1 cold call = 1 meeting scheduled [Update 07/11/12 -Client Closed]

I've always known this business to be here but never got round to approaching them.

Today I looked at the website (he sells motorcycles) and surprisingly I found his personal gmail and mobile phone number listed on the page. This guy must get hundreds of marketing calls. So I took my chance and emailed him to "warm" him up before I followed up with a phone call.

I basically said "Just wanted to know if you've got my email and to just talk about what you're doing to promote your business"

I didn't use any technical seo, ppc terms etc, just normal business owner talk.

"I've spotted opportunities on your website we can improve to push your site forward". That was when the client mentioned the term SEO, PPC. The green light to talk abit more technical.

He was upfront about his marketing spend, how maxed out he is doing SEO and PPC so don't expect a huge marketing budget, (we didn't talk figures). He's got 4 locations so this sounds hopeful.

To cut a long story short, I'm meeting him at my uncles restaurant over lunch to discuss more about his marketing.

Moral of the story: The more/hard you try, the luckier you get

Will keep you updated, meeting is on 7th November

It's proof that you don't need to "wow them with words" - just talk to them like they are people...because they ARE.

    Great job!

Sometimes in order to stand out from the rest of marketers we just gotta be more 'human' and 'toned down'. Ironic.

good luck! dollarize the value of what you do for him. do 2 checks:

    1) mobile site
    2) reputation on directories

if hes not doing well on either, or both, then you can pump some serious money because these services are valuable. use google keyword tool to find the amount of motorcycle related mobile searches there are in your area. help him with conversions, he can create a motorcycle night at his place and use sms marketing to create a club of local enthusiasts that frequent his shop

Michael, with it being so far away, don't OVER check, but do make sure you've sent him an email with your info, and also call to confirm/remind the day before.

Just some advice from an appt setter.

Tomorrow, you don't have to sell what you offer - just focus on learning where he might need help. Dig deep and find out what makes him worried, where he sees area of improvement, what's the value of each customer for him, what he does currently to get clients etc. Give him some ideas - but tell that you'll think about his case, figure out what all can be done and then suggest how can you help. Work as consultant - not like a sales man. So don't worry about reports as of now. Prepare what all questions you should ask.

You're right, I don't want him to see me as a commodity so I'm going to do the report and just "push it aside" for later and do some real digging. Original meeting was to talk about SEO but I'm going to move away from that.

I kinda bribed him with a bowl of noodles but now I've heard he's bringing a friend :O I better close this one...

    Update 07/11/2012

I closed the client today for $479 per month SEO on a 3 month trial. Wasn't much resistance from the client except his right hand man who was also there wanted to make sure budget realignment didn't affect current operations. I wanted to go through the business questionnaire to re position myself but due to location, the time spent going through the SEO report, I didn't feel there was going to be enough time to do it.

One of the main reasons why he's taking me on is the face to face contact. He gets many cold calls from people trying to sell him so he blows them away. Forgot to mention that I did have to bribe him over lunch which I paid for.

So I guess I will have to deliver on the current budget to "buy the opportunity" to get a sit down and really dig into their business.

    Happy with the result.

£24.50 lunch = £300 SEO and I'm sure it will lead onto bigger things

    Keep trying, you'll get luckier!

Good for you Michael. Keep trying. Keep doing what you are doing now. Be personal and do not be too pushy. That is one way of keeping them on the phone.

What i sent by email so that when you call up, you call it a "follow up call" regarding the email and his/her thoughts are.

      Good morning [name]

Please hear me out, this is a personal email to you.

My name is Michael Nguyen and I have my own
      online marketing business.

What are you doing to promote your business? Is there
      anything you need assistance with?

The reason I'm contacting you is because I've seen your
website and I've spotted opportunities you might
want to take advantage of to get more visits to your
      business.

We could pop into my uncles restaurant
to discuss your business over a bowl of delicious noodles!

I'll give you a call this afternoon to learn more about your
      business.

      Best regards
      Michael

Called in the afternoon. Doesn't matter what time, all business owners are busy so if you can catch them then good luck and sell the appointment.
