startup company is all things "Business development" so that's exactly what my title became: Business Development

    Hope this helps

It depends on who I'm talking to. These are the three I typically use:
    1. Marketing Consultant
    2. Lead Generation Specialist
    3. Director of Possibilities

It's fun to be self employed and give myself a new title every week - haha!

"Marketing Consultant" is my choice ,I think it has some aristocracy .

    For a post:
every one have the right to say about his own business, but jobs, profit, conversation ,communication tell everything about his business.

So don't get afraid of your "own business".
