1st COTD | 1:28 secs | Here's My Laaaazzzzzy Script For Selling Web Design.

Okay, so i don't like typing too long so i'll keep this short.

My first Call Of The Day.

Prospect type: Photographer

Website in place: I dont know

Lead generated from: Yellow Pages

Ond so the script goes:

Me: Hi ________. I found you number in the yellow pages. Im calling to find out of I can re-design your website.

Prospect: I don't have a website (+ giggles).

Me: Okay, can I interest you in one?

Prospect: What CMS are you using?

Me: Wordpress.

Prospect:Okay, send me something, here's my e-mail address.

Boom.

BTW: I was talking in a subdued-i-dont-feel-like-talking-voice.
BTWW: It was 1:28 min (not secs)

Now i'll call someone and tell them "I can do a better job with your website".

Trial and Error Brings The Cheddar.

That's great. I like the lazy part, because it doesn't put any pressure on you as the caller. Something I wish I had known when I was getting started.

do you have close rate / sales for this approach ? the script seems to loose and wishful thinking to apply and work but may be wrong ?

Okay... she knew what "CMS" meant but she doesn't have a website?

Why waste your time on someone who's trying to get you off the phone?

You don't know her wants, past experiences, goals, budget...

People do that sh*t all the time in insurance -- quote me on a term/whole/UL policy.

As if the price is all that matters.

Build a case first before you make yourself a commoditizing, quote-machine.

    In love,

Hmm. No qualification in your process.

    "Send me a quote."

99% of what you'll do will be 'busy work'. Busy work doesn't make you money. After you're sick and tired of churning out quotes with no replies, come on back.

Substitute the word "lazy" for "weak ass" or "pathetic" and this would be more accurate headline.

Hopefully anyone reading this post does not think this pitch is ideal or suggested.

My post is more to warn newbies from doing this rather than criticism of the op, because he will learn by experience how flawed the method is. It just hurts my heart to see people struggling that think this is a good idea.

By using a script like this you are not generating leads, you are generating wood...

The "send me more info" is a BS line that politely says leave me alone...

I'm assuming since you are in the yellowpages these cold leads are local, correct?

In that case, judging by your "lazy/half ass" script I would highly suggest setting appts. This script will not close anyone over the phone.

And yeah, you need to follow a real script. If you really are that lazy... follow this script instead.

"Hey bob...Ryan Lester here. I'm a new web designer here in (location). I just recently opened for busineess.

Real quick Bob, I'm just calling around trying to let folks know about our service and drum up some interest. I'm wondering if you have a website for your company, or had maybe given any thought to doing other web based projects in the future?"

I think JD posted this script somewhere. Use it to set appointments...Close them in person.

It will work a hell of a lot better then your "lazy script"

Because LAZY will not get you business. LAZY will not make you money. LAZY will not support your family. LAZY will not churn results. LAZY people fail. LAZY will keep you working a 9-5 job until you retire...if you retire. LAZY is not what businesses are looking for. A LAZY consultant is a BAD consultant. "What CMS are you using...?" being considered even CLOSE to an average first response....told me right away that this post was BS.

Thats a rare, highly exceptional initial response.

If you have actually sold alot of websites on the phone, that would be your first dead give away to tell you that this person does not cold call much, if any.

Forget "send me a quote".... The problem is on an even more fundamental level...This OP isnt legit at all.

Originally Posted by Rearden View Post

                Exactly.

                "Possible" is not "Probable".

Its also completely possible for me to win 60 million dollars from publishers clearing house.

This OP is not legit from the "get go".

Even if there was a one in a thousand chance that this happened on the phone, its not likely to happen twice in a hundred calls. You cant base a repeatable success system off of it by a looooooooong shot.

You wanna learn how to be lazy and sell...ask me!

As for the OP...."It's fabricated". I stand by that.

Thats the problem- It "DOESNT" work for him. I have seen enough posting and offline telemarketing to know BOTH... it should be pretty obvious that this is a fabrication.

The problem with that is that people DO take stuff seriously here... and stuff like this starts trends, and the next thing you know 100 people have wasted a month trying it and beating themselves over the head about why they cant get it to work for them like the OP did.

Here's why: Its made up. It never happened.

I would be making a disclaimer if there was ANY chance I was wrong... But Im not.

Take it or leave it. Like me or dont like me.

Mr, Durham, i respect your stature on this forum but how can you even say this.

While I don't have the certainty (or experience) of John, I'm 99% sure that he's right. The conversation you posted doesn't sound like a real conversation. Maybe you didn't report it precisely as it happened. Maybe you did.

But, let's assume you are telling it accurately, and it's true.
You left with nothing. "Send me something"? is nothing. It's isn't even an objection. It's the cold calling equivalent of "I'll see you later".

I once threw a fishing line in the water with no bait, just hook, and a fish bit and was caught. It would never happen again, and it isn't something I would recommend. Your post is kind of like that.

I know it sounds like everyone is beating up on you. My advice is to re-read your own post a few times to try to figure out why.

                    I wish you well.

I think it is patently obvious he is telling the truth.

                      His script is as follows:

Me: Hi ________. I found your number in the Yellow Pages. I'm calling to find out of I can re-design your website.

If they don't have one he says:

Me: Okay, can I interest you in one?

If they do have one he says:

"I can do a better job with your website".

That is all his script is.

Is it great? No. Is it a starting point for him? Yes.

You will see he has thanked those who suggested why this is not such a good script and why the outcome he got was a fob off.

                      As he says in his last line;

Trial and Error Brings The Cheddar.

I bet by Friday he would have made some adjustments.

                      So good starting point Ryan.

You could have shaved off a couple of weeks learning cycle by just starting with either Johns or Jasons script openers though.

                      Dan

PS: It is not impossible that he happened to phone one lady who had no website but maybe has been doing a bit of research into getting one and picked up a technical term; but that wasn't the gist of his OP.

Not to knock the OP, but Durham has a point and any newbie reading Ryan's posts/thread should be leery and NOT think this happens on a regular basis.

Sure, it does happen. But he had another thread here where he practically has a near 100% "conversion" (appointment) rate.

He should not be condemned to hell, but one does not simply begin cold calls and have a near 100% response rate.

                        Something is off.

hey ryan well done for making the call that's a good start.

you can never 100% be certain when someone says "send me some details" whether its a load of bs to get you off the phone.

the best response is to say "I can do better than that.....I will send you a live demo of your site."

So what you only respond to people who wrote negative stuff rather than people who try to move the thread on?

Ok.... Yeah your script sucks balls, even if it has made you 3 new deals today, now what price are you selling at?

In case you didn't get that I asked the same question again, because if you used this script and closed 3 $1000 development projects today, everything everybody else has said in this thread is completely irrelevant.

Listen here man, can you please stop your negativity on this thread.

I understand criticism, but contact breaking down is not cool my friend.
Haha what? Mine was probably the only positive post in this thread.

There was no criticism at all.... I asked you how much you made from this script to show to the people who were saying that it wouldn't work that their opinion doesn't mean anything if it made you money.

$300-400 x 3 is better than most people here make in a day.

If it's working for you, keep at it.

I don't get what the big deal is here....people take sh%$ way too seriously. If it works for him, then who cares? He's not saying that everyone should do it...at least he is making an effort...granted a half a$$ed one. Which in reality is probably more than 90% of the people on here.

There are 2 types of people in this world....those who get it and those who don't. The ones that get it know exactly what we are talking about. The ones who don't are left scratching their heads.

Here's how this conversation would have went if I answered the phone:

HIM: Hi ________. I found you number in the yellow pages. Im calling to find out of I can re-design your website.

        ME: I don't have a website (+ giggles).

HIM: Okay, can I interest you in one?

ME: Nope. The court says I can't have the Interweb on the account of my parole and being registered and all.

        HIM: click

However, if I was making the call and he asked about the CMS even though he didn't have a website, I wouldn't have let him off the hook so easily. He clearly had some knowledge or experience. I would have pressed that by asking which CMS he prefers or has experience with.

I would have tried to build a conversation by expressing a genuine interest in his knowledge and apparent failure at building a website.
