The Secret To Success: Opening Doors and Creating Luck
I was just thinking about how many things there are to do when it comes to starting a business. It doesn't matter if you offer mobile websites, website redesign, SEO, SMS, Social Media, copywriting or any other service. You might own a newspaper, or flower shop for all I know, but the truth is that no matter what, there are lots of things to do!
We have accounting, marketing, inventory, technical stuff, operation issues and many more things that we need to do. I don't want to get into all that, all I care to expand on is marketing.
Marketing is a funny thing. We all need it, we all need to market our business or else we don't have a business. Next time that arrogant prick tells you that they don't do marketing, don't question him, just laugh and move on. Why? Because even those that survive on word of mouth, are still partaking in marketing. They still have ads, they still have business cards, they still network and probably have signage at their business location... and guess what? That's STILL marketing. People like that, aren't worth your time.

Marketing is something a lot of people don't seem to understand. There are a lot of debates on here that REALLY are USELESS. It doesn't get anybody anywhere because it's debating intricacies that make such a small difference that it just doesn't matter. People say one thing doesn't work, because they haven't had success with it. Forget those people...
Some people think that certain marketing tactics are a matter of luck. Some people think only one form of marketing is enough.
When I was a kid, I remember being excited to stay in a hotel when we went out of town. I used to run around inside the room, open all the drawers, jump on the bed, open all the doors to see what it leads to. The biggest bummer was opening the door to the other hotel room. You know how some of them connect and have the door that's locked? You open a door just to see another door that you can't open. WTF? That's one of the most frustrating things in the world! LOL
Now, think about how that is relevant to marketing. EVERY SINGLE form of marketing, is a way to open a door.
1 day you decide to pick up the phone and cold call businesses, good for you... but then you get frustrated because you're trying to open doors just to find that there's another door in your face, and it's locked. WELL HOT DAMN, I guess that means cold calling doesn't work right?
So you move on to the next thing, and you send emails, just to realize the same thing has happened. You're probably thinking that all of us that talk about marketing, just get lucky, or it's a myth, or we're just lying to you to somehow profit off your misfortunes down the road.
The way you're viewing things, is so WRONG that I can't help but shake my head when I see someone complaining that something doesn't work.
The entire point of marketing and using different tactics, isn't to expect a hidden treasure when you open a door. Sometimes you'll see a locked door... you won't be able to have success within a certain amount of time. Maybe something doesn't work for you right then, but that isn't the point.
You keep opening doors because eventually there's going to be something behind the door. Someone out there is WAITING FOR YOU to open that door because they're tired of seeing locked doors themselves.
Sometimes, in order to open as many doors as possible, you have to use a variety of marketing techniques. I know some of you know exactly what I mean when I say that you need to have a TRUE marketing plan, not just one trick up your sleeve to make you a couple bucks, but a TRUE strategy that has multiple parts to it that is working together and helping you open the doors you desperately need.
Cold calling by itself can get you results. It's enough according to some people, but for me it isn't enough. No measure of marketing is enough. Emailing people, yeah it can yield some results, but not enough to build your business off of. Direct mail, it's great, but if you're only using that, I think it's a problem.
REAL marketing and advertising isn't about staying comfortable. It's about stepping out of your comfort zone, utilizing tools that complement each other in order to open doors.
For those of you stuck using JUST linkedin, or just email, or just cold calling... I challenge you, to diversify your marketing.
If you're getting results right now... imagine if you had everything working together?
Man, it is AMAZING when I'm cold calling, while posting classified ads, using linkedin and facebook, sending out email campaigns, having incoming calls from direct mail and PPC. It's a FREAKING MONSTER. You want to make 5k/mo and are happy with that, then stick with what you've been doing.
If you want to start making 20K, 30K and MORE per MONTH, start feeding the baby monster you have and soon enough you're going to have a BEAST of a business.
When you have a variety of techniques in motion, you're opening more doors than you could have ever expected to even exist!
You want luck? Open enough doors and you'll get your luck!
