Urgent help needed for prospective client

So I have a prospective client who's hobby involves scanning and uploading images of a charity related item (don't want to be too specific for obvious reasons) to basically serve as a directory for the charities to look at to find out more information about this particular item. (model, manufacture date etc).

She has a current site but it's been down for a while, and she has zero computer knowledge. After a lot of confusion I finally figured out she uses 'fetch ftp' to upload the images/descriptions and Clarisworks? Which I have no clue about in any way.

She has around 10,000 images already uploaded with info etc and basically just wants the website transferred and updated. I was hoping to transfer it to wordpress - is this possible?

The problem is she literally knows nothing, so it's extremely hard to figure out exactly what's going on.

I'm pretty sure she has no access to the hosting. She says she can burn all the images and info to disk and send them over to me..is there a way to mass upload all that information to wordpress? It only needs to be a simple A-Z directory site with the charities names listed then the items listed from there. And a search bar - which is obviously built in anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all? I'm completely at a loss.

Or even anyone who would be able to help out/have experience on a project like this? Possible outsourcers?

She's makes no profit from this, she's house bound and it's her hobby so would like to get it running again. I genuinely want to help her but I've resisted commiting to the project so far because I can see me ending up uploading the 10,000 images and descriptions one by one

Thanks in advance warriors.

Oh it can definitely be done. Just depends on the current structure of the site. If it's a static site you don't really need access to the hosting to get everything. It helps but it's not a deal breaker. Generally what I do is use something like the next gen plugin. You just put the images in a folder and it puts them all into a portfolio for you. As far getting the site down I use HTTrack. HTTrack Website Copier - Free Software Offline Browser (GNU GPL) It's free and has never failed me yet. I've run into this problem so many times over the years. That's the approach I would take without even thinking twice about it.

Thanks for your input, both look like great tools. Although, I don't think the website copier can help in this situation as the site is no longer online.

The next gen plugin looks interesting although I'm not sure what it's capabilities are.

What I need is a way of creating an A-Z directory site. With pages for each charity from A-Z. Then each charity page will have the various products on.

I could simply set up wordpress as normal, have 'Charities' as the parent page then the various charities as children pages with a gallery plugin on each page with the products on.

Would the next gen plugin work in this instance? In your experience with the next gen plugin would it be simple for someone with little IT knowledge to upload new images and descriptions? She needs to be able to upload them herself.

Is this the best way to go about it? Or have I missed something obvious?

I refuse to be a product of circumstance. I am a product of my decisions.

I've had clients that could barely turn on a computer and be able to use next gen once I walked them through it. That site is still online. You just have to know where to look. Internet Archive: Wayback Machine

Go there and search for the old address. It will likely come up and you can scrape it from there.
