I think the best way to send surveys through the mail is email. It does not really cost you anything and sending and receiving is instantaneous.

The only problem is getting the email adds of recipients to send your surveys to.

I agree. Email is good because it gets your reply to your prospect real quick.

Also, doesn't really cost a thing.

Speed and free is not good if the desired result isn't achieved though?

Thinking mail will get opened more and
        acted on.

Still looking for eactual results from someone who has done it.

        Best,

Can't say I've done it myself yet, planing to in the future, but last time I bought a car from a very large dealership in Canada they sent me a service survey in the mail.

The survey had a phone number to call to give feedback directly and an a link to do the survey online. If I recall properly they offered something to complete the survey but I can't remember what.

Just a quick comment about results...

Once, I received a survey in the mail. I don't remember what it was about, but it had two crisp $1 bills in it. I took the $2 out, put them in my pocket, read the first paragraph that said something like,

"We're sending you this money in hopes that you'll fill out and ret......" whatever, I threw it away.

From that experience, I'd say sending them snail mail could be an expensive flop. You're average guy (I'm fairly average) isn't going to take the time to perform the manual task.

          Well, that's just my $2 anyway....heheh

Honestly, how many surveys do you fill yourself? That should be a good indicator of the kind of results to expect and what NOT to do.

We used to mail our survey's out with a stamp addressed envelope. We didn't like the response rate so we now hand them the survey in their new camper welcome kit. We still include the sell addressed envelope for them to return it. The results are better with that more personal touch of giving it to them.

As for return method I would suggest all three (self addressed envelope, fax, and a web form). That way you will get more responses.

Not sure rather you want to share more about the survey but if you did we could offer examples of how we handled (or companies we worked for or with handled) similar surveys.

      Thanks Aaron,

I'm looking to send it out to non buyer prospects
to see if a service is viable.

      Got the idea from Cashvertising.

      Best,

  • I'm sure you've worked this out. But whatever method you use...

You need to give a really good "incentive" to get your people to fill out and send back the survey.

The only surveys we've sent out we've sent to past customers. It was very detailed and was about two pages long. We offered a $25 gift card to anyone who returned it. We got quite a few back and got some great feedback, including phrases/ideas to use in marketing materials. Then, like idiots we just stopped doing it. I found an old one the other day and made the mental note we need to expand it and start sending it again. We were surprised how many people actually returned the survey when we were doing it initially.

As for the incentive, many - I don't have an exact number/percentage but I'd guess at least 50% of the people wrote a note saying something like "Don't send me anything".

We did include a paid return envelope. We might try using Farcebook for this in the future, but the main point I'd make is - do this. You'd be surprised what your clients will tell you and want to tell you.
