Business Directory Question

When creating a directory, I'm wondering if I should create the listing categories by location or by type of business?

For example, restaurants look like they are usually listed by type of restaurant. American, Chinese, French, etc. However, I'm thinking about listing restaurants on my directory by location in my city.

The thing is I would also list the other types of businesses by location as well, which may not be as desirable. I'm not sure. Do people look for hair salons in one part of a city, or are they just looking for hair salons and finding the one that has good reviews, etc.

What do you all think? Good idea or bad idea to list by location rather than by type?

One more thing, my directory is called Shop [My Region]. Region is made up of 4 cities in close proximity to each other.

I'm wondering if I should use this directory for things like clothing stores, salons, etc. and then create a separate directory for restaurants?

Or is it better to put it all together on one site? Would it be harder to rank the directory for all the different terms?

It really depends on what your goal is with the directory.
For me, I'd keep everything in one place to make it user-friendly.

Regarding rankings, IMO (it really depends who you ask, different SEOs will answer differently), it would be the same to rank for the different terms using one or two separate directories - but you're saving yourself a lot of work by keeping it together.

I'd create the directory with location AND type of business - it's more seo-friendly and user-friendly. Can you create a filter with whatever CMS/coding you're using to pull the information according to user search parameters?
