Hi there to all Members,

I would like to point out a New unique way of doing High Quality Offline Marketing.

Its called DIGITAL SIGNAGE and its in mine opinion the BOMB to all members looking to do some Major Local Offline Marketing.

Steps You need to do:

1) You need to rent a Retail Shop with a Big Glass window on a good Location
where many people are passing during the day.
2) Purchase a Rear Projection Film and a Projector.
3) Apply the RP Film to the Glass and activate the Projector
4) Create some Animated Video ADS and watch the crowd go WOW
5) And most important sell 15 - 30 sec. AD space to Interested Customers to cover all Costs

The End result of this 21 Century Offline Marketing Strategy is looking something Like This...

  • I like this idea. Must apply at my place where there's so many big windows
  • Wow, what a great idea! But it would take some preps though... Thanks for sharing this!
  • would be interested to know what advertising rates you could charge businesses?
  • I done some research :

This type of advertising is in HIGH DEMAND !!

Working Hours of a Screen is from 7AM to 01 AM !
( The Projector can be set up to turn ON and to switch OFF Automatically )
So its 18 Working hours per day on MAX 40 customers everyone has a 15 sec Video AD..
( If they don't have charge the creation of an AD $ 100 -200 and use After Effects to make them easy )

So You offer them : You ADS will be shown 108 times every day.

    The Average Price per Clip is $ 0.25 x 108 = $ 27 per day x 30 Days = $ 810

    Discounts:
    3 Months 10 % off
    6 Months 20 % off
    12 Months 30 % off

Round up Your starting price to $ 800 + Vat
If the location is RIGHT you will have customers calling You day & Night...Trust me !!

The MIN this display can make You per Year if all Spots are sold out is $ 268.800

Yes there are some costs to rent the Retail shop, maintain the projector, change projector lamps etc but in the worst case after paying all bills you will end up with a MIN of $ 200.000 per Year !

If You need options how to sell fast then just use sites like Groupon.com and offer it there.

Trust me 40 AD spots will be sold out in minutes !!

Just remember in that case raise Your price 100% and offer it there as a 50% discount ending up charging the same amount i wrote above.

Or do it locally if You prefer to pay no % to Groupon.com

In my opinion this is a very lucrative business.

Easy to set up ( $ 5000 - 10.000 starting capital - Depending on the Quality on the Rear Projection Film )
Easy to manage and Highly attractive even to the owner who can advertise his own products and websites there for FREE.

    TIP:
You can double up You income by renting a Retail store with 2 BIG GLASS WINDOWS left and right and the entrance in the Middle.

In that case You would have 80 ( 15 sec.) ADVERTISING spaces

BTW...If anyone has a good location in the States HIT ME UP...Lets get down to Business !!
I am Interested to set up some screens there ( New York, Miami, Vegas, Washington ).

    Cheers...

  • This would be a great way to partner with some local business in NYC (i reside in Queens) to use there window space and provide them with some easy cash. I will bookmark this as I like the idea.

    • That is an option as well...

Find the best Location in town and offer them a Deal !

      Here is another Video

  • What I want to do is rent a white billboard then use a waterproof projector to point at it. Like a normal billboard on the side of a highway. I'm sure you can fasten it to the ground somehow so noone steals it.

I guess the issue with that would be not having sound. Or the fact that noone driving by would hear it if you did. You might not even need sound though considering how novel it would be. I've seen billboards in AC with flashing lights but none with moving images.

    • I think the main purpose of a Rear Projection Solution in Malls and in other crowded places is to bring the AD closer to the walking consumer because the response rate of those who walk by is much better then the response rate of those who drive by.

Anyway...Setting up an OUTDOOR SCREEN like You wrote is possible but not using the Rear Projection Film technology because it makes no sense at all You would need 30000 LUMEN-s to do this. And those Projectors cost about $ 500.000 if they exists at all.

For Your purpose I would suggest to go OLD SCHOOL using a LED DISPLAY that can be bought in pieces of 1 square meter and then they are put together forming an image as big as You pocket can afford.

For this purpose I would suggest a P20 Led Display

Starting Prices are about 3000 Euro
More info can be found here :
LED Screens Specialists, Digital Billboards Manufacturers, Recognized LED Billboards Authority
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I like this idea.
I thought about it walking through the mall yesterday with my wife.
I told her about the idea and she liked it too.

Now I just have to find a good window.
Almost all of the idea spots were taken, so if someone sees a prime piece of mall real estae, jump on it.,I am on a list to be called if one of my prime spaces open up.

Those numbers don't work for me. My signage would run from 9am-11pm Mon-Sat. and then from 10am-6pm on Sundays...(these are the mall hours)

With 40 ad spots at 30 seconds each, each ad would display 3 times an hour or 36 times a day and 24 times a day on Sundays. 240 ad displays per week per 30 second spot.

I think my spots will be $500/month for 30 secs and $300/month for 15 secs.
Making it $0.48 per ad run, or around $17/day per 30 sec spot.

All 30 sec spots would still be around $20k per month gross.
  • What ever style You chose there is some easy money in this Area.

    Nice Price List BTW...

That way it will be more affordable to the small business owner
( Like Pizza Delivery,Car wash, and all kind of local shops you name it )

    GO FOR IT !!

    And keep walking
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Something I am considering, is partnering with an existing store.
I would run their ad for free in exchange for allowing me to use one of their windows.

    Thanks for sharing Walter!

    A question for you...
Could you provide a link to exactly what you think equipment would be needed?
I saw the link in one of the previous posts, but I have no idea what I am looking fro.
You seem pretty knowledgable about the equipment.

Its a LED project and the screen that goes on the glass?

  • Quick suggestion to people doing this.

Partner up with malls you can put this in one or more stores waiting to be rented. Revenue share with them (60% them, 40% you)
    -They cover the electricity
-You get the ads (they can help by putting it out in their newsletter for tenants)
    -You supply the equiptment

Other places you can do a revenue split
    - Car lots (no revenue split, 50% off ads are theirs, 50% you sell(no compete of course)
    - Big box retailers (same deal as malls, corp may not allow it)
    - Video Stores (Let them rent your equiptment to play their in store ads or do similar to car lot)
    - Resturants (also consider smaller screens in the waiting area playing the same)
    - Billboards (some companies are already doing this but rent the billboard, install the system and sell the ads)
    - Bars
    - Colleges/ Schools
    -Tourist attractions
    -Events
-Craft/Vendor shows (booth or outside the box thinking like side of a Van parked in a heavy traffic area)

Alternative ways to make this work
-Project onto a wall (will work best at night)
-Back of Semi Trucks (Not sure of the legality but the backs and maybe the sides would work great)
    -Buses (same idea)
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • Some shop owner near by my home already implementing this strategy but in alittle different way

    • I found SSIDisplays.com for rear projection film and window speakers. Should cost around $2,500. It is anti-glare about 9' x 10' in size plus 4 speakers (one for each croner)
Still looking for info on how to actually project the ads...

      Care to share?
  • Very interesting. It seems like a big investment, though, potentially.
  • thanks for sharing a unique idea.

hope this will help to attract clients.
  • Great idea. Very creative thinking.
  • WalterWhite,

Would this projector do the trick?

    Acer X1161P 3D-Ready DLP Projector
  • OK Folks I see You have many Questions:

First of all let me say that the 3M™ Vikuiti™ Rear Projection Film is the best option you can get on the Market today ( and the most expensive one ) Prices can be found here Vikuiti Rear Projection Film-Shop 3M

2 place and a very good alternative in my opinion is this Company from Germany
projection-film DIGILINE-contrast - discount shopping at online shop

The have a very nice offer there : A RPF DigiLine Contrast 120 cm x 5 Meters for $ 1699
( German Quality cant be bad...5 Years Warranty included )

And another GREAT option is the PRODISPALY screens ( BTW They installed the one screen in that mall in UK shown in the Video above - LIMITED SPACE )
Rear Projection Film & Rear Projection Screens | Pro Display

Other companies I would not suggest because any other Rear Projection Film on the Market looks washed out in my opinion...

This three products above are doing their Job BIG STYLE ( without any Projector HOT SPOTS ) producing PLASMA image quality and are standard in this industry !

Just pick one that suits your budget the best...

    Regarding the Projectors:
Any Rear Projection Film is producing best image Quality paired with VERY BRIGHT Projectors - 4000 Ansi Lumens Min. ( Ansi Lumens = Brightness of the Projector )

I would suggest you pick one from here that suits your Budget the best :
4000 Lumen Projector - Multimedia Projectors - Compare Prices, Reviews and Buy at Nextag

    Regarding the ADS Creation :

For a begginer I would suggest to use http://Animoto.com - They offer some nice prepared templates to chose from to get You up and running in HIGH QUALITY !

But FOR BEST results and a Totally PRO look I can suggest the Adobe After Effects software paired with this Stock Media Source from RevoStock who provide Professional looking Stock Video ADS for BIG MEDIA COMPANIES WORLDWIDE
( You just change the Text,Images or Video in your chosen Clip using After Effects and export the Project from the Program to desktop and that's it )
Here are the stock Videos :

If You have any more questions I am more than happy to Help out

    Cheers !

  • What about speakers Walter?

I saw SSI, the company I mentioned a few posts above, is selling small speakers that get attached to the glass and help turn the glass into a giant speaker, or something like that.

Thanks for the links. My wife and I want to get started on this.

    • This looks like a very solid idea, expensive to set up but the return is amazing if you can sell the ad spots.

Might be worth approaching businesses first to see if there's any interest before shelling out on the equipment.
  • Very nice and original idea.
  • We own a digital signage consulting practice that did around $1,000,000 in sales last year. It's a total pain in the butt, and you're essentially a cable puller/hardware installer. Unless you're working with architects who are building new facilities, it's extremely difficult to get signage in place. We have some VERY large clients for signage (major corporations) and we even did all the signage media for the Cleveland Cavs at the arena in Cleveland. I know a little bit about this market, and the major corporate clients are moving away from it at light speed. Kroger's has a massive DS network that is largely dark right now simply because the ROI isn't there.

  • Looks good, I have seen similar types done with TV's within gas stations, drug stores ect with ads. around a news channel?
  • Gets you thinking...Even if it only worked for a couple months you would still make a killing...
  • fascinating marketing tool! Love it!
    • [1] reply
    • Really nice concept. I actually know of a couple people doing this. It is quite a bit of work, and expect to spend a nit more than you have in mind, but both have surpassed their investment.

I too believe that creative ways of getting the most out of advertisement is really going to be the "it" for 2013. Like others, I hope to use my research to explore ventures in this area. Excellent, this almost sounds like the dotcom momentum is coming about.
  • Hi there folks,

Yes it still blows my Mind away after i see the numbers.

And don't think this is a BIG INVESTMENT because You can start for as Little as $ 2000.

The Quality of the PICTURE will not be PERFECT but you can change it with a More Quality RPF after you cash in on some Advertisers !

And Yes ALECK44...Local Marketing is the Next Thing out there !

Trust me...More and More Locals are realizing the POWER of it.

They start to buy all kind of stuff Mobile Apps,Websites and Much more...

While the scammers offer them a truly cat in the bag for thousands of $$ ( they let them think a website is enough to gain customers etc )...Its very easy to tell them the real story and to present Your screen !

Explain them YOU WILL BE EXPOSED to all this passing people !!

They will beg for a SPOT on that screen !

Especially today where marketing is done only for the BIG ones and they are charging $$$$$$ !!

A small company can not afford that kind of Advertising anymore...neither Google AdWords because google is going crazy with those numbers per click !
So offer them like someone wrote above a $500 for a Month deal and watch the cash flow in !

Day after day & Month after Month..

The only thing You will be busy doing is counting the stash and looking for new locations to install new screens !
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • After some research here in the UK i found several companies already offering this service for as little as £40 per month not the hundreds some people are claiming can be made.

I was very interested in this and contacted some bizs that have used this form of advertising for many months - some over a year and they said they did not notice any disernable increase in calls because of the adverts/videos. Shame, thought this might be a winner.
  • Walter,

    "Awesome" idea!

I looked into something like this a few years ago, but I want to have it inside a cargo type van.

I wanted to it have driven around town, and play the ads, I know there are companies here in the US and Canada that do the mobile advertising, but I was looking for more of a cost effective solution.

Your idea, is right on target!

    Great Stuff!

    Bill
    • [1] reply
    • I don't know how he markets, but I know a guy who's done the van type. He stopped trying, couldn't get enough people to pay enough money to make it worth the while. He lost money. It seems, adding the screens make the van so heavy that gas expenses are quite high.

If you're a better marketer, make sure you know how much more gas you're going to spend and how you show ROI to your clients and prospects. How do you track? If your clients don't track accurately, you lose.

      • [1] reply
  • wow...this is awesome idea...I guess when mall has some empty stores,,,they would rent it out for reasonable money, since you don't really do anything in there...thanks
  • @ Walter: How do you see this getting startd for $2,000?
I saw the projectors were $2k and then the film was $2k, then you have to rent a spot.

@ Zimbizee: So re-examine pricing. Even 40 people a month at $97 is just under $4k per month.
So, after expenses... you will still be at $2k per month net after month 1!
Then, re-invest. I know 5 malls I can put this in. Just within the metro area.
More if I want to travel over 30 mins to a mall.
  • Folks You are not getting the Right Pic here !!

If the Screen is on a good location the price can be MIN $500 per Month !!
If the Screen Location is TOP the Price can be even Higher !

You are thinking to much about some people who FAIL in the Offline Advertising Industry !!

Someone told You that this is not worth the Investment because they tried it or they know someone who did it with a 20" Screen in a Baseman location ?!

Cmon Folks...Those who talk they did not see any customers from this type of advertising should make better animated ads ! In most cases people are still loyal to static images even in Video Advertising !

Regarding the costs of running this Business :
This simply does not require any attention at or comments at all !

If someone is having trouble paying for RENT and for THE COMPANY MONTHLY BILLS then his SCREEN is definitely in the Wrong Location.

    P.S.

A start up is possible with $ 2000 ! I found some cheap RPF on Amazon and you can fill up a whole big Store window with $ 500 and get a decent projector for $ 1500...I was only talking about the equipment cost needed when i mentioned the 2k budget! Not the First Rent...

The rent and Location is up to You!

Anyway...It can be done... Period !
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Awesome idea, though I think the shop rent would blow it out here.

In my town (regional Australia, pop. 80,000) the smallest shop in one of our shoping centres costs $13,000 a month rent for a 3x3 lease. I can only imagine that would go up a lot for a short term lease.

In a large regional/city shopping centre $300-500k rents are not uncommon for small to average sized shops.
  • Thanks for your helpful tips.
  • Great idea! Keep us posted once it's setup.
    • [1] reply
    • It's been nearly two months since the last post, but I still like the idea in this thread.
I too did some research, and found that the base concept and execution, though not new in digital signage circles,
      are unique none the less.
So noobie or not, here are my thoughts.

To begin, let's imagine replacing the RPF on transparent substrate and projector combo with a 24" or 40 " (or 100") monitor.
Next, if the projector is processing data from a laptop, then let's also imagine replacing the laptop with an internet connected mini ITX PC - half the price of a laptop - fed by a $5 - $15 flash/thumb drive programmed with the loop (rotational) data ... see where I'm going with this ?
We'll end up with a system similar in function, to that used by marketers who set up display screens for local businesses etc, e.g. restaurant / coffee shops display, menu and pricing, college campus info, chiropractors, spas, sports, photo galleries ..... all of which info can be edited by the marketer from his home PC !!

Finally I should say, that for me, the eye candy for the gawkers is the RPF on large store window (showcase) w/projector combo, but I would probably look more closely at how I "feed" the rotational data to the projector.
      • [1] reply
  • Like it, we have a very large shopping centre near me, bigger than blue water, could work well there.
  • I don't know if this would necessarily work because of the possible reduced footfall of a town-centre location (not so many big malls here in the UK), but you could set up in an empty shop and have your ads run throughout the day and evening. This could allow you to target your ads a bit more - more frequent showings for shops and cafes in the day, restaurants before lunch and dinner (possibly with mention of lunch/dinner on the ad) and then as it gets later run ads for bars and clubs, giving you more paid ad time overall and probably lower rent than in a shopping centre!
  • Great Idea. People are so dialed into video they are already preconditioned to check it out I could also see this working at festivals and street fairs that we have throughout the summer months.
    • [1] reply
    • @ GuyR
It appears that smart advertising companies have already worked around
the rent issue with which you seem to be preoccupied. They are being paid for "showcasing" their signs
on the windows of established, reputable businesses like Savills in Nottingham.

      @ Look2live
Why only summer months ?? Don't seasonalize digital marketing. It can be a perennial business.
The theme/focus of the video displays can change in a snap.
Take a look at this BMO (Bank of Montreal) mural. A concept of combining static with dynamic signage,
in support of their "local" soccer football team.

Let's apply the BMO's hybrid concept to large stores (like Macy's in the USA, or Harrod's in the UK) at Christmas time.
I can visualize a large 20ft x 30ft static image of Santa, while within his bag (or his sleigh) space, is the animated/dynamic part
of the project, with video displays of gift item options available in the store (like the BMO guy's drum).
My point - sometimes you may need only one store to launch a project.

Just using YouTube to "illustrate" my point. Not sure what links are allowed here (lol)
      Cheers !!

  • Quite impressive! I really like the idea.

    Keep it up
  • yes it is a good idea, they has a lot like this in my place..
  • Brilliant marketing. I've seen the mobile ad trucks driving around but go to the busy street corner or mall setting and squat there. Thanks for sharing!
  • Walter,
I did some research on rear projection film and was very impressed with the video effects.
I didn't think the film would be able to convey as much light and clear animation on the retail business glass windows it was presented on. Wow! The effects were quite dazzling and really got my attention. Thanks for the great tech innovation tip!
  • This is pretty cool...

I dont think you ccould do this on a budget, unless you have the skills and are owed a few favours... but anything is possible.
    • [1] reply
    • This would be a great way for me to advertise my fantasy portrait studio. Can anyone tell me if the RP film can be removed from one window and used over again and again?
      • [1] reply
  • I really like this idea, I don't think the rent is the issue at all. It all comes down to selling the advertising spots. If you could sell out all the advertising spots then the rent won't matter.

I like the idea of running a Groupon offer on it too but I think you would have to raise the price significantly as I remember reading that Groupon take a large percentage of any successful sale.
  • Just think of all the glass available for advertising after hours in banks, shops, offices that are in retail areas/mixed use that still get tons of traffic. You could place these easy with those businesses with a revenue share with the location from local ads from other nearby businesses.
  • Yes you are Wright,In an era of digital age, besides formal display advertisements, digital sign age has become one of the most attractive forms of advertisement. Here I suggest a website link having large number of digital displays,With digital display signs, interactive components can be instilled and further displayed through LED/LCD screens. Digital signage is also often known as Narrowcast networks.

    adsystemsled.com/gallery.html

Outdoor digital displays can get all the eyes for your brand but the condition is that the message needs to be crafted very carefully.Digital systems are all around us; they tell us about flight schedules and arrivals at airports while in industries, they are used to convey messages to workers.
  • Be sure to check local signage laws. In my town, Outdoor advertising can't move that fast, it has to stay on a still image for like 6 seconds.
  • Thanx for sharing WalterWhite
I will definitely try this way
  • I've thought of hiring advertising space on smaller billboards in high traffic areas. The idea you present here is a step and a half above that!!! Thanks for sharing!
