LOL, I got butterflies closing the deal. I got a really good deal, but so did he... he's going to make more than $50,000 from what I'm going to be doing for him.. so it's a good deal.

I got lucky... but it was self created luck, know what I mean? The amount of possibilities this brings, is amazing man. Think about all the people that want REALLY HIGH END services, but they don't want to pay cold hard cash, and would rather trade some of their high end stuff to get it?? Just asking, goes a long way man... this really has me motivated... I have NO idea what I'm going to do with the boat but if I could get a boat, I could get a house, cars, jet skis, choppers! ENDLESS possibilities!

I think you should try to barter the boat for something that is even more valuable. You were motivated by the show barter kings, up the ante and try to trade for something you really want or with more value. It would make a great story.

Well, I think you missed a portion of the thread. He is not getting 5K worth of services, it is much more than that. Originally $5,000 was too much for him to do in cash... I understand that, cash flow is a big issue for all small businesses. The MAIN thing here is that he had something of value... which was waaay more in value than what I originally offered. Our trade was originally going to be for an older corvette. Probably could have sold for around 12k...

I beefed up the offer, included more than what we originally would have done. So it isn't really like me getting all that for only 5K worth of services. I guess I should have conveyed that a bit better, but thought people would have read it. It was a big deal, but it truly benefits us both!

As for what I'm going to do with it... I have no idea. I don't want to dump a bunch of money in this thing, and would rather sell it before I do something stupid lol. I don't know about trading up some more or not, I think that would be more difficult and time consuming than I'd like. To be honest, just trying to figure out what to do with it, has been a time consuming major headache already lol.

It was called visualization in the 80's. People actually put pictures of what they wanted on their refrigerators so it was the first thing they saw when they went to the kitchen. I knew a fellow in San Diego who carried a visualization card in his wallet and looked at it everyday.

He had 10 items on it. As he achieved each one, he crossed it off his list.

Nathan may not have one of them today but his new boat may inspire him to create one.

OK OK...you HAVE to admit, I think this was a little insane!

I mean...at what point do we honestly admit that we have gone too far with the whole "buy low, sell high"? Is there a limit?

This kind of flipped me a little upside down, but who's to say what's right or wrong I guess?

Yeah that is a little insane... BUT... I beefed up the deal, it's more than 5K worth of services... it would probably end up being about 30K worth of services, but the point was the initial project was only going to be 5K and he didn't want to do that. Still a great deal for me, but it's a deal he's definitely going to benefit from as well.

He took something he didn't need anymore, in a tough economic state that would probably have a poor market for buyers and turned it into something that is going to benefit his business for years, and help him make more money instead of just sitting there and costing him money. It's not just me that got a good deal, and I truly believe that.

This deal was great for both parties involved.

I tried doing all that before and I felt like it was pointless... material things don't really drive me. I'm driven by money of course, but I'm driven by something more than just money. Not sure what it is or how to explain it. I just think looking at a bunch of pictures and lusting over what I one day want is a little too much.

I just explained the thought theology behind the man's statement. And, you don't one day want whatever your lusting over. You want it now but can't afford it so you make it a goal. Visualization is/was one way to achieve a goal. Nothing more nothing less.

You probably want succes, however you define it, right? You probably don't have any pictures of success hanging on your walls but you have the pictures hanging on your brain. It can't be otherwise.

Your successful because you see yourself as successful. Now if that ain't a picture I don't know what is. BTW, none of this is a value judgment or a right or wrong thing. It is what it is. Your boat is living proof.

I was thinking I could get some old piece of equipment I could sell for 5-10k.... but no... He had an old corvette, that probably could have sold for about 12k...that was his first offer, and he told me he has 2 boats, and his dad just gave him a 100K boat, and has one sitting there but the value is around 50k. I told him, well, let's beef up your website, and set you up with hosting, maintenance, brand identity service, and some monthly marketing with SEO for a year, and call it even.

Now... I'm the proud owner of......

Now, I don't have any room for this... I have to store this at my parents house, and they don't even have room for this. I don't know whether to sell it or not, but my step dad took this out on a lake today and said it runs perfectly. Has a fridge inside, 33 ft in length, 11 feet wide..

Point of the story... a little bragging... but mostly to show you all to ALWAYS be thinking... some things can be better than just a cash deal! 5K proposal, initially gave me $0, and turned into $50,000 or a new boat for me lol.

Edit: Another moral of the story.... once you have someone interested, NEVER let them out of your funnel. Keep contacting until they say piss off... and then follow up again in 6 months!

I too have entered into the world of bartering. I'm working on my next job - a day spa where I will be trading website services for massages!

Whenever I hear the same words you did, "I can't afford it," I spent a little time with the potential client explaining how they can't afford it. And then if it is a potential customer who might have something interesting to barter, we head down that road. It's a great concept and I think a win-win for both the IM and the client.

Nice job, man! But you know that every time you have to fill that sucker up, it's gonna be $400 or $500! And that doesn't even factor in the cost of maintenance, which is normally sky high for a boat like that.

Fun hobby, but very expensive!

Personally, I would sell that sucker in a heartbeat, and buy a new car with the proceeds.

But yeah... great job on closing that deal... you absolutely killed it!

If I had to do it all over again, I'd also take the corvette... and keep it. The boat stressed me out... I put off some work because of trying to figure out what to do with it, and I'm not exactly in a prime boating area. I traveled 3 hours away over a weekend to try and sell the thing and do some networking.. ended up getting a buyer, but it was well under what I wanted.

I'd like a boat like that again some day when I actually have time and money to invest in it to make it worthwhile. Right now I simply can't.

So, excavation business? How many customers do you need to find to give your client value anywhere near the cost of that boat? He's going to have to dig a lot of holes to get his money back.

That's just one part of the business, they do a lot of things though that are higher ticket so I don't think it would require that many.. They also have a remodeling part of the business, which I just gave them a lead on and it resulted into a $18,000 deal. I also have a big network of clients, and for the excavating side of the business, I'm going to hook him up with another client that does a lot of pipe stuff. Just those two things are going to equal out the value. I think so at least. LOL.
