Coupons and Limited Time Offer vs. Limited Quantity

Hello everyone,

I am trying to answer the following two questions for a customer of mine. My customer has a very popular restaurant and wants to run a coupon promotion.

He wants to release the coupons through his website (no Groupon or other similar sites).

Now the question he has is "shall I run a limited time promo? let's say 24h. Or shall I only release a limited amount of coupons? "

He wants to create a big buzz and a high sense of scarcity. He wants to run this kind of promo maximum once a year.

The second question which is coming from me is the following: How do I make sure that each coupon downloaded from my customer's site is unique (unique serial number. I will not use barcodes)?
So everytime somebody clicks on the download button the code will have a unique serial code (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.).

I hope some of you will be able to help me out with that and give me your opinion on which special offer technique you would use.

    I would think it depends on volume.
    Do you have the potential to overload a single day? What about people that cant make it that day?

    Im thinking a limited amount may be best, but you will need to hit promotion hard to make it a sought-after thing.

    As far as numbers go, you could pre-generate a list of coupon codes. Every time someone clicks download it pulls the next coupon code from the database until theyve all been "handed out". When someone uses it though, it would be best to also have an app on the computer to enter that the coupon has been used. That way, no one can copy them.

    However, that may be a bit past the scope of the question. Though it wouldnt be too difficult a task for any web developer.

    Well the coupon will be valid for 30 days so I guess not all the customers will use the coupon on the same day.

      How is he promoting it? He may not get very much traffic to
      his site so 'the buzz' may be quiet. Past customers never visit
      sites usually.

    Yes he does have an email list, plus he will communicate it on his facebook page and twitter.

    Maybe look into SMS marketing. With those type of services, you can send a text blast out of all of his customers with a unique coupon code so he can measure how many have been redeemed and make sure that they are not used more than once.

    Why one or the other? You could use the coupons to get a steady income of traffic to his website and then when he needs a bust in his business you could do a more agressive campaign.

    I would said it would be the best set with limited quantities.
    Unless their business marketing is good like godadddy 0.99 which one day is enough to let the whole word know & grab it . If no , its better to stay with limited quantities so he do have time to promote it again and again to push it .
    While you can see groupon is using numbers of coupon or time to limit it. So it hard to generate different coupon all the time while i believe it taken lot of manual work .
    Its easy to create lot of coupon code but how they able to get different coupon code in the same link to download it ?
