How did you pick your Tagline?

I have recently registered my business name and before I get my logo designed I want to come up with a decent Tagline to accompany it.

I would love to know what process some of you went through to come up with your Tagline.

Did you go serious, witty, catchy, humerous, etc...

Thanks for your thoughts

who is your target market, as in will you be aiming for mum and dad /family businesses, bigger CEO run business etc , then aim your tagline accordingly, or better still, dont put it on your logo, then you can have multiple taglines to suit segments of your market ;-)

A tagline can be an extremely powerful part of your marketing and your image. Think about the big companies such as Mcdonalds, Walmart, Pepsi and others. They create a tagline for themselves that evokes a sense of the feeling that they want you to feel about their company. Often, just hearing the tagline will make you think of that company.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is: think of how you want your customers to feel about your business/company/products and create a tagline that plays to that. The key here is that you're dealing with emotions. You want a tagline that evokes emotions

Thanks Bob, I will take a look for that book and give it a read...

Between this and my biz plan thread I have a couple of books to get through...woot woot...knowledge.

Thanks Nathan but I believe that is already taken...I would also like to avoid bringing that discussion into this thread as I had enough of it in the original thread it was in.

Hi Nathan, no worries...I just know how much grief is going on in that OP's thread.

There is nothing wrong with cheesy...if it works for you.

I haven't even come up with cheesy yet...I think my big take away is that I really need to drill down what my business is and who I want to market to.

I am not going to let not having a tagline hold me up...it's just something that I would like to have.

If a prospect or lead reads your "business name" and "tagline", and still does NOT know what type of business you are in........ You have failed in properly naming your business/tagline.

until you reach branding heights, you have to go with face... Direct to the point.

I want prospects to know EXACTLY what my business is.... Through name, tagline, logo, and marketing materials. I currently have a few taglines, but honestly it's not THAT big of a deal..... Your right, don't spend to much time on it, the "tagline" may come to you when you least expect it.

  • Couple of thoughts on taglines.
    Short an powerful
    Longer and explains.
The whole picture is worth a thousand words, well your words can be a pinpoint picture.
Our company is "Intentional Marketing" "Marketing with Purpose" good bad or indifferent, it says what we are about. Everything we do is intentional, with focus, and on point.
    Wordsmithing is always fun.
    Good luck.

When choosing the right tagline for a business I will normally try to think of the solution to their problems, and just a pinch of sarcasm. Combine the two, but make it witty so that your company is hard to forget.

There is a simple solution to that. First create the vision of your company as well as the mission.

Based on the information you've written in both; come up with a common theme that you find is present in both.

That would be the gist of your company. Now relate that to your target market and choose three main keywords that would best represent the theme.

    For e.g:

Common theme: Online branding and marketing
    Target Market: Small/Medium Businesses
    Potential Tagline:
    a. Jumpstart Your Business Online Today
    b. Put your Business in the spotlights

I hope you got the idea.. hope it helps

The aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous. The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him and sells itself.....
