Help With Hiring A Telemarketer

Hello

I am in need of a Telemarketer for my business and I am researching "what to pay them" for their services. Basically, I need someone for about 1 hour per day (7 days per week). To make about 5 phone calls max.

What should I pay them?

I was thinking, Federal Minimum Wage ($7.67) in my area + bonuses of $1-$6 (depending on package they sell).

By the way, they will be able to work from home. They will be communicating back and forth with me via phone and emil. (phone if there is a sale and email if there is no sale)

Is this fair?

You might want to check out outsourcing it to a company rather than hiring one yourself. Its likely that they will get better training and supervision that way. I know if you look on places like elance you can find companies offering ex-no of seats in their call centre and it wasnt hugely expensive...around the realms of $15.00 an hr with you providing the leads.

    Anyway, just a thought.

    Cheers!

Definitely be prepared to "pan for gold" if you do the hiring yourself. I have tried hiring myself, and its easier said than done. Employees lose interest, get nervous, etc. Using an established call center is a good idea.

Thats part of success. "Finding" good salespeople. Its the reason why not everyone has a successful organization, because they arent prepared to "pan for gold".

You either need to have the money to get you through some panning... or you need to create an automated hiring process...and put tons of people on who you may never even have personal contact with... and pan that way. Like affiliate marketing.

You may get a good one in your first one or two hires...but you cant go in counting on that.

At one hour per day... you wont give your telemarketer any momentum. They need to be on at least two to get through the numbers they need, in order to hit a daily average.

Secondly, the pay scale will get you an appointment setter, but not a phone closer, especially only working long enough each day to barely get warmed up.

You need to work a telemarketer 20 hours per week, or ten at very least for numerous reasons, having to do with momentum and averages.

I'm going to go a little more out on a limb and say that if you are only hiring for 5 hours...do it yourself. That's not even enough to train someone on, or contract out.

Is this person going to call a list for you? Make sales on calls you don't want to?

I'm having a rough time coming up with anything you can't do on your own for 1 hour a day...help me out here.

My biggest package, 500 flyers will take me a good 6 hours for distributing so really, I only need to do 1 sale a day.

I know I am not offering many hours, I need someone to make the calls for me because I am hard of hearing and can't really "Make The Call".

Then I suggest you do it the way I am going to do it in 2013...

Interestingly enough though, before I go there. A lady came up and handed me a deaf card the other day saying she needed help and couldn't hear or speak. So I dug through my car and found a few dollars for her...

Im convinced that kind of advertising, for handicapped people, could be taken much further, if a person were to really apply some creative energy to it.

Some people will deal with you BECAUSE you have a handicap, and feel like doing business with you is planting a good seed. You wouldnt believe how huge the market of people are who are driven by things like compassion and/or seeing another entrepreneurial spirit and being inspired.

I once told people "Hey Im new in town, I dont have a job yet, but I can design websites, I was wondering if you had any projects you could drum up for me to help you with..."

And someone later told me that they bought from me just because I had the nerve to call around and create work instead of crying that there were no jobs...

Let me tell you a story that took about 12 weeks out of my life once, while its on my mind...

When I was around 21, I had quit working for my father in law... and in an effort to prove a point... I cold called the phone book for anyone who used sales people to see if they needed an appointment setter... I did not look in the paper for appointment setting jobs...they were few and far between....I rather made a list of people who used face to face salesman and approached them about letting me set appointments...

Came across this funeral home I had on my list...who had burial insurance salesman (big money), and I asked the owner if he hired appointment setters, and he told me no he didnt employ any, and asked me why I thought he would.

I said "because you have face to face salesman , and so I figured you might keep them booked with presentations instead of canvassing all day... I'll tell you what, if you'd like to try an appointment setter I will do this for you for $XX per hour just to try it...".

He thought I was smart to have figured out how to contact companies with salesman, instead of looking in the paper for a phone job.

So he let me try it for a week... then a week later he gave me a big raise to start a small room for him with 4-5 people...which I did...and I booked his salepeople solid and became the golden guy and got some killer bonuses...and moved on shortly after because, honestly, it really was kind of a morbid gig... (To top it off, the office was out in the middle of a cemetery and the shift was at night...and I was always the last one to leave an hour after everyone else...Freaky... lol)

      Anyway,

He felt great about having appointment setters though, and to my knowledge he may still be using appointments setters to this day.

My point is that some people buy just because your entrepreneurial spirit inspires them...and other buy for things like compassion, so, if you are TOTALLY deaf, there may be more ways to market yourself.

      Long tangent there sorry...

Now back to my original thought...

Maybe you should do what I plan to do and just create an automated hiring and training process online, give the opportunity to hundreds of people anonymously, and some will stick and make sales for you.

Thank You for your wonderful story! I really appreciate it! I have put up a few ads on craigslist already. In fact, I did this earlier today. I am hoping to have at least 2-4 people respond to my ad. I did have someone doing cold calls for me from Fiverr.com and she was absolutely wonderful, but because other people wanted her to do excessive work for only $5/$4 after fiverr took their $1 cut, she stopped offering her services. I had 1 sale out of 5 each day. Basically making me $700 per week extra. I would give my neighbors child $10-$20 per job during the summers, this would cut my work load in half. His mother loved that her son was learning responsibility and how to manage money. In fact, at the end of the summer be took his mother out for a nice diner and gave the rest of his earnings to her for school supplies and school clothes. Very sweet kid, only 13 years old.

This is interesting, thanks for sharing.

May I know which one is responsible for your 1 out of 5 sale? Is it the fiverr lady or the neighbors child?

The Fiverr lady was responsible for my 1 out of 5 sales.
The child was a great helper in distributing flyers.

Also, my company is small. I am the sole owner and operator. I do all the work myself, and do pretty good with texting/emailing. I need someone to cover the phone lines for me. This is why I only need someone for an hour a day. If I get a sale then I design flyers, print them out then go door to door distributing them.

My call list is no more than 5 per day, honestly. It's not much, but its something. This is my part-time at home job. I also work in a regular 8-6 job 3x per week. I do what I do to earn some extra money. I don't intend to become rich, just live comfortably.

A single telemarketer can handle your campaign but have you considered hiring others, or even outsourcing?

Sure, 1 out of 5 calls nets you a sale, but do you really just want to leave it there?

I really just need to hire 1 person to do this. If my line of work had more clients, then I would hire more people, but honestly I usually only get about 5 possible clients per day.

They county I live in usually gives people my number.

There are many telemarketers out there that you can hire but be sure to look for the best one that can deliver what you required. Of course, if you want highly skilled and professional telemarketers you can contact or inquire with some telemarketing companies out there. Maybe some of them can have suggestions or have the package of what exactly you need.

I recently hired a telemarketer and i don't pay by the hour, i pay by results. For every appointments he make, I pay him $5. For every sales I close, I pay him between $100 (for value below $1k) to 20%.

Results oriented pay scale allows you to track the effectiveness of your telemarketer and also to make sure that he does make the calls.

If you have an office, it would be to get your telemarketer to come in and call while you sit beside him and guide him along.

This may work better for my other product that I am trying to get off the ground. Pay by result may really work out than paying by the hour. Especially with Black Friday right around the corner. Thank You

Or, you could take that $10 an hour, add it to your initial offer, and pay someone $15-$20 an hour to make the calls for you.

At that rate I'm sure you would have quite a bit more interest.
