First Local Business Website Design Sale using bartering...

So my landscaper and I are pretty cool. We're both small business owners so we talk about the trials and tribulations of this. In the past I've given him some generic business advice and words of wisdom. It's to the point where he shares personal things with me that he probably wouldn't tell other clients.

Today he wasn't suppose to cut the grass. But I changed my mind and called him to do so. As we were chit chatting. It dawned on me, he would be a perfect first client for my budding website design business. I basically just shot from the hip. I asked him if he had a website. (I knew he didn't because it's never on his invoices or business card.) He obviously said no. He said he tried Yellow Pages website program and I already knew it sucked and was over priced. So we talked about that.

Then I said nonchalantly. Would you like a free website? He said hell yea! I told him I would create the website for him and advertise it in exchange for doing my lawn for free.
So I'm going to whip something up soon and send it to him. Then I'm going to over deliver and provide him some additional tips on how to get business and will do some advertising on craigslist and other classified ads for him. I plan to also do some google place setup and optimization as well.

He charges $65 a week to cut my grass and will probably be doing it until October so that's around how much I would have charged for the website. Next summer when his site is going to expire I'll ask if he wants to continue. If I do my job right, he should!
It will also be a great case study to learn from.

Now I'm thinking of other people I can barter with to get some other free stuff done around my house. lol

Obviously I'll still be doing this for money. But it goes to show there are different ways to go about this business.

    That's great!

Yea, it never hurts to exchange services at all. I got my first client basically the same way.

A guy I've known for years owns a carpet cleaning business and I noticed his website had the old "under construction" thing on it, so I called him up and said I would do it for him.

And now I get my carpets cleaned a few times a year in exchange, so that's pretty cool. Since I live with a dog who pisses on the floor every 10 seconds this has actually turned out to be a pretty big money saver too!

Now I just need to get in tight with a brewery owner and I'll be set!

Man, my carpet could use some cleaning too. My friend's uncle own's a cleaning business so maybe I'll approach him. Thanks for the idea. I have a dog that has the same habit. But we keep him near the patio door on the wood floor to limit the damage. lol

I love the brewery owner bartering idea. Boy would that come in handy regularly. lol

It's funny you mention that because I was planning to do CL and backpage ads for this guy regularly too. Do you find that it helps your landscaper get leads? I do want to help him drum up more business too in addition to creating the website.

I have done this for Frineds and family

My Driving Instructor - Just went self employed - so did there site for them in exchange for Lessons

A Paintball shop - Site for free gear

I think exchange of goods are always a great way to do business especially if your only doing it in your spare time

Agreed. I have family friend that is a painter and does power washing. I'm about to hit him up for an exchange too. Everyone wins this way and it builds a nice portfolio to show clients.

This is not a sale of any kind. This was a trade. When are you going to start doing this for money?

As I said I plan to do it for money as well. But I do view what happened today as a sale because my landscaper charges me $65 per week to cut the lawn. That's about 3-4 months out of the year EVERY year I live in my house. If I can get him to do this indefinitely for maintaining his site and promoting him online then you do the math and tell me how much money I just saved and thus "made".

That being said I'm also going after "regular" sales this coming week. I talked to my partner/ sales guy and will be training him on everything Monday. He'll do all the cold calling and emailing. And I'm confident by the end of next week I'll have a few sales which I'll report back. But the whole point of this post was to just give proof of concept from an offline newbie. And hopefully it will help other newbies find a different approach to build up their confidence and portfolio so when they do approach prospects it's a bit easier. Hope that makes sense?

I just did a barter a few months ago with a local auto repair shop for some major repairs on my car. Now we have an ongoing deal for repairs since I cover his hosting and SEO.

In fact, he's also giving me a 'paying' website design job for a self defense club he is part owner of. Barter is definitely worth it.
