Google Places When Multiple Businesses at Same Location

For Google places pages, what's the current proper approach when multiple businesses have the same address for Google Places?

I'm trying to get the business to rank high in search results & not risk the page getting merged into one Places page for that address shared across multiple businesses.

Here's the story.

A current client is a major tenant in a large regional shopping mall. Every business in the mall uses the exact same street address. Gap, Macy's, Kohls, lots of other businesses big, medium, small.

SEO best practices say you MUST have a unique address in your google places listing. Having multiple businesses at the same address puts you at risk of being merged into a single listing.

Another tip is to absolutely NOT have any categories duplicated for the businesses having places pages that use the same address. That's unworkable because a mall has multiple restaurants, jewelry stores, etc.

Some businesses have their own websites, some do not. The ones that do show the address my client uses. There's no changing that.

I'd love to hear any stories, tips, techniques for when there absolutely has to be multiple businesses sharing the exact same address & how to rank better. Thanks in advance.

First, I'd advise you to stop buying/reading content from the same people you have been buying/reading up to now... Who says that "SEO best practice" is that you "MUST have a unique address"? This is more than ridiculous. It is true that the chances for businesses with same/similar addresses to merge are higher than for businesses with completely different addresses, but if this was a "best practice" then 99.9% of the businesses in the world should have rented an address at the countryside just to get a listing on Google

    Same goes for "categories duplicates".

The best advice is to make sure the NAP (name, address, phone number) of the business is as consistent as possible across the Internet, and that this business appears on as many of the most authoritative business directory websites as possible. This would make Google realize that this business is this business, and not another business located in the same mall. Thus, the chances for a merger would be much lower.

      Great reply above.

Also keep in mind that the website needs to be strong with a properly done contact page. Use schema formatting for business address. Use a kml file and upload a geo sitemap to webmaster tools.

I have ranked stores in malls without a problem, so i doubt you'll have an issue if you follow the best practices in this thread.

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated.

No the mall does not give suite numbers to the businesses. Weird, I know.

Probably for the best. Suite numbers just give google one more thing to mess up lol. I avoid them whenever possible.
