Pay Pal

Hey guys,

Somebody brought to my attention they've found many business owners don't like PayPal.

Have you found this to be true? I've only had one out-of-town client pay through PayPal, the rest were by cheque, by preference, not for the fact they didn't actually like Pay Pal.

If your client didn't like PayPal, what alternative did you use?

Thanks,

James

  • I currently use Square for most transactions. I have the little card reader attached to my phone and it works out great.

That being said, PayPal seems to definitely protect the consumer, so it confuses me when business owners don't like to pay through it.
  • Checks, checks checks and more checks. Best form of payment besides cold hard cash.

  • Paypal can be very touchy when it comes to businesses that sell digital products...they tend to side with buyers, even when they buyer is in the wrong, and can and have arbitrarily locked down accounts with several thousand dollars in them for months, even indefinitely with no reason ever given.

I'd say find something else, but most buyers prefer to use paypal, unless their country doesn't support paypal.
  • Businesses dont like PayPal because of the fees they have.

    • In the case of the OP this doesn't apply. The client (business owner) isn't the one paying the fees.
  • We were discussing who paypal sides with, not if it works or if it's right of them...or how it plays out with a CC company.

    • K... but you do realize, I was talking about the same thing, right? And you do realize that paypal is not a financial authority in disputes... it doesn't matter who paypal sides with, is what I'm saying.
  • The CC company decides and Paypal pass on the decision, then it looks as if Paypal made that decision, but it is the CC company
  • Thanks for providing all important information related to paypal.

  • i have to say on personal experience i have had no problems with paypal
  • Hi James,

You said "someone" brought it to your attention that biz owners don't like paypal.

The question is, do YOUR customers not like paypal? :-)

FWIW, I take checks/cash from nearly 100% of my clients. An occasional credit card (usually through paypal) but almost always a check. Just the way my clients prefer it. (and I'm ok with it since I don't have to pay the credit card fees)

Besides, it's kinda fun to go to the bank with a wad of checks in your hand - sorta reminds you of each success.

  • For small local businesses, Paypal is a great option. There is a threshold when you need to graduate to a larger merchant platform, but for smaller, less mature companies it is great. It's free and easy to set up, minimal maintenance, good reporting and if you have a field environment they have their version of "Square" which is "Paypal Here". People know Paypal. There are quirks but if you've ever had a merchant account you know the pain of taking cards is offset with the revenue rise. I actually steer my small, offline clients to Paypal.

    • whats the best way to take checks from out of town clients other than PO?

  • I could see how small local shops don't like paypal. I mean if you're not in the internet world then you might not even know what Paypal is. A majority of our clients are 50+ because they are the ones that need help with digital marketing. Therefore, PayPal really isn't even an option. We almost ALWAYS get payments by check.

Some clients (very few) want to be set up on automatic recurring payments which we use Intuit payment processing. It's been working great for us.

Just keep in mind there are quite a few other options beside Paypal.
  • Paypal takes out a small amount every transaction and the transfer to bank wait it forever. However, I don't mind using paypal for payments that I'm trying to receive faster then others or to make it easier for customers in another state to pay me online.

    • When I take a check over the phone, it is printed, deposited, and available at midnight.
