I'm Jumping Back Into The Game But...It's A Different Game

I'm actually going to share some info here that may help quite a few people and
at the same time ask a question of anybody who has actually gone through
with this business model.

The model is simple. I'll outline it below.

Step 1 - Think of a local business that could possibly want a web presence.
Try to pick something that is generic enough so that you could get quite a
few prospects but specific enough so that it appeals to just one group.

For example, dentists in Scotch Plains, NJ. I live in NJ and my dentist is in
Scotch Plains so that's why I picked him.

Step 2 Go to a domain registrar and get a domain that matches the
search.

For the above, I would look for something like dentistsinscotchplainsnj dot
com.

If it's available, purchase it.

Step 3 - Put up a one page site with a message that the page is for
rent.

Step 4 - Do some basic SEO. Since the keyword is so specific to one
location, you should rank high for it with no problem whenever somebody
goes to their search engine of choice and type in "Dentist in Scotch Plains,
NJ"

That's it. You can choose any figure you want for rental space. I'm going to
go with $300. I think that's fair.

Do that for 10 sites and get 10 people to rent the space (each person gets
their own page. Don't double rent) and that's $3,000 monthly. It's not a fortune
but it's not chicken scratch either.

Okay, here is my question for those who have already done this.

I know from my research that these domains rank high. I have checked a
ton of them. So it will be no problem to show a prospect that their rental
space is already ranking towards the top of the SERPs.

My question is this, for those who have done this. Do you need to actually
contact local businesses OR will they see these domains listed, see that they
are for rent, and contact you?

My gut tells me that this is going to turn into an on the phone telemarketing
job until I find a taker. That's what I don't want to do. I understand that
maybe not every domain will rent, but if this turns into more work than it's
worth (I'm still more or less retired) then it's just not worth my time.

As you can see, the few steps you need to do shouldn't take you more than
a couple of hours. After that, it's wait until the domain ranks and then rent
it out.

There are long term benefits to this that I won't get into here but I'm sure
you can figure out what they are.

But before I get into this (again, I know the domains will rank based on my
research) I need to know if this is going to turn into a telemarketing, or worse,
drive all over creation type of job.

I just don't want to travel down that road at 54 years of age and looking
forward to relaxing.

Any insight on this from those who have actually done this will be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It might just be me but I don't like to do work unless I've been paid for it first. Approach businesses that are already spending the most advertising (YP, print, tv , etc)

They already "get' that advertising works or is at least that it's needed (hey they spent $30K on YPs)...

Anyway - offer your services --> get paid ----> then do the work

Steven! Back in the saddle. :-)

    Here's my experience.

They don't see them, you or your minions have to contact them. It's typically a fairly easy sell if you can get the office manage to discuss with you and pass it to the Dentist (since you said dentists in particular, just a tip on dealing with them - their office manager is usually the decision maker).

Sidebar: sometimes the receptionist "plays" decision maker in a power struggle with the office manager, be ready for that to bypass them.

Now, my particulars, again going with dentists... They want to outrank their competitors, especially in a town where they all know each other. If the town is too big, they usually have the same competitiveness in an area of that city.

The power for a dentist in my experience is finding a way to bring in that new patient - it IS true that all businesses can benefit from that, but my dental clients have told me the lifetime value of a new patient is $9k.

I took over a site for one and put a silly "free x-rays" for new patients coupon - costs him $35 to process the x-rays. Laughs every time someone walks through the door with one, knowing he's staring at 9 Grand.

You may see fluctuation in your rankings as you change out the advertiser renting the site and Big G reindexes. I've seen well ranked sites get redesigned and plummet until google figures out they are actually more targeted.

The other item I feel worth mentioning is this - for the local searches I've been doing, the Google+ pack is hogging the whole first page. Most of the ACTUAL organic results (especially for competitive stuff with lots of results like dentists) don't show up until way, way down the page.

I point that out because what I hear is "hey, why is this guy number 1?" - he's actually the first G+ listing, NOT the number 1 result. The just don't "understand" the difference. The first one is the first one to them (even goes as far as when there's an ad above the G+ listings to think IT is #1!)

    Just some thoughts Steven.

    All success,

    Gary

    Steven,

    Good to see you back.

You are right. They will never see it. Took me forever because I thought I had to
see the dentist, himself. When I finally pitched an office manager, it got much
easier. Some heads are harder than others.

    Hi Steven,

I appreciate you sharing a legit business model.

Whoever does this is going to have to talk to people. Now I don't see why you couldn't do this entirely by phone/skype/webinar, but you are going to have to:

    a) do some marketing to get these sites and the opportunity in front of people

    b) qualify your prospects

    c) present and close those who show interest.

These steps need to be figured out in detail beforehand: it's not good enough to leap into the market with the cry of "I'm a Web Designer!" Nobody cares.

  • I'm interested in how one deals with the G+ listings in a given market? Or, is the trick to target businesses/keywords that tend to not give a G+ result?
