My First $5000+ Week (And How I Did It)

So here in Australia it's 10:40 PM on Friday night and I have had my first $5000 week of sales.

That's $5000 worth of deals closed from Monday to Friday. $5368 to be exact.

I am still kind of amazed at this new milestone in my business, but I am happy to share what I believe brought it on, in as much detail as possible...

One caveat off the bat though...

All these deals were offered last week, this week was 'follow-up-the-email-from-last-week', so it's not like I same-phone-call-closed any of these prospects (TIP # 1 : Followup, usually multiple followups, are required. Persistence is key!). Not that I don't believe it can't be done of course, it's just how I have been doing things so far.

The sales were 4 websites with hosting, totalling $3988 for web design + $1380 annually for hosting.

Just to give you guys a comparison, last month I did just under $5k total for the entire month. This month I am already at $7500 and it's only about halfway through.

I just want to bullet point the important things I learnt this month for those of you taking a similar path to myself (that is, selling web design and SEO services to local business) :

- First things first. EVERY SINGLE CLIENT was from cold calling. I cannot stress how critical this form of marketing has been for my business. You need to find the business owners who have some form of interest in buying a website. The next point covers how I targetted these clients...

- Look for the following :
  • Look through the Yellow Pages for ads that have 'admin@domainname.com' but DON'T list their website domain. This usually means they either A) Don't have a website yet, or B) Their website is so crap they don't want people to visit it. They are PRIME for the calling!
  • In addition to the above point, go LOCAL! Local is sooooo much easier (at least in my case, I know Iamnameless would say otherwise). For myself, I am closing like 3/4 appointments just because I can meet the client face to face. DO THIS!

So yeah, I have had much, much greater success in my calling from A) Going local and B) looking for hints that the business has a bad/lackluster online presence and might be interested in expanding.

I hope this post inspires others to hit the phones locally and get out there. I have done literally nothing else except call, and although I know I should look at doing more, at this stage in my business growth, it's perfect for controlling the amount of work I get and suits me.

Thanks to all the help from IamNameless especially, great guy to get some awesome info from!

Well done man, hopefully 5k weeks will become the norm for you from now on. As you say persistence is key and I couldn't agree more...

I got over my fear of cold calling by doing some research beforehand, basically narrowing down my target audience to businesses who could really use my help. Once I did that I found it easier to get appointments and once I get I'm pretty confident of getting the close.

It's all about getting your message across and educating your lead on the value of what you're selling i.e. Web Design = Better Conversions = More Leads = More Money

Once they can understand the process they are a lot easier to close - just my 2.0...

    Cold calling like a boss.

Question: are any of those payments upfront? As in, do you actually have some of that $5000 in your bank account?

    That is AWESOME.

I like that idea for prospecting. I did a little of this when I was doing my last round of cold calling looking for businesses that needed redesigns. I did talk to one lady who had got half way through the process with another designer, then the project had fizzled. The other designer had done all the photography and everything. I passed on trying to help her as my biggest bugbear is when clients lose interest halfway through, and you never end up getting your completion payment.

But this has given me new enthusiasm for this method. Hopefully I'll be posting about my first $5000 week soon. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Keyword is residual.

Awesome matey. Its still difficult to close deals for web design at £77 ($110) let alone the amounts you are talking about!

    Very well done.

All the best in the future too.

Regarding questions about payment : All our jobs require 50% upfront before work begins. A couple of these deals were closed Friday, so the deposits won't be received until next week, since we usually only do bank transfer.

I understand that people can pull out at the last minute and that's only happened a couple of times out of 20 or so clients, so it doesn't worry me, plus I have about 5 more hot leads to call Monday that will make up for any losses.

The real breakthrough this week was the realisation that going after the TYPE of leads I have has increased my interest rate from 1 in 100 to 1 in 10. It really is that high.

      To re-iterate :

      1. Go for local businesses that you can meet face to face.
      2. Go for businesses that have registered a domain but don't have a website/don't list their website alongside their email address.
      3. Go for businesses that have a poor looking website.

Those factors have boosted my results dramatically.

I think someone asked how many calls this took.

To give a comparison, in the last week, I did about 150 calls to random businesses that weren't local and got 1 new client.

I also did about 30 calls to LOCAL businesses that had DOMAIN NAME EMAILS WITH NO/BAD WEBSITES and got 3 clients from that. So from 1% to 10% on average.

Uuuh, Sorry but I don't understand this phrase:
    • Look through the Yellow Pages for ads that have 'admin@domainname.com' but DON'T list their website domain

So..correct me if i' am wrong, they do list their domain because it is in the email address.

Appreciate if someone clears this to me.

    Thx!

What I mean is, say a business is called Joes Plumbing. He has an ad with JUST his email address, which reads info@joesplumbing.com, but he doesn't list his website.

This usually means he didn't want to draw attention to the website when he setup the design of the ad, probably because he wants to change it or isn't happy with it.

Question 1. See my signature, I explain in detail how I prospect.

      Question 2. Website design.

Question 3. In the past yes, depends on what client wants.

Yes, I believe so. Prospecting is prospecting. Just find clients with crappy/badly optimized sites and call and ask.

Well, I mostly focus on mobile apps. It's much harder to prospect, but the market is bigger, and the revenues, too. I just have to find a good way to prospect the clients who doesn't have apps, and are open to have one...

Very good job. I am thinking of jumping into offline marketing arena after a long time in the affiliate marketing game. I see there is a lot of money to be made here than through traditional affiliate marketing. However, I am skeptical about getting my first few clients.

Any tips from seasoned veterans on how should I start out? I have good knowledge of SEO and can take on SEO work or video creation, content development or web design work.
