How Do You Dress To A Prospect Meeting?

This is a funny one because were I work I see all sorts of people trying to sell stuff to my boss and our partner companies in the next offices, I sit right by the board room where they hold all of the meetings.

The dudes that walk in there are from marketing companies, tv & radio sales types, even SEO douches that have no idea what they are doing.

I seen the full suite types, i've seen the casual polo shirt and jeans types and I seen the nancy-boy trendy city posers who roll up with their posse of fairies.

Just thought it might be a good discussion on the forum.

Personally Im not a fan of suites, not that I dont like the way they look or anything, in fact I quite like them. But just that there is so much involved in putting it all together and then my neck is kind of big so I dont like wearing ties as my fat head gets even fatter and red in color as the blood slowly gets squeezed out of my brain.

Plus I think if you are seeing a local business dude like a mechanic or coffee shop owner, the last thing they want to see is some tool in a suit tell them what to do with their business.

I prefer to go for cool black jeans, nice shoes, pastel colored bad-ass shirt and if it's cold a cool jacket or if its warm just roll up in the shirt.

Laptop is a must hehe

How bout you guys/gals?

I wear a polo shirt that is branded with my company and name. This is comfortable, and makes it easy to duplicate for my reps.

I can't stand ties, and suites, but If I'm going to nail a real big account, I will act the part. Focus on what you love best, offering value, and your customers won't care what you wear... The one's who do wouldn't be a customer anyway.

Hmm, I wouldn't go too far with this advice. I don't know any big client who'd trust someone in flip-flops and basketball shorts.

Business casual is always safe for an in-person meeting. How you present yourself is an expression of how you feel about your business, and how much respect you're affording the client. Leave the crazy, lazy outfits for when you're actually getting the work done.

The bottom line: If you expect someone to write you a big check, you'll at least need to be neat.

I don't think there is a problem with the polo shirt idea but after a few weeks trying to sell your product or service you should get an idea from how the company owners that you visit dress.
