Can you run this business on <10 hours per week?

The last thing I want to do after I am consistently earning a decent bit is to be caught up in customer service or work too many hours. So I thought a bit of research is in order. I am not aiming for Tim Ferriss' "4 hour work week"... I thought that would be too much of a stretch.

Is it possible to earn between $8-10k per month by spending 10 hours or less on this website creating business? (web design, SEO, google places etc.) How would you do it?

PS. Please don't feed the trolls who detract from the thread.

Ashwin83 there are a number of things that you can do where you won't have to put a lot of time into eventually but like most businesses you have to build it up till it kinda makes a life of it's own. Member sites work well but you will have to develop a lot of material upfront to get it started.

Software of course is always good but unless your a programmer I urge you to avoid trying to create the next big software application. Bugs, hackers and fixes can take a lot of work.

Information products seem to be the easiest to set up and maintain. There are a lot of people you don't hear much about that are making huge money and working very little.

The only thing I can say is true success comes from hard work and determination. I's not always how much work you do but how smartly you work at it. Not sure if I helped ya.

    Answer to OP title:

"Yes". The trouble is that most dont even put IN 10 hours, and they feel like they put in twenty because they spread it out on busy work over the week, and they think they put in 20 hours and have actually put in 2-3 focused ones.

5 hours per week of cold calling even appointment setting will yield a few thousand dollars in business if you write good appointments for yourself, which anyone can do.

I have seen ONE person not have those results, but he had alot of personal problems at the time and was doing it from home and the suituation wasnt very good...

If you are willing to work about 4 twenty hour weeks then you could cut it down to ten easily and make 3-5k per week.

You wont be like Iamnameless making 100k per month mind you (however, that doesnt have to be true either) , but you can absolutely make a few grand in ten hours per week.

On another note 3-5k per week is really good by most peoples standards. Even 1-2k is better than most seeking opportunities are making currently.

If you will actually PUT IN the ten hours and do the right things then absolutely the answer is yes.

So those 4 twenty hour weeks are to establish the business? It might take more than that but I am ok with spending more time in the beginning to establish business.

My question had to do with working after a business establishes itself. I didn't want to get stuck and bound to contracts where I spent a lot of time everyday taking care of businesses' needs.

I'd say anything is possible! But yes, you'll have to put in more hours to establish your business. Work smart, follow Tim's advice about email & stuff - how to be more productive...outsource most of the work...And one day, you might be able to execute your initial plan!

Many (most) people around here work over 40hours a week. Most of them will tell you it's not doable...some might even say its lazy of you...or you aren't willing to work hard

I say do what others aren't doing, and let us know if it works Nothing to lose in working differently!
    Good luck!

I think working hard or long hours is overrated especially if you don't like the work. If you like what you do, it really doesn't feel like work.

The best thing to do is to manage client expectations. What I mean by that is, some clients will be ideal, you do your work and if they are on a monthly agreement with you, such as hosting or seo, they will seldom bother you. (as long as you deliver of course)

Some want to contact you for every single little thing. That kind of thing gets old quick, and that takes your valuable time from you. Manage that by offering additional coaching or mentoring at X amount per month, and it will be at a certain time. That will do two things, make you more money at your convenience and or stopping them from bothering you.

Also make sure you have at least 3 go to people or services for all of the things you need done.
Things like 3 web designers, 3 SEO providers, 3 video providers. Have your rolodex ready.

This way you are set for just managing projects, eventually you might want to hire a manager to do this as well.

Why not if you can make yourself capable of doing that then you can obviously expect that kind of outcomes.
But you have prove yourself before going to action.

      "less is more!"

Hard work will only ever get you so far in the business world......the rest is acting smart!

You probably won't get there from day one no matter how many gurus on here you follow or how many threads and wso's you read. You have to make those mistakes like I did before you can truly learn to move forward.

The key to working 10 hours or less a week if that's your aim is to outsource as much as your control freak instincts will let you and if you are of the mindset, "I can't afford it yet and hey I will do it myself as it's cheaper and I am sure I can do it."

My rebuttle to those thinking negatively is this take a deep breathe...don't think too hard, call the bank manager for a meeting about a loan, dip into your nest egg, max your credit card or ask your friends and family for a loan. Whatever it takes to get outsourcing if you truly want to earn more money or work less

You have read the wso's and the threads, you know you can do it you're just scared and anxious about the future but listen to your head...what is it saying?

Do as little work or as much as you want but outsource. Eventually if you want to be earning the big bucks you have to let go at some point and if you don't know the ins and outs of say linkbuilding or web design then give it to someone who does....there's no point spending hours, days or weeks learning something you don't like or know. For example I hate writing (excepts threads lol) and I hate having to constantly check if that software and this software is doing what I want it to.....why all the stress and the extra hours working when your can be working on your business and not in it.

Think about it's so cheap from just $150 a month from an outsourcer all you need to do is make a few cut backs at home and you could be hiring your first outsourcer today.

It's so simple...I just can't understand why sme folks over complicate things on here and make their lives a lot more harder and stressful. Trust me in the long run your family will thank you for outsourcing.

I sincerely hope someone takes in what I have said today....too many business owners I have cold called in the past have said that they don't have the money because business is bad.....guess what? That could be any of us on here who don't take action and just take a leap of faith and conviction forward to future business sucess.

John Durham is absolutely right. Most people only put a couple of focused hours into it. If it doesn't work they quit.

I saw Iamnameless's post the other day about how he got into offline marketing. He made a great point of your back being against the wall. So, I wanted to put it to the test to show everyone out there that he's exactly right. This is my first venture into offline business by the way. (I've always done SEO/PPC and info products)

    Here are my results:
I bought an aged domain on google auction and I built a website for my company (I did this a couple of months ago because of wanting to get into this. Just got sidetracked along the way). It's just a wordpress site with a woothemes theme on it. Took me a couple of hours max to build. I have done absolutely no SEO or anything else to the site. You all know this is the slow time of the year August. December is the other big slow down. So, I hit craigslist. I replied to about 100 gigs in major cities over about a 4 hour period. 3 hours Thursday night and 1 hour Saturday. So far I have closed one deal for $1500 and have begun work and am negotiating a second deal for $800. That's $2300 in 4 hours worth of work! I've also upsold the $1500 one into a monthly SEO deal as well. I fully anticipate making $8k this month and $15k next.

    Next steps:
I'm going to continue through the rest of this week to contact people in major cities for about an hour a day. Then, next week I'm going to take some of the upfront money I've made and hire someone to take over those efforts of contacting daily. I've got guys to outsource to I've used before for website design, one for seo, one to handle ppc, etc. But to make this realistic I'm building the sites for now. I'm only using wordpress and not doing a bunch of custom high end stuff. In a week of more jobs I'll have too much to do and turn it over to my outsourcers. I'll ramp this up to what should turn into a $40-$50k per month business by Jan-Feb of next year. Out of that I'll likely make around $25k per month profit. I'll then start taking profits out and actually spend money on advertising. I'll be pushing for $100k per month by summer next year.

I started this venture with a $12 domain name I bought on an auction. Not bad for $12 and some taking action. Sorry if it seems like I'm hijacking your thread. I just really want you guys to see what taking action will get you. I did all of this without even picking up a phone. Imagine if I went through and built up my business and hired a call center to do out bound cold calls for me? Easily $2-3 million per year. (Don't think I'm not working on that too.)

The key is taking action and being focused on your objective. Also, using your time wisely. You will put in a few weeks of hard work then put it on autopilot.

Don't know why anyone would assume the OP is lazy. Perhaps he realizes YOLO and wants to use that time to its fullest. Tim Ferriss has done the world a favor by opening up the possibility that you don't have to follow the status quo of the 40 hour plus work week working for pentince that Corporate America decides you get to live on.

He has changed my world view and even if I only achieve the 20 hour work week it will be a victory. Good luck to you Ashein83. Don't ever let anyone steal your dream!
