Pat, Hi I'm new to the forum but not to web design. It just all depend on what you want. I have a list of questions that I ask my clients that helps me to decide on how much to charge a client. Right now I'm building my profile so I'm not charging as much as I would. If you would like to look at some of my work you message me and I will send you my website link. The forum will not allow me to post it right now. :-)

Also id you need website hosting I'm offering a special for my first 30 clients for only $30.00 for 1 full year. If your interested you can contact me through my contact form on my website or through here.

    Good Luck with your search

    Mary

My average 5 page simple wordpress site goes for $600+$360 hosting/support for 1 year.

I plan to increase the cost over time, but for now this is working.

Thanks! Do most designers include the hosting? I hadn't considered that . . .

Yes you need to sell the hosting. I give the hosting for only $10 per month, but two years into your business you can use that money for marketing expense. 3 websites per week times 50 weeks is $1500 per month.

Hosting: We insist on hosting our own sites. How else can you control the environment? In the rare instances where folks insist on hosting elsewhere, they usually end up being hosted with us once they realize many of the shortcomings of their host of choice. $15-$250/month, though I've seen organizations get ravaged for two servers at $3,500/month.

Web Design: We start with a questionnaire that asks many questions, including look/feel, tone, audience, competitor sites, page taxonomy, budget and timeline. Always ask what their budget is for the project. Always, always, always. Typical sites run between $1,000-$15,000. WordPress and Joomla are favorites, heavier now on the WordPress as it continues to mature as a "grown up" content management system.

          Hope this helps!

Thanks to all who responded! For those charging $50 - $100, I'm assuming that these are not WordPress sites???

Matt, thanks for the great info. I hadn't planned on asking for a budget because I'm targeting small business owners who'll probably have no idea about website costs. Thoughts?

            P.S. Your website is great!

For those who charge for hosting, do you use a basic shared hosting account, or do you have dedicated servers?

Not sure if your questions were directed to me. I should explain that my target market won't be internet marketers, unfortunately. I'm sure you'll find lots of help in the Warriors for Hire section, though.

Figure out what your prospect expects to earn from it and charge a percentage. Anywhere from 3% - 25% depending on how you value yourself...and I'm sure some Warrior will pop out saying you should charge even more.

I charge between 100 to upwards of 1500. For smaller sites (100-500) I require that they host with me for the lifetime of their site, anything over 500 they can host with me or take it somewhere else. I usually throw in a few free months in there so it's all set up on my hosting making it unlikely for them to switch anyways. I charge around 20 dollars per month, updates/ maintenance extra of course.

I start with $1000 for a 5 page site including custom logo, slideshow, graphics, pictures, etc. A nice site.

If they want it cheaper, I just take those things away until it's more "basic".

EDIT- I've only had one design client but I think my initial price is going to be $1500 now.

I created a wordpress design using headway with 5 pages (very nice by the way, with custom php and all) and I'm selling it at $389 but i'm saying that it's the special of the month and next month it'll go up to $500. Also this is acting like a template so i can sell the same design to more than one person (of course, the images and background color will change, making it more 'unique').

If the customer wants a custom design then its a lot more, specially if they want a shopping cart or something fancy. $2000+

Get around your place for a while and make your pricing base on other guy in your city.

Start small and growing up accordingly. when you get feel and confident, charge for higher.

      just my 2 cents

      thank you

It all comes down to the budget of your client.

If someone wants to give me £3000 for a webpage design I'm going to take it, and if someone wants to give me only £500 I'm still going to take it. Because I know that I can always come back and upsell some SEO, some PPC or whatever.

Try and find the budget your client has to work with. Do so by selling based on the VALUE your design package will bring to his company.. Then you let him know that you have no problem negotiating your price. This gives you room throw out a ridiculously high number.. eg. £4000.. If they can't afford it they will negotiate downwards. But if they can afford it, you will have just made yourself a sale.
