Reseller vs Shared Hosting for Clients

Should I setup a reseller account for my clients websites or just use a shared hosting account and give them each dedicated IP's?

It seems the shared option is much more profitable, so I'm thinking I must be missing something here. HG for example has a base reseller plan for $25 / month and not unlimited.

If I sign up with a business plan for $10 a month bandwidth, domains, space all unlimited.

Any thoughts here?

Thanks.

There is no such thing as unlimited space and bandwidth.

Reseller hosting IS shared hosting. The difference is you can create accounts, and set up clients with their own cpanel and stuff. Resellers are good for YOU to have, to set up your clients on so they're paying YOU for hosting instead of hostgator.

This exactly. Shared & reseller hosting are frequently also run in the same environments as shared hosting as well.

I'd recommend a reseller account though. There are a number of performance & security concerns with piling a bunch of addon domains onto a single shared hosting account.

EDIT: Stay away from any "top 10" list, as they are only the top paying "affiliates". You'll notice every single review site has the same companies listed, most of which are owned by EIG.

good idea if you provide each client with different account. if any problem in any account you just block that account.

Best example is virus attach on website.

I would also like to know this.

Can anyone suggest a good reseller that has out-of-the box turn key site for reselling hosting so i can just proceed to rebrand it?

Reseller accounts are great, you run the hosting, you charge the client.

I'm confused. How is it that I can get unlimited bandwidth and storage on my own shared hosting account, but cannot on the reseller accounts? Are the individual accounts you buy at Host Gator not really unlimited?

Are they just playing the odds in that some people are only going to use a tiny bit, while a small number of people are going to use a larger amount?

Because it's not unlimited to begin with.

      Yes.

so i could do the same thing as a reseller? I'm doing this for my local website clients at first, so their requirements for storage and bandwidth are small.

however, it is easy for them to understand unlimited vs 10gb storage and 100gb bandwidth for example. most don't even know what I'm talking about at that point.

A reseller account would be the correct way to go.

Then you should explain to them what the differences are. Saying it's "unlimited" is flat out lying, as there is no such thing.

so all the hosting companies out there are misleading all of us when they say their services are unlimited?

you are making an educated gamble offering unlimited service right? most clients are only going to require a small amount of space and bandwidth. you will eventually get one that takes up more, but should be offset by the majority of clients using less.

if you are giving them all they need/want isn't that unlimited?

    am i way off here?

Technically, yes. Disks & SANS have physical limits. The same goes for massively overselling. Bandwidth also costs money.

I wouldn't call it educated... When you hit the soft limits, where do you go from there? Read any unlimited web hosts terms of service, and you'll see that you're limited, in most cases limited even more than that of a host that clearly specifies package limitations.

if you are giving them all they need/want isn't that unlimited?
So If I needed 200GB of storage, do you think HG is going to let you upload that amount of data on some unlimited plan? No.

      am i way off here?
Sort of, but you have the concept of what's going on.

Typically web hosts offering plans with smaller specifications for higher prices will yield much better & secure environments.

Unlimited is a marketing term and nothing more. Why do you think people complain when they're forced to upgrade from some unlimited plan?

EDIT: Also, most of the time these people will experience suspensions and what not by using the slightest bit of resources because these servers a so jam packed that there's hardly any margin for spikes.

I've always had a reseller account and find it so much easier to manage things myself and give the few clients that want it, access to their account to create and check email themselves.

Besides that though - the number one reason you should use a reseller account, is because most hosts do NOT allow you to resell space from a personal account!

You mentioned Hostgator, so here it is from their TOS...

Shared accounts may not resell web hosting to other people, if you wish to resell hosting you must use a reseller account.
I'm sure there are some willing to risk their business to save a few dollars a month, but I'd advise playing by the rules and be sure to read the TOS from any service you're planning to use for your business.

Shared hosting will allow you to create different accounts, good for handling 2-3 clients at the same time while reseller hosting perform similar task but you.

One major problem with a shared account is that the client can not create his own email passwords. Therefore you must give them to him (which makes him rightfully feel unsecure), or you must give him your cpanel details!
