How To Sell Anything To A Restaurant Owner

Ok guys I am going to use website sales as an example but this works well for rep management, social media, SEO, or whatever.

This one requires a little upfront expense (sometimes) but the conversion rate is so high its ridiculous.

The first thing to do is to open up your YellowPages (dead tree version) and go to the Restaurant section.

Now what we are looking for here are businesses that have paid for an ad in the YellowPages but do not have a website (or a facebook page/google local etc ).

Next thing I want you to do is pick up the phone and call them. Once you get them on the phone resist all urges to pitch them anything. Instead, make yourself a dinner reservation for around 8pm. This is usually a good time as any earlier they are busy and any later they are packing up.

Gather your sales materials and take them with you to dinner. Sit down and order yourself a meal and enjoy it. At the end when the waiter comes to hand you the cheque ask if the owner is available (they always are).

The owner will come over. Introduce yourself and compliment the food and service, say how you loved the atmosphere. Then explain to them its a shame they are missing out on so many potential customers (begin pitch) make sure to emphases the benefits of what your proposing over the YellowPages ("Did you know that less than 10% of people use the YellowPages as their first point of reference when searching for businesses?" "If you don't mind me asking how much did your YellowPages ad cost? Wow that sure seems expensive when you know that your missing out on 90% of people that are looking for you" etc) . If they do not have time to chat, make an appointment and leave them some facts to mull over.

If you have some solid material to present them and your a reasonabley convincing salesperson you will close a sale easily on the night (and most of the time your dinner will be on the house too)

HOT TIP: Take an iPad to show them what their competitors are doing.

    Forgot to add this part:

My sales kit I take along includes the following:

    * iPad (for demos of competitions site, google ranking, keywords etc
    * A flyer outlining what your talking about PLUS your other services
    * A copy of their ad
    * A contract so you can do the deal then and their
    * A receipt book (in case they pay cash or cheque)
    * A Paypal express link on my site www.domain.com/billing/whatever.html for the amount I am going to charge them (in case they want to pay via card)
    * Business cards
    * A pen to give them with my website written on it.
    * Enough cash to pay for dinner in case I do not get it free :-)

It could definitely work but it is pretty time consuming and could be costly if you make multiple trips without closing any sales.

This is a brilliant idea. I did this back in the day and conversions are actually pretty good.

I'd go about 3 times before I actually pitched them though.

While its certainly not something I would use for EVERY client approach I am closing sales at about 75% with this ATM. That is a good enough ROI to keep me doing it once every week or so.

Cooking similar food is okay otherwise bakers all over the world would be haggling in the courts.
Logically we could infer that you are legal since a recipe was apparently not published nor the copyright stolen; Im sure the OP is thrilled to hear this news; and therefore, depending on what state you are from, we could infer that you are 18 years of age (legal) that is if You are From the USA; otherwise we would have to rely on your word as to you being legal, unless we can determine what country you are from and the age of consent related to that country; further it is logical to conclude that you enjoy cooking similar food to what the OP indicated in his original post he would enjoy at the hypothetical restaurant he gave as an example.

PS - i like the OPs approach - I like to 1st contact businesses within my current range of experience of which I am a customer and have some pre built rapport with the owners; I can chat with them on the phone and they usually remember me because I am the guy that orders the weird "Grandpa" pizza pie and calls to speak to the owner about how great the pie was and throw in some memorable remarks for when my follow up call comes in.

Great stuff and keep it up!

Don't you think that would cost you much? Especially if you don't close a deal?

A $50-$70 meal with your partner is not too bad if you close at 50% plus for $400-$900 deals.

Like I said before I am closing at about 75% with this at the moment. It's turning out to be a great way to pay for date might :-)

Also like I said no way would I ever use this as my primary method to approach business owners, but if you out out once a week or so like I do it is working out well.

Having said that if you are selling at the bottom of the pricing barrel (I.e $99 sites etc) I would not even think about doing this. But remember its not about price, it's about the value you can offer.
