Hosting clients website - login info

I have a difficult client who I just build 2 websites for, he didn't like the 2nd website looked so I rebuilt the homepage (I waived the cost of this). I waived the cost because I knew he would be coming back to me for changes down the road, which I would charge him for.

We agreed that I would host both websites for a monthly fee as well as keep plugins updated. If he wants any changes it is at an hourly rate.

All of a sudden, he wants the login and password for the websites (I am assuming to make his own changes down the road). If he makes any changes and he messes up the website, I can see him blaming it on me.

I am going to pick up the remaining payment tomorrow and am going to tell him that when I host websites, I don't provide my client with the login and password as I manage the website.

Am I out of line here?

My biggest worry is if I grant him access that any mess-up will be blamed on me.

Thanks.

I make all of my clients sign a contract, which in short, states my services are "as is."

They agree and are advised not to mess around with the site. If something goes wrong, then I charge them the hourly fee to fix it. That prevents them from going in and even changing anything themselves... 1 little change and a quick payment to me is a lot cheaper than them messing something up, requiring me to go back in and fix it!

If I was in YOUR position, I would make the client sign an agreement before collecting the money.

Well, in my opinion, all lots of clients would like to have the log in details, because they want to be in control of their site.

However in reality, they dont really have the time to learn and change anyth, max they are only adding some contents, (provided the site is build on wordpress)

If he want just give him the log in, you just export the whole site on your data, so you can have a seperate back up ready in hand, if anything going wrong, it will only take your couple of minutes to put the back up on, so its find to give him the log in if its me.

    Hope it helps.

AS the post above me has said, it's best to get them to sign a contract before you start the work.

No, I don't think you're out of line saying that, that's perfectly fine.
