Has anyone ever tried offering this to businesses as a foot in the door? For how cheap broadband is I am thinking this could work.... When I say free wi-fi I mean a setup which would be used by the company for their customers?

In the UK very few businesses offer free wi-fi to customers, which.... ok on its own doesn't sell extra things, but is a real nice to have if its while you wait type service.

Once you are in with the business, it would allow you to sell your other offline services.

I need to get my thinking cap on!

Well almost every business has internet connections now and many of them use a router to connect more then one computer to the network. I don't think offering wi-fi as a free product is good positioning at all because in many cases the routers available today have wifi build in so they are already paying for it in a sense.

I have to agree with Russ. BUT............don't drop the idea just yet.

What if you offered FREE network administration. Some people just don't know how to offer it or how to set it up....or what to do when it goes down.

By offering free network administration to "maintain" and promote the free wi-fi service it does get you in the door without selling something. Obviously, you should be skilled and knowledgeable if you do want to offer this as a calling card.

What ever you offer as a way to "get your foot in the door", you don't need to ask about it here in the Warrior forum. Instead just try it. Who gives a hoot what we think here? And even if someone DID say it was a good or bad idea what would you do with that information anyway? It may or may not work for you.

Offering free wi-fi to customers allows you to list the business in free wi-fi directories. These directories are well crawled and provide an excellent source of citations for local businesses. This reason alone is worthy to get free wi-fi.

Sorry for the slow reply guys....

My thinking here is offering to them as service they can use for their own customers in their shop/business. I know myself I would want that separation between my own internet and what my customers would be using. This would be very much foot in the door strategy, the uk is miles behind with free wi-fi in businesses.

Something to think about! I need to see what I would be looking as basically a reseller of broadband.

Well a lot of shops and business out there already have and internet connection and can provide wi-fi to their customers. All they need is a router which i think can be easily provided or bought. And getting an internet service is very eaiy so i don't think this plan of yours will work. Just a thought.

of course they have their own internet, that's not the point. Its giving them wi-fi set-up to use for their customers hassle free. This wouldn't be trying to get 'businesses online'
