WTH was that!! This stopped me in my tracks while Cold Calling Today!

I'm really confused by this one...

I was just getting into my "zone" cold calling today and the following happened when I called a Taxi company:

Business (human): Hello, Widget Company
Me: Hi, I need to speak with the owner pl--
Business (recording): WARNING, WARNING! You are calling a federally registered business and you are violating the Do Not Call Law. You have been reported!

uuuumm...What...the...heck!

Has this happened to anyone else before? What did you do about it to continue with business? Do you actually check the DNC list before cold calling? Could this be something the owner set up to scare disgruntled customers?

What's most confusing about it is the fact that I didn't start the call with "This is Me from Local Marketing Company". I didn't even finish the sentence with "please" when I was hit with this megaphone-like recording...sheeesh!!

Needless to say I stopped cold calling today because I'm chicken (or smart?). Things were going so well too. I had made 34 calls with 2 appointments set.

...So I'm pretty bummed about it.

What should I do tomorrow?

    1. Can I register my business phone number or a fax number? The National Do Not Call Registry is only for personal phone numbers. Business-to-business calls and faxes are not covered by the National Do Not Call Registry."

      From the lovely FTC.

      You're fine...

It's fake there is no business DNC list. IF by chance you called a cell number, that could be registered, but not on a "federally registered business" list. Most likely they have a VM line they put you to once they realized you were selling. Just don't call them back as it's clear they don't want to talk to you. There are plenty of other businesses that do.

Get on the horse tomorrow and try again. You'll learn that those rude or "scary" people are one in a hundred and most people are normal. You will also develop a thicker skin and it won't even phase you after a few days of doing it...trust me, it's been years and I don't even pay attention to idiots like that anymore.

Wow...amazing to which extreme some people are willing to take it just to spook a cold caller.

Yes, the posters above are correct, the is not b2b DNC list and there never can be one. Imagine: A business advertising their phone number and asking people not to ever call it? That wouldn't make sense, would it?

I've only ran into this problem a few times. Like the other posters have mentioned, there's no such thing as a DNC for businesses. Taxi companies are pretty busy in most areas, so it's a good bet they just headed you off at the pass, so to speak, to save themselves the time of talking with another unsolicited marketing call.

most likely you hit a cell phone number. many businesses today use magic jack
and cell phones. So if you hit a small business that uses a cell, just move on and dont worry about it.

I one time marketed to a small biz owner with a cell phone and he was angry. and i explained the b2b law and when you advertise a biz with a CELL PHONE you exempt yourself from protection.

He was cool and said ok. I just never called him again.

Cold callibg stinks but when i was in the mortgage business it made me a fortune
    doing refi's.

    Good Luck

  • Just a scare tactic - and apparently, a pretty effective one - why they feel they need it is another question...

Sometimes, the ones with biggest defenses have them because the can't say no to a good salesman - if you breach the wall, and push the right buttons, you will have your time.

It is really amusing how people get to this extent to avoid telemarketers. Don't worry about it, he is just making it up.

After giving it some thought, I was thinking he has probably upset a customer recently and thought that customer was me. A disgruntled customer would call and ask for the owner....in retrospect, it's kind of funny

On a very positive note it DOES let you know that they sussed it
was a cold call ...VERY QUICKLY...and gave you a great indication
of their inner mind set at that point.

That should indicate that maybe a different approach might be needed.

There are much better opening lines that "Hi, I need to speak to the owner...."
(I'm assuming that was your opening line) that would get a much warmer response from them.
