Marketing myself - I'd love any ideas!

Hi

I'm feeling very shy and quite vulnerable, so please be gentle!

I've been working as a freelance writer for a few years now, and it developed into writing blogs, producing newsletters and managing social media for a few big clients. I got them through referrals, and I've never really had to market myself before.

I've moved house now, and the referrals are drying up. I've got a three month period which is a break from my main client, and it's occurred to me how bad it is to be relying on one place! So I'm looking at expanding, and I'd like to do it quickly.

I'm a bit torn on how to market myself, and how to find prospects. There seems to be a huge number of helpful, knowledgeable people here so I thought I'd reach out and ask for your opinions - I'd be really grateful for any advice!

First thing that comes to my mind is fiverr.com. It is not much because you are making only $5 for each sale, but it ads up. People need writers there to write articles, blogs, commenting, and more. Look into it, at least it is a side income.
It sounds like you also blog, keep blogging and get an audience that may be interested in hiring you.

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it!

I did look into Fiverr, but it's so cheap. My current three favourite clients pay four figures, so it'd feel like some drop - and I'm worried that I'd be alienating future clients by offering my services so cheaply. I'm too much of a perfectionist to reduce the service to match the cost!

It is a side income though, and something I should probably look into more. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Hey Elle, why not market to businesses within the same niche as your previous clients. You now have a lot of valid proof and a respectable track record so showing them previous work should be a highly effective marketing strategy.

It doesn't need to even be in the same town or state, you could simply do a little research on their website and current state of their social media activities and then either cold call or send a polite email showcasing your services.

Check out the website elance.com. It is the ultimate hub for freelancers looking for clients online. The website bills your clients, and takes a small percentage (8.75 %). Definitely worth a try!
