Yes. Your best bet is to start your own group and get business owners to join your group.
Then, mail all of them once a week.

However, you shouldn't be relying on just LinkedIn to grow your business.

I have a lot of success on Linkedin... DO NOT send out bunches
of messages. You will get banned.

First seek out those in the niche you are focused on and send them
connection requests. If they connect with you then you send them
a 'nice to connect with you' message. In that message you give a
quick overview of what you do and how it could help them.

You will also want to create a group and be proactive in it. You
will need to establish yourself and earn trust. Try to get recommendations
on your services so people will see those on your profile...

in fact, make sure your profile is 100% complete and informative. I
am amazed how many have a dead link to their website. People
will check you out so make sure everything is in order.

Linkedin takes some effort, but can pay off HUGE

EVERYONE does it. I have close to 1000 targeted contacts now.

Facebook says the same thing and I have almost 1500 business owners as
'friends' (I have a separate personal account).

It's spamming that will kill an account

Linkedin is a GOLD MINE, if done right.

As long as you are apart of a group that the member you'd like to message is in...there is NO limit to the amount of messages you can send.

Of course, you don't want to just spam them with a direct sale to your product/service.

That is wrong. How many messages would you take from someone you
barley know trying to sell something? Believe me when I say Linkedin
connections have very low tolerance. I'd spam someone on their 2nd
message to me.

If you are talking about hitting someone with a message once, that
is not as risky.

Almost 1000 connections and I have had only two emails from members
telling me about their business/offer. That says a lot about the culture.

Linkedin is very strict. Be smart or get booted.

LOL, trust me buddy...you are wrong. The questions was, "Is there a limit of emails that you can send out to owners of a targeted 'group'"

I am 100% positive that there is NO limit to the amount of messages you can send to group members of groups you are a part of.

Plus, connections have NOTHING to do with group members. They are 2 separate "avenues" on LinkedIn. So, please review LinkedIn basics 101. Thanks

I have been told you can send up to about 200 messages per day and I am getting ready to outsource this task to someone and send out about 1000 messages per week to people in groups that have people in a specific niche that I am targeting. More than that amount can get you banned.

Within Groups, I don't think there is a limit to how many many messages you can send of members of the Group you're in.

Having said that, I don't recommend it. My profile is optimized for my target Groups I'm in. I'll request to connect (changing the template "connect" email to something that lets them know why I'm connecting). Then, I give them a gift for connecting. If they accept the gift, then they've turned into a prospect. After I give them the gift (via email), they've been qualified and I move into presentation/close position.

At least, that's how I do it. The method above is only for members of Groups that I'm targeting.

I took a brand new gal, who has never sold anything in her life, using the method above, to close her first SEO deal in 7 business days for 799/mo. with a 6 month contract.

LinkedIn is a great lead channel.

Thanks for the inspiration! It seems that Linkedin is a much better tool when you have access to the premium features. The sad thing about groups these days is all the spammers taking them over.

This is what works for me:

1. Join Linkedin and have a complete profile
2. Put the word [LION] in your profile name. LION stands for LinkedIn Open Networker
3. Search for other LIONs use the people search. They will also find you.
4. Send connection requests to as many other LIONs in your target areas as possible
5. Once you have a few hundred connections and look legit, start sending connection requests to your real target market. Come up with an email talking about the benefits of connecting and how each of you will expand your networks by agreeing to connect
6. Once you have a nice base of connections (>2000), export your connections to your favourite email marketing package. I use Mailchimp
7. Send out weekly, fortnightly or monthly emails short and useful. BUT DON'T TRY TO SELL ANYTHING
8. Build trust and familiarity.
9. Be patient and eventually you will start to get business.

Basically you use Linkedin to build your list, but email that list outside of Linkedin. That way if there are any issues, you won't get banned from Linkedin.

Amen to that... Once I had over 1500 connections the number of people accepting my invitations grew to about 30 people per day...that's good list building!

For me, the tactic has been to build value and relationships while i'm on LinkedIn.

There's nothing worse than someone you don't know making you some kind of offer. It's spammy and intrusive.

So here's how you build relationships:

Join or create a group that is relevant to your target market / demographic.
Answer some of the questions they have that are relevant to your area of expertise.
After a while, send them to your valuable content that you've created on your blog with an option to get on your list.
When they are on your list, keep giving good content, work out what they need etc (segmenting etc)
Then ... Sell them a solution to what they are struggling with.

Linkedin is a different culture for sure. My experience has been that the people behave like FB and Twitter when it comes to just pushing offers on them. They'll visit out of curiosity, but won't buy anything at all. The recommendations by others on this thread are accurate with regard to strategy.

I personally wouldn't use LI as my primary prospecting method. I do think it is a good spoke in the wheel, but if you are just starting out, nothing will beat making phone calls. Fun? Not really. Effective? Yes.
