Salute to John Durham & Iamnameless

I just want to say thank you to John Durham & Iamnameless for inspiring me to pick up the phone and make cold calls. Yesterday I cracked open the Yellow Pages and made 117 calls to fashion businesses. It wasn't until the 97th call that a guy was interested and told me to call him back today.

Today I called him back but he was really busy but he said he wants me to come in and meet him on Monday. He said to call him back then and set up a specific time. Besides this follow up call, I called 147 other businesses and on the 95th call, another business owner said, "Yes I am interested." He checked out my website while asking me questions over the phone and he said he also wants me to meet up with him on Monday so call him back then.

I'm praying that I can close those sales and get 2 checks right away.

Last week was actually my first attempt at cold calling and I only made about 50 calls over the course of 2 days and gave up. But deep down I knew 50 calls wasn't going to put a dent in anything, so this week I knew I had to come back stronger. And I still feel like it's not enough. I want to start earlier in the day and call like 500 businesses LOL.

My initial plan was to approach businesses by email but that hasn't really gotten me anywhere so far. I spent the whole month of June sending out emails with only 1 response and she didn't even end up hiring me. I don't have time for that. My back is up against the wall because my bills are due -- like right now.

IMO, it's better to cold call. Because you'll know right away if they're interested or not. You can get a yes or no right away instead of waiting on their email response... that is, if they even bother to respond. Most of the people I called (about 95%) are nice and polite. They'll just say no thank you....no thanks sweetie....no that's ok....or something like that. I only had about 3 rude people hang up on me. But I just brushed it off and kept "dialing for dollars".

Thank you both for helping me overcome my fears. This is coming from an extremely shy and introverted girl from the hood who just wants to start a prosperous fashion business. I have a spiral notebook of business notes with plenty of tips from your posts on here. You've been a tremendous help to me as far as breaking out my shell and getting out of my comfort zone.

Cold calling works.

I've made thousands of calls by now, and only gotten 2 rude responses. In fact, I've had at least ten occasions where business owners have told me hey, great job on getting yourself out there and calling, keep it up! Most businesses people are very nice, and if you treat them like people instead of opponents, you'll do just fine.

    Good luck on Monday!

I agree with this, I have not made nearly that many calls yet... but I am getting appointments and interest... and even the people who are not interested are super nice and stuff... I've only had 2 people who were sort of rude...

One was rude because he couldn't see how his broken website was costing him business, and complained to me that all he cared about was ticket sales... (Ironically, the thing on his website that was broken is what allows you to buy tickets but somehow he couldn't connect the importance.)

The other was rude because she was slammed and short staffed.

I've had a lot worse things happen to me throughout the day than people being short on a cold call... it's not a big deal especially if you get paid!

My only issue is I tend to still sometimes get annoyed when they tell me no. Not because I am desperate for money... but because I can't imagine how they can't see what I'm offering them would at least be learning about in relation to their biz... but there's always at least 1 who gets it.

Dude, that is no issue! I believe that is a good "issue" to have. You feel so confident and are so passionate about what you have to offer that you truly feel that they are missing out!

Man... that is GREAT.. that is what it's about! When you lose that passion or you stop believing that, then you start slumping and sales are harder. When you REALLY believe in what you're offering and you start viewing the "No's" and "Not interested's" as them missing out, then you're going to be on a roll!

SheCopyWrites, like John said, don't thank anyone until you have some money from the deals. Nothing is for sure until you have money in hand! Everything works... if you work it. Cold calling, direct mailing, email marketing, seo, ppc...etc. Every marketing technique that is used, WORKS... as long as you work it, and work it long enough.

        Good luck!

This. I made this mistake early on of not taking on work because I thought I had several "sure things" lined up to work on. Needless to say, I did not.

Let me just quote a rap song here:
          =======================
          when them bottles stop poppin'
          and them dollars start stopping
do what you did to get it and don't stop

Rappers are not philosophers. Make more sales presentations and ask for more orders.
