WOW! $2,250 in 1 DAY! by a "sales-newbie"

Excuse my excitement BUT....I just have to "unload" about what just happened.

Today is Tureday, Oct 2, 2012. On Sunday, one of our church friends (Matt) came to me after service and told me he was about to have his home foreclosed UNLESS he can come up with $2,000 by this coming Friday. His company shut down their local plant and he's be unable to find anything other than part-time things the past 2 yrs.

Well....I went thru my List of Money-Makers and looked for;

1) Something that almost anyone can "sell"l
2) Something that does NOT require "Sales Experience" or "Sales Talent"
3) Something that potential customers WANT and are willing to pay for IMMEDIATELY!
4) Something that's less than $200 per sale and...has the potential of 30 or 40 sales in a short period of time.

So....I asked Matt to come home with us and I showed him my "FRIDGE MAGNET TOWN DIRECTORIES".

These are Fridge Magnets with 2 columns of business listings. Each biz listing gets 2 lines. I found I can fit 40 Listings on these.

And...I believed I could ask and get $150 for each listing (I learned long ago that ANY biz owner can "make an instant decision to spend $150 provided the program or product HALFWAY has a chance to do what the sales person says it will do")

So...I asked Matt to come over on Monday morn (yesterday) and I'd give him some "Training".

Well...Matt is on my doorstep at 8am sharp. Matt has NEVER sold anything in his life. He's always "worked with his hands" not his "mouth".

So...I explained some of what I've done with "Face-To-Face" selling and how I "built up my confidence" (Hey! I have something that can HELP biz owners! So they SHOULD pay attention to ME and...write me a check...RIGHT NOW!)

And...the MORE I believed that, the MORE confident I got.

So...I got Matt "worked-up" to where he started to BELIEVE he could HELP biz owners with this program.

I explained the features of the Fridge Magnet and the "built-in" PSYCHOLOGICAL POWER it has when potential customers understand how it can benefit them AND...why they should GET A SPOT NOW...and write a check for $150!

So...we went over his "presentation" and the "IMMEDIENCY" of "getting it NOW"! No, "Thinking It Over!" Write a check RIGHT NOW or...Lose your Spot on the magnet!

I told Matt to meet me this morn at 8am and we'd go over it again then, we'd "Hit The Bricks". I'd tag along and NOT say anything...just observe. And, we'd discuss each call afterwards.

I decided to go to a small town south of me (pop 3,500) Hey! All I'm looking for is 20 sales...then he can go to another town.

Well...the 1st few calls were sort of "rough" and he could see where he could improve with each call. NOTE: With any new program it takes me 3 to 4 calls to "get the Lingo" down pat and "pick up some cliches" that "feel right"...to me....and to which my prospects reacted to, positively!

So....bang-bang-bang...down the street we went. Then...on his 5th call, A SALE! Holy Camoly! The guy nearly jumps out of his skin. We get outside and the guy gives me one of the tightest Bear-Hugs I've ever had. Then he starts jumping and running all over the parking lot.

It's GREAT to see people get THAT excited!

So...he gets a few more sales and time to break for lunch. After lunch I surprise him with..."I'm NOT going along with you! You are ON YOUR OWN! I think you can handle it so...come by after 5 and let me see what you've done.

So...Matt came by at 4:30 and showed my his 15 checks. $2,250 and he has 25 more sales to go...which he has TOTAL CONFIDENCE in getting.

So...I am POSITIVE that, by Friday Matt will have sold all 40 spots for a whopping (40 x $150 = $6,000) which will take some of the pressure off.

Thanks for reading,
I'll let you know how Matt does.

Sounds great, just wondering over a few little details like, who is getting these fridge magnets, how will they be distributed, what size are they and one more, are these just a listing like:

      Joe the Plumber
      345-987-6543

or does something more fit on those 2 lines?

      Thanks in advance,

      Eva

Well, it seems like the OP id not that interested in filling in the details so let's get to work here and see what we can come up with.

          Here's my questions again:

          1. Who is getting these fridge magnets,
          2. How will they be distributed,
          3. What size are they,
          4. Are these just a listing like:

          Joe the Plumber
          345-987-6543

or does something more fit on those 2 lines?

          And here's another one:

          5. How many magnets is he printing?

Here's my suggestive answers to my own questions, feel free to chime in with your own possible solutions.

          1. Distribution could a) be by mail and they could be mailed to a select list of new homeowners which you would need a list for (try infoseek or any other list seller), this would be the most expensive option. In this case, I do not think that is the way he is doing it since it is such a small town and there would not be enough new home owners to mail to.
          b) The magnets could also be divided up amongst the advertisers that would then give them to their own customers. This would be an option I would consider myself.
          c) They could also be given out at a local town event which was mentioned in another thread. If I remember correctly, they had printed 1,000 and were gone in an hour, people begging for one. So if an event is about to happen, this would be a viable option as well.

That kind of took care of both 1. and 2.

          3. I would guess the size is a 5"x7".
          4. Typing it out would show you what fits.
          5. How many to print? If the size of the town is 3,500, figuring there are 2.2 people per household, printing 1,500 magnets should be just about right or slightly under complete coverage. Printing just 1,000 would probably be ok too.

40 advertisers, each giving out 25 magnets and asking each customer if they had a magnet or not, would make giving out 1,000 magnets, totally doable.

I like this idea but only give magnets to each buyer/customer as they use a service or buy something from the participating business. It seems the easiest of all plus you are only giving them to people that actually buy something.

Also, what you make per business should depend on how many magnets are distributed, right?
If 40 businesses and only 1500 magnets, then only 37 or 38 magnets per business? Does that seem like enough? And what is the cost of these magnets?

Okay, if Don does not want to give us details then it should be looked at similar to 9x12 card system. Give businesses enough value but allow us to make enough money.

The value is in the magnets staying on people's refrigerator for a long time. Something that comes in the mail is either kept in a drawer, put on the fridge or tossed out.

Figure about $1 per magnet, give or take depending on size,

        Wow!!!

Newbie sales rep starts calling prospects at 7:30am... BRILLIANT!

Approximately an hour later, said newbie sales rep closes "7" sales.

That averages "1" sale every 8.5 minutes. That means, no: VMs, DISCs, NAs, NIs, HUs or WNs. He is rolling and that my friends is BRILLIANT!

Said newbie takes a break and walks outside. While doing so, he catches a prospect and sells said prospect right on the spot. How cool is that? BRILLIANT!

Said newbie gets back on the phone and the MAGIC continues....

At the end of the day, said newbie closed a total of 25 sales... BRILLIANT!

        What a story, eh?

This is definitely a solid "action taking" idea that truly just says, hey, screw the "fear" of selling and focuses on how you can really HELP a business increase their profits through a very simple, low cost marketing effort.

When you help with a good heart, you receive in return tenfold and have a lot of fun doing it!

My guess at a size of 5x7 inches was incorrect. A 5.5x8.5 inches will fit 40 lines of text with a 10pt, making room for 40 advertisers in a 2 column format,

Too many of you are too trusting to strangers whom you have never personally met face to face. And this thing has to be taken literally since we are dealing with time and money here.

Im not sure where you are coming from on this.

There is nothing to trust, either a person likes his ideas and wants to implement them or they dont. It doesnt cost anything to read and if you say it costs time then you are in control of that, simply ignore.

Are you saying this idea wont work?

I don't see why this wouldn't be doable, magnets are on every fridge in America, more or less. There are companies that sell nothing but magnets and have been for years and years. Sporting schedules, realtor magnets, calendar magnets etc. so why not a "Don Alm style Directory Magnet"?

You might not make an absolute killing and may not be able to sell the spots at such a rapid fire way that the OP claims his broke church friend supposedly is doing but increasing the time to sell to 2-3 times which would be about a week to sell out and or/selling your spots for half of what is suggested here, figuring the magnets are $1 or less each, you would still come out with around $2,000 or more for a weeks worth of effort.

Even if it took you 2 weeks to sell out, that would still be $4,000 in a month's time, plenty enough for someone that makes less or next to nothing,

Don's silence is confirming a couple of suspicions I'm having about this thread.

First, last week he listed his "50 ways to make money" thread and this week he followed up with an inspiring story. True one? Not sure.

Secondly as a student of "statement analysis" - some parts of Don's story are "sensitive" meaning they don't ring fully true. For example, when he talks about Matt showing up a 8:00 a.m., he uses present tense, "Matt is on my doorstep..." vs. "was in my doorstep."

When you tell a story, you natually use past tense. So, when an area of the story appears as present tense, it is suspicious. Same goes for the sentence "the guy gives me a big bearhug," vs. the guy gave me...

It is fascinating to look at posts with a critical eye using statement analysis - which can show deceptive areas.

Don may or may not be fully honest in his thread, but it seems (though initially inspiring) to be unbelievable. Which is myhumble opinion.

Come on Don, I love your contributions and have thanked you many times.

I believe you have done a whole lot in sales in your lifetime and have followed your posts almost from the beginning, way before I became a member.

But you know dog gone well that ALL your "stories" do not happen exactly like you say.
You have a way of embellishing things and telling things that you accomplished years ago as if they just happened yesterday or are happening now.

Matt may or may not be real, maybe its your new way of telling about the sales you made from a third party point of view, that way people reading can feel like HEY IM not the great DON ALM but If "newbie" MAtt can get sales then so can "little ole me"....or maybe he is the Clark Kent of sales and you just unleashed his Superman or better yet his FLASH as he sells 7 people in the course of 1 hour...

And now that you finally have a sig to click to, maybe you are ramping up the posts so you can create your own Legion of Supersalesmen.

Or maybe you are just a hell of a guy that wants to share your knowledge with the world, in which case who cares what I or any other "skepticock' or "negatits" think, no need to spout off insults because we are nobody.

I look forward to more of your war stories!

    Your humble apprentice,
    Eddie

I've been reading this forum for a while now but only just now registered to reply to this thread.

I don't know which I find funnier--that some here find the story of a rookie collecting $6k in receipts his first week so unbelievable that it must be a scam or that you think Don won't tell you the exact mechanics of his marketing project because he's trying to cover up some sinister plot. The road to hell is paved (or so I hear) with refrigerator magnets.

Picking up $6K (only a portion of which, I'll assume, the sales person got to keep) is not unusual in sales. I hardly think the salesman in question ordered his Maserati the following Friday. $6K in receivables isn't some vast amount. But, then again, who the hell am I besides a salesperson who has, in one week, collected $20k not in sales, but in COMMISSIONS? Of course, you have all probably guessed by now that I made that money as a mafia tough working a numbers racket for that shadiest of all possible businesses: AKA the insurance industry.

Look. I listened to Don's sale in 90 seconds and let me just clue you in on a couple of things. #1 What Don accomplishes in that recording isn't a standout sales performance. It's a lay-down deal that anyone with the balls to walk in the front door could have picked up. Perhaps Don IS a great salesman, but that's not the point of the recording.

So is Don a great salesman? Maybe, maybe not. Is Don a crook? Maybe, maybe not. But let me tell you, folks, Don is a GREAT marketer with the balls to do a salesman's job. He walks (oh no! the present tense! I must be lying) into a retail business (we're talking some guy who can afford retail frontage, not some crappy closet in an office park, but retail frontage). Don has researched his guy. He knows the prospect can afford a full page ad in the yellow pages which isn't cheap. He's trying to sell the guy advertising for $189. That guy can't take a crap for less than $500. Not only that, but Don has a gizmo in his hands: a shiny pizza box with the add on top. If that guy were to send out mailers to 1,000 people it would cost a $1,000. Don can give him 5,000 people for $189. Just basic co-op marketing stuff.

So is Don pocketing the money? Who knows. I find it likelier that he just learned, like every salesman worth his salt, that the money is there for the taking. A compelling offer and a will to do the f'n deal is all it takes.

If you can't figure out why Don wouldn't detail the exact mechanics of his marketing project to you guys, then you should probably start trying to figure out how to fill out the application at Walmart. Don isn't in the business of multiplying his competitors. You've got to make your bones by finding someone like Don and working for him till you figure it out for yourself. In the process of doing that you just might figure out that $6k isn't all that much and how this sales racket actually works, and then you can go apply at Charles Schwab and pretend to not hear them chuckle when you wag your finger at them and declaim in stentorian voice how, through some preposterous statement analysis, you've determined that they are running a numbers game.

Last, but not least, for the guy who referred sarcastically to calling prospects at 7:30 AM as "brilliant." Let me just point out that it is a fairly banal and rudimentary fact in sales that your best chances at catching the decision maker are before 8:00AM and after 5:00PM, when his salaried gatekeeper is in bed or at the dinner table. Of course, anyone with an hour of sales or phone training knows and understands this, which is precisely why you don't.

And as for the whole "newbie" aspect of the thing. Let me clue you in. You fly or die your first week. If you can't make it work the first week, then here are the "B" leads, and you can keep having them until you find another job. That a rookie is calling @ 7:30Am his first week isn't at all surprising. What would be surprising is if he's still doing it his 100th. You will never be more enthusiastic and motivated than your first week. Moreover, the best salesman is a HUNGRY salesman. This is all basic stuff and should be familiar to anyone who has succeeded in sales--not the 80% who eventually "choose" the "security" of a salaried position and talk each night at the bar about how they once worked in that sales racket.

All I know about Don from reading his posts and listening to his 90 second sale is that he can do the deal. As for the people who think he is some confidence trickster, I wonder whether you even know what the "deal" is.

As a cross sell, he can sell huge refrigerators big enough to hold that magnet.

Agreed. It's also a demo on almost talking past the sale. And then there was the part about not pre-judging, but then he goes ahead and prejudges anyway. Not the best sales behaviors.

To his credit what it really shows is that he came up with a product that's real, real, real simple to pitch.

I have a new respect for good 'ol Don Alm.
He always has these strategies he throws around

Then, the other day, I was listening to Gary Halbert's XXX recodings, and low and behold who do they bring up..... None other than Don Alm and his strategies. They weren't condesending towards him, just talked about his different approach to marketing. I think they brought up the one where he mailed the locked floppy...

Go ahead and bash... but when the big boys take notice, you might want to as well.
