building a list for direct mail

I want to build a list for direct mailing and I'm not sure exactly what's the best way.

With Hoovers I can automatically build a list depending on my preferences correct?

If I want to use the least amount of money as possible (for the list) couldn't I just go to Manta and pick the companies individually and separate it by niche myself?

What do you guys recommend?

What are you offering in your mailing, and who are you targeting? If you're budget is tight and you'd prefer to save Manta is a great option. I know from experience though... It will take a good amount of time to build a significant list.

I offer a free consultation. I'm targeting local businesses in my area, specifically service businesses.

Out of 50 direct mail pieces, I've gotten one full time client and 2 more appointments. Even a list of 100-200 is more than enough for me for now. I guess I'll do Manta. Any other sites that are as good?

Quick question with the leads from infofree.com are they like hot leads like looking for IM services or leads just contacts that could or could not be looking for services?

Infofree does have hot leads but nothing IM related. I would think that finding an IM related physical mailing list would be difficult to find.

I wasn't exactly sure if I could filter out certain thing on Manta but I can. Time isn't an issue so I'll probably stick with building a manual list myself from there.

Thanks for the posts. I'll keep the other ones in mind as well.
