I have a client that already owns the domain name(but no site) which was purchased from godaddy. He also has an email address set up through godaddy(a domain email i assume)

I am going to be building him a website using hostgator as the hosting provider. Can i still use the godaddy email address or do i have to set up a new one through hostgator?

Cheers

  • Yes it is possible because it is different hosting.
  • I would guess that once you setup hosting (DO NOT Use Godaddy Hosting!) and change the nameservers for the domain, the Godaddy email address will be invalid.

Namecheap allows for something similar with their domain names as long as you have their DNS pointed to Namecheap servers... but as soon as you change it, you lose some functionality... well not lose, but it becomes the responsibility of the actual host server.
  • You can use either, i would just create same email (if it allows) or very similar alternative email address in hostgator to keep things simple but to be honest have never had the situation before.
  • Yes you can use the email as it is provided by godaddy. You are just transferring the hosting not the mail list, so it will works fine

    • So when i change the dns to point the domain to hostgator, the email on godaddy will stop working?? That would be disastrous as this is his working business email for the last 5 years.

      What a pain
