Some Background On This Post
***********************
This post was inspired by a story John Durham shared here: http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...ml#post5934094, his openness prompted me to share mine, this was sometime in March this year.

John suggested my story was better as it's own thread and I pondered that for 5 months now (wow), well, I just saw another thread by a desperate young lad and I felt compelled to pull my post from John's original thread so folks in the position in my title can see this hopefully much faster and easier and get some inspiration if not even a way out and up the ladder.

I hope this helps someone somewhere... Good luck...

Your Way Out Of Being Broke-'n'
***********************
OK, so...

Safe to say.... we've probably ALL been there... I know I have too--many, many times...

Here's my own simple step plan (and one I have used successfully in the past)...

(While I have always been lucky to have a roof over my head, I have had times when there was NOTHING else BUT the roof, and this is what I did and that I believe others can do too)...

1. Pray. Serious. If you're someone who believes in that kind of stuff. I believe it helps.

2. If you wish to skip no. 1, then try this... BELIEVE. It is the first and ONLY way to achieve ANYTHING. ANYTHING. ANYTHING. Did I say ANYTHING already?

3. Make a SERIOUS DOABLE plan. Without a plan you're NOT going to get out of any mess easily if at all--the latter will happen ONLY if you're one those darn lucky guys or gals--you know the type--if you're NOT one of those... Sit your butt down, and MAKE A DOABLE PLAN.

4. Get up off your butt at this point and FOLLOW THAT PLAN.

I'll even do you one better, I'll share a plan very similar to one I used once to get out of being broke and virtually hopeless...

THE PLAN...

Here's what you can do if you're totally cash broke. Have no roof, no computer, talk much less of Internet access, no money, nothing. Not even the first, second or third meal of the day like most folks get...

1. Visit the busiest, most middle class part of your city where there are many shop or business owners...

2. Offer to build a CHEAPO ONE PAGE WEB SITE for them IN 24 HOURS or NO CHARGE.

3. Charge them just 20 bucks--it's a special you're offering to get folks who have NO web presence to go ahead and get this thing done once and for all AND get your own small business up and running.

4. Only catch--you gotta be paid half upfront and half when you come back. Some will say NO. Some will say what the heck... it's just 10 bucks. Trust me, there are people out there who give money to people they have never seen and have no way of knowing if they will ever see again, your job is to make sure their faith in humanity stays positive AND show up again, and with the goods as promised.

5. Get their details down in a notebook or a sheet of paper (better to go with a notebook but we're assuming you have NO money here, so you can actually get the paper from them). Get all the info you possibly can that will fit on one page... about them, some product/service info, contact info, etc. You can get free stock images off the web for them as well as create a simple NAME logo with free web tools. If they are really helpful, give them an email address they should send their logo to within at least the next one hour after you leave their shop/office--so that you can keep your word and be back with their site in 24 hours.

5. Take their 10 bucks. Get online at an internet cafe for a buck an hour. Google FREE web site builder or FREE web site, FREE hosting, or whatever the keywords are these days

6. Knock up a simple one page site with all the details you got.

7. Host it free on the web with one of those... theirname.ahostingcompany.com that doesn't show ads.

8. Email them the link.

9. Visit them the next day for your balance.

10. Repeat for 7 straight days or as much as you like.

If you can meet at least 5 business owners a day and close just one a day, you have $10 that day. Spend $1 online. $2 on an all you can eat buffet. Beg or squat with a friend/relative or find a shelter in the city for folks who need the helping hand. Depending on which country you're in, you can probably find some addresses online while you're building your site(s) for the day.

Save your $7 a day. At the end of a week, you could have $49 -- That will get you rent some nicer clothes or even get them cheap second hand. You may also be able to get some business cards made. By the second week you're a bigger fish than you were when you started... up your hunting ground, and up your price... $40 for a 3 page site. Same terms as earlier. By week 3 you can probably go as high as $100 for 5 pages, Week 4, a month after you started out with ZERO, you could be charging $150 - $200 for a 5 page site and even get monthly recurring services thrown in.

Now there will be a ton of sacrifices on your part to get this done. Like walking instead of taking the bus. Eating once a day. Sleeping outside/squatting with folks you don't know etc, if you absolutely have no other option.

But it can be done. I have done something pretty similar. Now, I'm charging $2,000 a site, and doing a whole lot more besides. Just went shopping for new electronics with the wife yesterday. Even she still marvels at how I eventually made it out of the sh#$ I was in. I was lucky, I had a roof, and where I was staying there was a computer.

But, I had NO internet access of my own so the computer was pretty much just a toy. I had to make my own way pretty much how I described above with some differences because of where I live etc.

I hit 60 businesses on foot in a week. Closed 12. Made $150. Then I met some clients who wanted other services. At least $200 in a week from those 2 clients in cash and in hard currency to boot. Then I moved further up from there with other projects. Sometimes things still seemed like crap and people still turned down offers but I don't give up that easily and I can tell you, not giving up pays.

I like these challenges. They are more fun than having everything SO easy with JVs and stuff you KNOW you don't really deserve. This way you get what you work for and can be proud of it. Whatever "IT" is.

Cheers,

Kunle

Good advice. Most of us still have the everyday perks of a roof, food, clothing, etc. and haven't really been pushed to the point of it's this or nothing. All this stuff requires is action and a little thinking outside the box.

Thanks. You're right, most folks won't try this plan unless they are absolutely pushed into it, sometimes the threat or reality of having nothing at all is what most folks need to get going. Personally, I never consider some techniques until they are absolutely the last resort.

Sometimes that "last resort" is what pushes some folks into what ends up being their own million dollar baby for life in which case you'll find it was the best thing to ever happen to you. Maybe this will be like that for someone out there.

Things are a little bit more expensive where I live but I do like your enthusiasm. I think that if you have that kind of drive, hustle, then you will surely succeed in anything you do, and it will no longer be about the "niche" or "market" but you create your own destiny.

    Best of luck.

I wrote up a few paragraphs about how this wasn't sustainable but I admired you work ethic. But then I saw you live in Africa; I have no idea what the economy is like over there but seems pretty cheap.

Great job and keep it up!

Yeah definitely cost of living where you are will be a determining factor in how you price this "cheapo one page site deals". And you're right about having the drive, and the hustle too, frankly it's one of the main differences between a lot of people who earn nothing, those who earn comfortably and those who earn in excess.

LOL. So you were going to tear me a new one but thanks for having a change of heart. Yeah as I said above where you live will determine your pricing strategy if you ever get this low on the ladder and need quick cash influxes.

But I'd be willing to bet this model will work in a lot more places than Africa where arguably standard and cost of living is relatively lower than in some other parts of the world, but that being said, there ARE parallels in prices of luxury items and even items for the middle class here in Nigeria and parts of Europe, the UK and the US. I've lived in eastern Europe and the UK and I could probably have made this system work just as well with a few tweaks in pricing and such.

In the UK, if you're homeless you can actually make some fast cash the same day and get a nice little flat to rent without much paperwork (at least that was possible back when I was living there a few years ago) so I won't say this is strictly for developing countries, I'm pretty sure it can work in more developed, more expensive places globally too.

      I stand to be corrected.

Just wondering, what currency is mostly used there?

      Hi Mav,

In Nigeria our currency is called the Naira depicted by the letter "N" or a crossed N similar to this.. "=N=" .

      And just FYI...

At the current rates of exchange 1 British Pound will get you about N250-N260 or so and 1 USD will fetch you about N160 or so. There's a constant fluctuation so better research needs to be done regarding the rates but those are ball park.

To give you a rough idea of prices for us over here...

N150 - N200 (about a buck) will buy you an hour of Internet access in one of many cafes in a city like the former capital of this country i.e. Lagos (prices may be higher or lower in other states depending on standard and cost of living).

At home or in office Wi-fi varies in cost depending on plans so you could need from as low as N500 (about 3 bucks) for about 150MB-300MB worth of downloads to about 60 bucks a month for unlimited web access/bandwidth etc.

Getting a house or flat to rent is not a straight forward or cheap process down here though, you have to pay a substantial amount of money upfront (usually for between 1-2 years or more in advance) and rent is billed annually, not monthly here, a good 2-3 bedroom in a middle class area would go for about 1,800 USD - N2,500 USD/annum and you usually gotta pay 2 years in advance plus other expenses so renting is about the same price in some other parts of the world like the UK, only difference is in the UK you can pay weekly or monthly as you earn, here, you got have the cash to splash or you're limited to cheapo housing or squatting and the like.

A brand new 2012 model Toyota RAV4 SUV will set you back about $34,000, a 2012 Toyota Land Cruiser SUV about $50,000, I'm guessing those are pretty close to the same prices in the US.

We get to enjoy gasoline (we call it petrol) pretty much dirt cheap though compared to the UK and US, we pay about 60 cents per litre of gas compared to about $3 or more in the US.

Other stuff like food, entertainment etc are pretty reasonably priced (if you earn good money and expensive if you're on a crappy salary or other income), so pretty much the same anywhere else I think.

Anyway this post was primarily to get folks thinking about how to get up and out of a mess quickly without locking themselves into thinking the only way out was to get high paying design jobs even when those seem inaccessible. You gotta start somewhere and the plan is to move up the ladder in pricing and income fairly quickly so you can eventually afford the finer things in life.

But, for someone in a really bad place they gotta start some place, so $20, maybe $50 per job (charged to those who possibly NEVER bother with owning web sites or paying more than that to own one) when you're down and almost out should get you going good--Hopefully.

      Cheers,

      Kunle

I wish rent was $1800 per year here. For a two to three bedroom house here you pay a little less than that per month.

Definitely a good last resort plan. Be resourceful and use whatever skills you have to make the quick money you need.

Yeah Im at about 1500 per month currently myself, and that is considered reasonable for four bedrooms, but I live in a rural area, and you can live much nicer here on 18k per year rent, than you could in say LA on 5 times that much.

I have made the mistake on WF several times of bragging that I live nice in a 260k home... and people are like ??????????

Lol... Then I realized that 260k in some places in California is almost slumville.

In Arkansas, its a nice upper middle class home.

I have seen houses online in LA for the same price that I wouldnt want my worst enemy to live in.

Some people who make 30k per month in other places don't live as well as we can here on 10k, so its easy to get complacent in Arkanses... At the same time 100k here is about the same amount of effort as 300k somewhere else because of the various economies in America.

If you live in LA a small business dropping 10k as a down payment is almost nothing. Here its a pretty big amount to ask for.

100k here is like 300k in some other places in the US.

Whats blowing me away though is that even 250k per year is completely unfathomable for some of these warriors who make that much per MONTH.

      Some even per WEEK!

On another note, not to go too far off topic Kunle... I have worked hard all my life with no silver spoon, and anything I have ever gotten has been through blood sweat and tears... I come from a very poor family where things like food and electric were questionable from day to day when I was growing up.

No one ever taught my Mom prosperity, and my Dad was just gone.... So if you ever hear me say something like "100k is Shit" again- Slap me. Im too spoiled.

Sure a person could do alot better , and I HAVE at times, through sheer determination and not even an education literally...making a statement like that is a true lack of gratitude for the opportunities I have enjoyed, and I sin against myself even saying it.

Im not happy when I dont live up to my full potential, but even 20% of the life I live today is more than I had growing up.

Making friends with Warriors who make that 4 times that much per MONTH though can make you feel very disatisfied with your performance, and we all SHOULD strive to max out our potential, those guys are an inspiration... I have been one of them, but not in awhile...

In all honesty, happiness is being surrounded by your children to me for the last few years and material gain means little unless you have someone special to share it with.

I guess for the last couple of years, even though for many years I have had a gun ho Tony Robbins kind of attitude, today Im more like "If it dont come easy, then let it go".... but then because of many years of struggling to develop as the best at what I do, some things come easily to me that many people are still striving for...and guess what?

As long as you keep your boat going straight, you will get to the other side!
