Good question, like to know peoples' answers to this as well...

For my part, it seems to me that a main aim is to get links from local businesses back to the site I operate for local businesses. That way google will know it highly valid and will rank the links higher.
I think its important to make sure you have good tags on these links, that INCLUDE the locality.

e.g. Web Design in woking, for a site called WokingWebDesign.

I will share with you some basic information.
I start with keyword research and select buyer keywords to go after.
Then I check out my competition to see what is needed to rank on the 1st page, this confirms my keywords.
After that I optimize on-page to match the targeted keywords.
Followed by submissions to directories/citations, even if it is only SEO and not Places.
Lastly is backlinking and social media submission/integration.
All of the steps are more involved, but that is the just of it.

Nice concise posts that would help many aspirants. Social media integration is the key! Facebook fan pages are awesome especially for local businesses. As for Twitter, I have just started with it but already I'm seeing how effective it is on improving a business' presence because of its location functionality.

Not much different from SEO for any business.
The only difference is that you can use keywords to indicate where you are based and also you can choose to target specific locations. That is all!

The keyword competition can make your effort more tough. So make sure you start to research keyword better than anything else.

Focus your internal factor and then external factor

I've had best results with targeting keywords that show up with maps results. SEO changes, and things are volatile, but when you're sending optimization to a Google Plus Local page (Places), it's more steady, and as long as you're legit and play by their rules, it's very achievable.

I recommend outsourcing this work, but know how to do it. Basically:

    1. Get the client
    2. Keyword research
    3. Outsource the work
    4. Repeat

Here's a heatmap showing the parts of a local Google search result and where people's eyes drift first, and for the longest time. As you can see, even though G+ Local (maps results) aren't at the tippity top of the page, they're the majority of the views.

Also, make it clear to your clients that just because traffic doesn't necessarily increase 1000%, that doesn't mean they won't get more calls. Many people will click the placemarker and simply call the business without going to the site. Track the calls with software, make sure they have a closer on their end of the phone.

    Good luck.

There is a way to get the #1 spot in G maps and the top spot for ALL the keywords you want all in about 30 minutes... BUY them. My life became MUCH easier after I starting just buying my traffic.

You can turn it on in less then an hour and if a client drags their feet with payments... you can turn off the traffic even faster. Trust me they are never late twice.

    Hey there,

Have you tried using PPC? If you want faster results, better stick to this one.
