I use reseller account from hostgator ($100 monthly).

If you want a complete whitelabel one; you can go for Hosting Reseller | Private label | Full automation | ResellerCluster

The aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous. The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him and sells itself.....

What types of sites are these?

A reseller account will be on the same lines as shared hosting in most cases, you're the owner and able to have multiple cPanel accounts owned by you.

A VPS would give you isolation & more control over your accounts & server itself. For example, if you need to change the php config or add a module you will need a VPS.

My suggestion would be to start off with a small reseller account and grow from there. Don't go for the largest reseller account for the cheapest price when comparing. There's a reason why some companies have lower specs at higher prices.

20GB at a smaller company for a higher price could be 10 times better than the other company offering 100GB. There are a lot of things that come into play when choosing a provider.

Everyone here is going to tell you to go to HostGator, so you might as well just sign up there. The majority of them have never even used another provider though.

If the company is on a "top 10" list somewhere, they are only the top paying "affiliate", regardless of the quality of their environments. If we could pay out 100+ per referral, we'd be on that list too.

I see what Kingfish is saying with Hostgator. Everyone will recommend them. However, I've been building websites and hosting them for 16 years now. I have used probably 20 different hosts over the years and settled on Hostgator 8 years ago. I'm on VPS servers at this point. I might go dedicated one of these days but the VPS has been good to me and my clients. I started with the basic reseller package at $24 per month or whatever they charge. Go with cpanel. For someone starting out cpanel is the easiest. Get that ebook for resellers that they offer with that package and read it. It will walk you through the setup of the server and how to get your hosting up and running. In 8 years with hostgator I barely ever remember my server being offline. If it was it was never for more than a few minutes. The worst was a blown drive one time. It was down one hour. And you can hop on chat at any time day or night.

If you don't mind, a few quick questions:

      1) If you have a reseller account, how does the client pay you? Do they just PayPal money to you each month?

      2) Do you have the client go to GoDaddy or NameCheap and register their own domain name? Or, do you register it (and, perhaps, transfer it later)?

      3) What if the client already has hosting and wants to use it? Do you just upload the site you build to their hosting via FTP? Or, do you insist on hosting it?

      Thanks,

      John

        Good questions.
        1. I set them up with paypal subscriptions using WHMCS. I get a license for $5 per month from Hostgator. It has payment processing, support center, affiliate program, etc all built in. I'm about to setup a merchant account and just integrate it all into my main site which is wordpress. There are plugins for all of it.

        2. I am an affiliate of Godaddy with CJ.com. (I've been with Cj for like 9 years I think) So, I offer free domain names if they don't already have one. I go onto CJ and grab an affiliate link for a good price like $7 or $4.99. Whatever the best deal is at the time. I register it in my godaddy account at a discount and get a commission from it as well making it even cheaper. I never charge the client for that. I tell them it's included.

        3. If they have hosting I build the site on my own server. Then, once they approve and make the final payment within 24 hours I ftp it to their server. The only time I ever say anything in regards to hosting if they have their own account is if they are running wordpress on godaddy or something like that. It's a beating to get a CMS system working on godaddy because of their cloud setup and permissions issues. It can be done but I'd rather not deal with it. And I have about 16 years experience as a developer/server admin/DBA. I went with Amazon AWS for a couple of my sites not long ago for a test. I ended up moving them back to my VPS server at hostgator. Amazon has a great system and I know server command line very well. But, it got old when cpanel is all point and click. Got lazy.

        Hope that helps.

Thank you for the info. I know how to set websites up for myself, but I was unclear about the mechanics of billing, ownership/transfer issues, etc. when doing it for clients.

          A few more things...

          1) What is "WHMCS"?

          2) If you buy the domain name, you would own it. Do you later transfer ownership of it to the client?

          3) Also, how do you handle domain name renewals? Do you just bake it into their monthly hosting fee?

          Thanks,

          John

This is good advice, however, you should spend a little time looking around. If you're looking for performance & quality environments, stay away from these bargain hosts. HostGator is still using ancient hardware from ThePlanet.

Don't get me wrong, HostGator is a great company, until they started stuffing every server they have with massive amounts of accounts to maximize profits. Load a Wordpres admin area on their shared/reseller and you'll see what I mean. I used to use HostGator years ago, until their performance started to slip.

If you're looking for cheap bargain hosting and nothing more, then sure.

I'd like to see what the benchmark tests are on some of their servers.

Ive had the same sort of results. Over the years I have tried many different hosts roughly 4.. Hostgator has been the only one that I haven't felt like screaming at haha. Although I havent been with them for 8 years, I have had the chance to use there servers for the past 6 month and have been very satisfied.

I've used Future Hosting for a few years. I have a managed VPS with them. When they upgrade their packages (which they seem to do a couple of times a year), I get upgraded either automatically or I put in a support ticket and they upgrade me. I was with past hosts where they update their pricing and you get stuck on old plans with old specs, these guys upgrade you whenever they have new offers with improved specs. There support is very fast also.

There is no branding or anything you can brand if you want.

For most companies that don't use a lot of custom scripts and have a whole bunch of smaller sites you can get away with reseller hosting. You might want to try Web Hosting Talk - The largest, most influential web hosting community on the Internet for some good offers and for real reviews.
