*Update* WARNING: This Little Ad Trick Blows The Competition Out Of The Water! Or $25k in 2 days

4/2/2013 Time for an update on this ad commentary.
Checking for this ad over the internet there are a few still running it
and I don't see any variations of it.

Here's how to add variation to it to keep it fresh after it gets copied or the response starts to drop off.

Keep up to date with split test results from sources like Marketing Experiments,
web split testing software blogs and web optimization blogs.

Two split test results came to my attention recently where they bumped up closed sales by 400% just by doing away with the contact form and emphasizing the phone number.

Now here's how you would say this in this type of ad...

"There are 2 common ways prospects will contact you.
Make sure your web designer knows which one should be used
and eliminate the other because tests have shown one makes 4x more customers.
[It's like free money because you aren't investing more money in your marketing.]"

Never tell them what makes a big difference in response.
You let them know there are 2 choices and one makes a huge difference.

They gotta get this from you because nobody else is showing their expertise
which affects their bottom line like this style.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since there has been such a positive response to this post..

http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...out-water.html

I thought I'll show you a full ad with commentary on it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Warning: Don't Buy Web Design Until You Get Answers To These 5 Questions!”

Ask them what's the difference between a website
that looks good, and one that gets your phone ringing.
The surprising answer is in one word
[Answer: tested]

Want more leads..? then ask your web designer whether putting price on the offer page is right, because knowing this gave SafeSoft Solutions, a supplier of call center equipment, 100% more leads

Get more buyers to your showroom, by asking your designer which 3 design layouts matter most? Hyundai Holland tested these 3, and got 63% more requests for a test drive

Want to have quote requests left on your website? Then make sure your designer places the form in the correct place. This was tested and made a 110% difference in the number of leads

Want more phone calls from buyers? Then you had better make sure your designer puts more emphasis on one of these 2...great offer...credibility...because Cook Travel tested the 2 and one got 48% more phone calls each day.

Don't risk your future with un-tested web design work and call xxxx xxx to get all these questions answered now, because this is far too important to ignore.

A community service by [company name]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Headline is the same structure as in previous post.

2 Get straight into re-framing the buyers buying criteria straight out of the gate

3 Used specific names and numbers to create believability, because if they don't believe you, they won't buy, no matter how good the deal

4 Borrowed all those case studies and names, to show you how to do it even if you are brand new with no client results

5 used case studies for different situations...phone in's, ask for quote on website
or visit showroom. Because we want the different readers to know there is a fit for them

6 Used the word "un tested" to create a clear choice.

7 Strong call to action which uses the word "because".
If you read the book on influence, then you know it's power to lift compliance

8 Positioned it as a Community Service to be in another category in the buyers mind

There you go, all laid bared on how a competition crushing ad is made for classified sections.

Best,
Ewen

P.S. I do have all those case studies of split tests on file,
so not made up.

      Thanks for your question.

Now you've experienced the power of it,
because you want those questions answered.

      And so will the buyers.

And here's a little secret, I'm not a web designer,
but knew how to dig up the research and then put it
together in an ad in such a way,
it makes me seem the biggest authority on the subject.

Once again, I'm just demonstrating the immense power this type of ad has,
      as others have testified.

Do you give the answer to these questions on the ad itself or do you wait for people to call you and then give them the answers?

Definitely NOT in the ad because the curiosity gets them to call you to get the answer.

I just posted one ad following the format: The ad was posted on CL items wanted section targeting 'junk car buyers' - Will keep posted if the phone rings

    Here is the ad:

Title: WARNING: JUNK CAR BUYERS - Don't Post Another Ad Until You Get Answers

    Body:

WARNING: JUNK CAR BUYERS - Don't Buy Direct Mail Until You Get Answers To These 7 Questions!

When using a direct mail campaign where your advertisement is delivered directly to people's mailboxes, so you could buy more junk cars, you must ask these questions so you are not taken for a 'ride'.

Ask them what is the difference between direct mail ad that looks good, and one that gets your phone ringing. - Knowing this can be the difference between buying 1 junk car instead of dozens.

Want more leads..? then ask your direct mail supplier whether putting price on the offer is right, because knowing this gave SafeSoft Solutions, a supplier of call center equipment, 100% more leads.

Get more junk car sellers to your yard, by asking your ad designer which 3 design layouts matter most? - Hyundai Holland tested these 3, and got 63% more requests for a test drive.

Want more phone calls from sellers? Then you had better make sure your designer puts more emphasis on one of these 2...great offer...credibility...because Cook Travel tested the 2 and one got 48% more phone calls each day.

Want to buy 'better' junk cars? Ask your direct mail company why it's better to target 'affluent' communities instead of the ghetto. - This alone is the difference between crushing a car or selling it for top dollar.

Want to bee seen? Then you better ask your direct mail company what is the difference between your direct mail ad delivered in an envelope compared to a 'NAKED GIANT'. - This is the difference between the sounds of crickets or your phone ringing off the hook

Ask you direct mail company if you are exclusive. - This alone can give you 100% of junk can sellers instead of splitting them with your competitors.

Don't risk your future with un-tested direct mail campaigns and call xxx-xxx-xxxx to get all these questions answered now, because this is far too important to ignore.

Not sure his phone will ring exactly. Needs a lot of tidying up and focus.

The wrecking niche is a good one but owners are tough and set in their ways. If it aint broke don't fix it and many find it less hassle to just go with old traditional marketing because they don't have time for it. Of course we know that is why we can help them do better.

I got those quotes from 2 websites...
      marketingexperiments.com
      visualwebsiteoptimizer.com

It's not a definite left or right placing,
it's putting it on the same side as the readers
      brain function.

Let me explain, you may of heard that people are either left or right brained
in how they process information. some people are naturally more technically minded and the others are more creative. I've forgotten which side of the brain they each fall into.

So if your audience is more left brained, then you put the sign up form on the left side and right side if they are right brained.

How clever was that to ever come up with that idea to split test?!

      Best,
      Ewen

I can't find any split test where it shows the 110% increase in leads, based on the side the form gets placed on.

        However, I do know this:

        Left Brain is technical
        Right Brain is creative

Hope that helps a little for anyone using that question in their add!

Jeff's tests show just text and in red outperform others

This cannot be emphasized strongly enough.

I spent an hour watching a YouTube video from one of the webinars presented by Marketing Experiments. Learned more about page optimization and improving conversion in that one hour than I have in all the lurking I have done on this site. Precise, well thought out, backed by data type of presentation.

Yea if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be putting a down payment on a 48' yacht next month. Now he just needs to stop spilling all of the copy he wrote for me all over the forum. :p

        Thanks man.

You'll have to send through a photo of your new 48 footer

Where is the best place to promote this ad? Craigslist? I did a quick search for the title on CL and got 9 results. I will have to test. I do sell websites on CL and my average is one sale per 5 ads either posted or renewed.

If someone made some kind of WSO on how to 'test' your website for lead generation, covering all the bases on good testing, I'd buy it right now.

Any ideas on where we could find this sort of info Ewen?

      Thank you.

I've been fascinated by direct response advertising since the
      late 80's.

I was selling a weight loss product through newspaper advertising.

The ad's call to action was to phone in.

I'd close them over the phone.

Here's how clunky the sales process was back then.

I'd get them to go to the bank and deposit into my bank account and get me to phone me back to say they had done it.

Then I'd ring my bank to see if the deposit had shown up.

If it had I'd call the courier to pick up the diet and send off.

I also gave them the choice of credit card too.

I wasn't a merchant, so I'd call a associate who was and read out the card numbers and he'd process the order for me...sometimes 2 or 3 days later!

Yet that little home based enterprise allowed me to buy 5 rental houses within 2 years!

Another occasion in the early nineties I had someone send me a cheque for a little over $1,000 in the mail without talking to him, just from a letter.

Another time Through a Fax, I got Jay Abraham to send me $5,000 worth of his training material in the post to New Zealand for free.

So I knew the value of a good ad.

Since then I've studied most of the masters of direct response advertising.

You might say I've been bitten by the bug!

      Best,
      Ewen

I guess then we need to know what the type of reader we are dealing with? How to know which side of the brain the person is reading from?

      Thanks David.

Yes to expand on the fear point, many split tests have shown the fear of loss or fear
of making a mistake is a stronger motive than gain.

A fear of what other people will think, fear of buying a fake item, the fear of bad financial decision, the fear of embarrassing themselves in front of friends and peers.

      The list goes on.

So in a way the ad unconsciously did play to the fear of making a mistake when buying web design.

      Best,
      Ewen

Can we apply this sort of ad if we are offering SEO, Google+ Local oprimization, SMS, mobile websites, etc.?

All we would need is some questions related to the service we are offering and use those in the ad copy correct?

How about valid data to quote in our ad copy when it comes each of these types of services? Where can we get those references from?

Yes you can apply it to those areas.

You just need to match those questions
        to one service though.

We would need to see if there is a better approach though,
because buyers may be looking for a specific result,
and we would have those questions about those results.

Those services of yours then become the means to the desired result.

Probably best this goes onto the ad section as this is kinda promotional.

There are 2 common methods prospects will contact you.
Make sure your web designer knows which one should be used
and eliminate the other because tests have shown one makes 4x more customers.
[It's like free money because you aren't investing more money in your marketing.]

Never tell them what makes a big difference in response.
You let them know there are 2 choices and one makes a huge difference.

They gotta get this from you because nobody else is showing their expertise
which affects their bottom line like this style.

Ewen, great as always. Is this style of copy only really for classified type adverts? Or could they be used with direct mail/email?

If your till roll business was starting from scratch would you use this type of copy?

        Thanks

Yes best used when a buyer finds you when searching.

It's optimizing their thought pattern while comparing other options
and when you are amongst other advertisers.

Here's an article on comparison shopping...People Comparison Shop, Stupid | ConversionXL

In my till roll business it's a different situation.

The prospects have already a supplier...
usually the supplier of the hardware or the big office supply stores.

They don't go online looking for the rolls.

The best way to reach the decision maker and close sales is cold calling
and sometimes I walk in cold if I'm in the area or want a rest from the phone.

          Best,
          Ewen

I know this reply is four months late, but, thanks for the update.

An online marketing business is in a unique position compared to a brick and mortar business. Because of it's nimbleness, change (which happens constantly) is an opportunity to make money.

And, you showed us Warriors just that... how to use new information to your advantage. Thanks Ewen for that updat
