TIM HORTON'S PROSPECT!

I just got home from Tim Hortons (yes, I'm Canadian!) and I had an interesting exchange with a mechanic while waiting in line. Not to say that this is a definite sale or anything, but an interesting conversation that has potential to spark into a sale, nonetheless.

I was waiting in line (it was excruciatingly long this afternoon, only one register open. #CanadianProblems) and I noticed a man in what was most-obviously the typical dark-blue mechanics uniform that we all see every so often.

I obviously can't remember the exact wording of how the conversation went, but he made small talk and it went something like this:

I then pulled out my business card and told him to give me a call and we could discuss how to benefit his business. I assumed he would say thanks politely, accept the card, and that would be it. But his reply pleased me!

He extended his arm for a handshake before he walked up to place his order.

I really enjoyed this conversation. I think that if he does call (he did seem genuinely interested) it will be a very easy sale to close right over the phone considering we've already met in person. Either that or we discuss meeting up to finalize - which wouldn't be terrible either.

I'd call this luck, but if you get nothing else from this thread I'd like to point out that although the chance for me to warm up a lead in line at Tim Horton's are slim, the possibility for it occurring when you do not take action is a flat 0%. I didn't hard sell him or come off as a solicitor or pushy -- we simply had a nice, casual conversation and I ended up getting lucky with it.

I'm starting to see more and more threads of this kind pop up, and I'm happy about that. It means people are seizing potential opportunities and taking action. Try it yourself if you haven't already. Stop reading up on things and put what you know to use.

Again, this wasn't the exact conversation as I obviously do not remember the dialogue perfectly. It went directly along those lines, though.

ALSO, If you don't have some business cards yet you NEED to get on that. They're still a valuable tool and it's great to carry some with you in your wallet. You never know when they may come in handy.

THIS EVENT DID 3 THINGS FOR ME:
  • It provided me with what might become a solid sale.
  • It validated my reasoning for buying business cards.
  • It gave me something to do while waiting in line. Lol!

Looks like luck is on my side today! Hope you enjoyed.

    • Haha, wasn't all me. Luck was on my side, but thought it had a nice moral to the story. If one has the chance to casually create an opportunity and provide a needed service, step up!

Thanks Lopaca! and hahaha, real funny!

  • If this prospect doesn't call you at the time you agreed upon, call them.

Make sure it's not a bad time (things do crop up).

Instead of doing this by phone, you want to get that appointment...probably right back at the TH you met at. Good feelings all 'round!

"Hey, we could do this by phone...but I'd really like for us to be able to draw out what you want with pen and paper. What's your schedule like...are you able to meet at that TH? We can get a lot more done there than by phone."

When you meet, get him to physically draw what he'd like, and tell you about it. Make any adjustments you think will help, with his agreement, and name your investment.

You may discover he got cagey in the meantime because it's on his radar now. If so, dig for pain and don't cave (he's already admitted he's not tech-savvy). You know this:

    Get that face-to-face time!

    • Great advice. I'll do the face to face thing. It'll take a little bit more time but I think I could really read him and draw a higher number out of him if I can really DRAW OUT and get him to grasp some concepts to help validate his acknowledgement of need of service in the first place. You're totally right.

      Thanks!
  • Go CANADA!

Great to see another Canuck moving on up in this world!

You should come visit BC, it's the best part of Canada, lol.

    All joking aside, great job.

Are you just offering web design, or do you also offer SEO, email marketing and other services?

    • Haha, I plan on it!

Only web design currently. I'm starting SEO campaigns via cold calling tomorrow morning, though!
  • Jon,

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

You prepared by getting the business cards in advance and the opportunity presented itself.

You developed the luck, Jon. Go get some more mate. You're a winner

    • That's always been a favorite quote of mine, actually! Thanks.
  • Don't degrade your success by calling this occurrence "luck."

Only thing I would SUGGEST doing differently is getting HIS information or to have set an appointment.

But other than that, great job. I hope my son kicks ass one day as much as you.

PS: Our family used to own a cottage on Lake Huron in Kincardine -- not too far from London. Miss it dearly.

    • I've visted a cottage off of Lake Huron too - it was a good time!

      Forgot to add an update:

He did eventually call me and I ended up closing a $650 sale! Going to upsell down the road as well. Take action, guys.
  • People that take action create their own luck.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Might have to steal that quote from you sometime - it's a good one! Thanks.
