Hello,

I own a newly opened brick and mortar business. The one thing I understand is that I need to advertise and bring in new customers in order to succeed. I am very passionate and knowledgeable about my products and services and have no problem convincing prospective customers that they need my services.

Where my problem comes in is generating leads. Cold calling is not my style. I don't mind calling, but I do not like cold calling.

I have bought and tried several WSO's, but have been caught up in a web of "too much information". What are your tips or advice on a good starting point?

Thanks!

Terry

What's your business? Too many people throw all their money at the next big thing, and then they end up with no customers coming in, and no idea where their budget went. You need some FOCUSED marketing, and you don't need gimmicks to get it. Don't buy anything until you have a plan.

    Hi,

Sorry, I should have put that information in there. Basically we offer two main services:

    1) First Aid and Safety Supplies (retail)
    2) First Aid and Safety Training

Our main target is business to business, but we do get a small share of the general public as well.

My advice is to use educational selling. Read Chet Holmes' Ultimate Sales Machine for some real world advice on how he trained people to use it and used it himself. I believe a lot of his selling idea's would work well for your business.

I believe in the end you will need to have someone set up appointments via cold calling but educational selling if done right should make closing easier for you. Can you hire appointment setters?

Thanks Aaron, I will look into reading what you recommended. I am looking into using appointment setters, but I will need to keep the cost low. I tried Fiver, but with no luck.

I just wrote a post about this. Nobody starts out liking calling. "It's not my style" is avoidance.

And yes, to help you most effectively, we do need to know what your business is.

In short, the best way to get customers is to consistently get your offer in front of many qualified prospects.

Thanks Jason! I just watched the video and just those few minutes helped me realize that I was doing it wrong. Cold-calling is still not up there on my list, but at least I have a new method to try.

The booking market for your business is awesome! We've worked with clients in your EXACT business, and had great success and long relationships. Your best bet is the marketing you are doing to current clients/renewals, and adding cold calling with targeted lists for businesses that require your services (and I know what they are).

Cold calling will be the fastest way to get business. Would you be more comfortable in person? Maybe try cold walking if your product value is high enough to justify the time.

OK. In the business I work at for my "day job", we offer products called patient lifts. One of my responsibilities is to head up the patient lifts program. There are a lot of accessories for these, which help the nurses/caregivers/family members move the patient more safely.

Instead of trying to sell products, what we do is sell a Safe Patient Handling program.

Fact is that hospitals, nursing homes, long term care facilities etc. pay out tons of money every year in settlements because they get sued. For what? Nurse Apple dropping Grandma on the floor when trying to move her from the bed to the commode. Happens all the time. Scary, huh? For a typical hospital, this totals $1 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR in insurance payouts.

And the hospitals typically accept this as a cost of doing business.

So by changing the culture, and implementing an SPH program, we save the hospital over 80% of that money by reducing the occurrence of injuries by 80%. That's $800,000 and man does that buy a lot of lift equipment.

    Starting to get the picture?

    Don't sell first aid equipment.

    Sell First Aid Safety programs.

There are plenty of businesses out there who don't have an Occupational Health & Safety Program, even though it's required by law (check your state's requirements for what size...typically 20+ employees). Help them out. Show them what they need to be compliant. Become an expert. Raise your rates. Coming into focus?

He already sells the training, it's what he does...CPR/First Aid. I think he's on the right track, is established, just needs to reach those that need the certifications.
