Directory Site inspiration needed

Hi all,

I have been reading up on this forum for a few months now and really appreciate the advice given.

The hardest thing is to concentrate on one idea and one idea only! I decided on one idea and soon realised that to make the most of this i need to add more value and create a brand.

So I decided to build a directory site to complement this idea, only now have i realised the amount of work I have brought upon myself. To get to a point where I will be ready to launch I will need at least 9000 pages, I'm up to 1000 now, but it is taking time (especially with a day job). I know when it is finished it will be a real resource and can make some money.

But...

How do you keep going when no-one understands what you are doing!? I try to explain, but it feels like everyone just agrees to keep me quiet and expects me to fail!

Need some inspiration please!!!!!!!!

First of all, no one told you you needed 3000 pages? You dont.

If you are worried that your site isnt big enough to sell off of yet, then dont.

Most people who buy a listing from ATT or Bowers, never even look at it. maybe ten percent ever even pull up the domain name of the directory site.

Even myself, I have web pages out there I have never even seen.

Fact is that people buy off your pitch and very few of them actually care to even visit their listings.

So if you are in the building process, its fine, go ahead and sell while you build and get paid for building.

Offer more services, even temporarily, like a full web design package, to supplement your income while you build the residual.

Im going to shortly start selling off a site that isnt finished myself, because it makes me feel good to have it there, but I know that the construction mess doesnt matter because

    A: Thats NOTHING to explain
B: Nobody is going to go check out my siter anyway, they are going to buy off my pitch and most of them wont go check up on my site first.

I know some will argue with this, but thats because alot of people talk theory, they are used to dealing with a random prospect or customer here and there and they havent seen how these things work over large numbers.

Selling directory listingas is very impersonal.

Chances are that 95% of the people who buy from your pitch who pay for five years will never even call you in that time, but they keep paying.

There are certain laws and principles that cant be seen clearly until you start dealing with masses.

For instance, because I have a mass of posts, I see all kinds of things in this forum that someone with 300 posts doesnt see.

You can tell me what an individual thinks, which is great, but I can tell you what the AVERAGE individual thinks across the numbers.

I said all that to say that once you get to selling things will look different.

In short, most people who buy from you will buy from your puitch and never even visit the website.

You have more than enough listings to start selling- "something"- I think you may be distracting yourself with busy work and not wanting to do the thing that really matters... "Procrastination"...There is one thing that matters above all else in offline, and you can do it with no website at ALL- "selling".

Isnt that the story of our life though...

You are ready, quit playing with webdesign programs and start putting your selling strategy together. I wouldnt put up one more listing until my selling machine was riocking...its not worth it,... When it makes money then it will be.

Get a basic directory site up - David Stewart had one up in 3 days...Just a basic directory site- fill it as you sell.

As far as naysayers- Some of the poorest , most unl;ikely people in the world are way richer today than the people who looked down upon them as being less than- those people are not their personal butt kissers-

Just "show them". Thats all. Sit down and simply say "Time to show them"- and do it.

    Hope this helps.

Ps. "How dio you keep going when no one understands you"?????

What kind of talk is that?

I have 99 personal problems right now that are way deeper than no one understanding or supporting me, and I have made hundreds of thousands of dollars in the midst of them.Dont expect people to carry you emotionally through this...

Expect people to be standing around saying "WHERES THE MONEY< YOU OWE ME< YOU BETTER PRODUCE SOME FINANCES....", and learn to work through that. It's life.

Then if you are really serioous, show them 10k, hand them some spending money in a month and tell them to go do something and shut up so you can work.

Thanks John, that is exactly what I needed!

I know I'm putting off the most important part of selling and will re-evaluate what I'm doing.

I will concentrate on finishing off the core pages and build the listing pages as I go along. I have plenty to start selling and will do straight away.

Good luck with your directory site. I am also building a local directory right now and as soon as it starts to rank on the first page for my main keyword, I will start selling premium listings. I know this will be a long process to get a nice residual income out of this but I think it is totally worth the effort, because there are many directories out there that make good money.

What makes you think that you need 9000 pages to launch it? Launch it right away and keep growing it in time. The important point is not the number of pages but the amount of traffic it will get. So, while adding pages to it, make sure to improve its rankings at the same time.

I totally understand how everyone expects you to fail. They want you to fail because they believe that they can make money only if they work 9-5, getting orders from someone all day. And you are about to prove that they are wrong, that's why they don't want you to succeed. Don't listen to them, just focus on what you are doing and you will be earning your life in a way that they couldn't even imagine. Even then, when you start making five figures monthly, they will keep trying to take you down. This is the human nature.

I've had some sleep now and my mind is straight.

The reason I need to have a certain amount of pages is because this is a secondary, complementary part of my plan. I need the site to be at a certain stage as it will be in every home in a city.

I am initially going to cover the city in a local business advertising campaign which will make me money and get my brand out there. This was my initial idea and I only started building the directory site to add more value and bring in extra income.

I will only do this one postcode at a time, so I have worked out that I only need to finish each postcode first on the directory site. This won't take long and can be done as i go along. The city i am doing has about 100 postcodes.

Sorry if this sounds a bit vague and mis-matched, but I have a plan and once I have got started in selling, I will give out more info whether it goes well or not.
